The Soul of A Car

Does a car have a soul? How can a piece of metal and plastic have anything as ephemeral and mystical as a ‘soul’? What do I mean by this? Let me address some of these definitions before I start my story.

What I am talking about here is the thought-form that is created by a human when they have spent time with an object. The thoughts, the fears, the highs and the lows – the emotional content and its resultant energy – can become imbued into an object, I believe. I believe we leave energetic traces of ourselves all over the place. We leave energy in the objects we interact with (through touch or through proximity or even through applying our attention to something). This energy imprint is renewed and re-energised every time we release emotion inside the car. In this way we build an energetic imprint.

If we choose to give that energetic imprint “form”, say for example by giving the car a name, or even just by considering that the car has a “soul” then we often talk about a car’s “personality”. This is what I am talking about when I mention a car’s soul – its collection of residual human energy frequencies, and these frequencies can coalesced into a single subtle energy form through an act of will.

Right, so now you know what I am talking about hopefully when I tell you the tale of how my old car said goodbye to me recently. Here’s the story.

Full Spiral With A Car

I have been from one end of the country to the other with my last car. It was a Subaru Legacy estate which was great for all the off-road driving that I did down bumpy dirt tracks in all weathers. When the car began to politely inform me that it was approaching the end of its useful life and wanted to be retired from such arduous work (via warning lights on the dashboard, not by any psychic means) then I knew it was time for us to part.

Subaru Legacy – a reliable 4-wheel drive car

As I drove out to Sherwood Forest the GPS took me down the roads through Buxton and Chesterfield to get to the destination. It seemed the most direct route, and in terms of time it was estimated at 1h 40 from my starting point. On the way back from the forest I again set the SatNav to take me home, as I have only been to this area once before and wasn’t convinced I would be able to navigate my way out. Straight away I noticed that the directions were not the reverse of the way I had come in. The route was different, but still timed at 1h 40 so I assumed it would be the same route back, but perhaps via a slightly different road initially.

As we got further into the journey I realised we were going a totally different way. I was being taken back via Sheffield and down the Snake Pass past Ladybower Reservoir. As we made our winding way down the pass I noticed a solitary white sign on a post pointing up to the hills - “Holmfirth“. My mind jolted. Where did I know that town name from? Then it struck me – that was a town close to the dealership in Honley where I had bought the car, and I had driven through Holmfirth when I first took the car home. This very road was the route I had taken to drive it back! What an amazing coincidence!

I mentioned the coincidence to Kal, and he said, “It’s the car saying goodbye.” M said the same thing later when I relayed the tale. This made me sit and think about the car. Had something at a subliminal level or via some other means brought me back to the starting point with this car? After all – there are only two times that I have driven that route in this car – once when I picked it up, and this last outing to a sacred site in it. Literally the next day I was due to drive the car down to the dealership where I would trade it in for a newer one.

I needed to find out more about this, so I began to think about what the incident might be telling me about energy and ‘inanimate’ materials.

The Souls of Objects

Realising that this car had “something about it” I decided to try to extract its essence and put it into the new car. That was the idea. The old car had been so reliable for me that I wanted to take the “goodness” out of it and put that into the newer car to try to keep the same relationship going. Silly, I know, but at an energetic level it made a sort of fuzzy sense to me.

I decided to try to transfer the energy out of the old car to the new one. This would be difficult as the transfer would take place at a car showroom in the middle of an urban conurbation – not my preferred venue for working this sort of magick. However, druids must “adopt, adapt and improve”, as the old Round Table saying goes. So, I did my best, and with unusual results!

The soul of a car

Firstly, I tried to take the essence out of the old car to move it into the new car. I was able to take out the “goodness” of the old car and hold it in my hand as a glowing ball of energy. That felt strange! Then I tried to transfer this energy to the new car, but I was about to perform the transfer I was faced with a dilemma – the new car already had a positive essence! Something was telling me that the car already had a positive energy and that it was not sensible to “overwrite” that with the energy from the old car. Oh, then what should I do, I asked? I was told that what I could do was to try to merge the two by asking the essences to “co-operate” with each other. So, instead of sending the energy from the old car to the new car I imagined the two energies politely co-operating with each other! That was very strange, but the result felt right.

After performing the merger I sat back feeling good about the work. Something niggled at me, and a voice began to offer more advice. The merger of the two essences was not sufficient to protect the car from failure! I was told that the new essence of the car, its protection, it’s spirit, its reliability, its character – these things were dependent upon how much of my own essence was put into the car from this point forward. Of course! I should have realised this. Now I could begin to grow the good character of the car from the seeds of what I had in the previous car, merged with the essence it already had, and finally combine that with the new feelings and emotional output that I would generate by using it from this point on.

There you have it – my thoughts on the “soul of a car”. Please let me know your own experiences with favourite cars, troubles with cars, and whether you have ever done anything similar to my “soul transfer” between cars you have owned. I’d love to hear your experiences.

Most cars I’ve had have had names and most have been good honest cars. The Huna belief is that everything has a soul and I well believe it of my cars. I praise and pat them for being reliable, and I don’t talk about replacing them where they can hear so I don’t hurt their feelings. My current car, Mr Whippy, has only ever broken down right in the driveway apart from twice when we were parked minutes away at shops. He tries his very best for me and in return I get him serviced regularly and will do my best to keep him running as long as I can. I’ve had two cars in my life that didn’t have that honest nature and both were a pain in the butt for breaking down when it was least convenient, and both were sold on quite quickly.

Ps Not sure I would have thought of taking the ‘soul’ of one and putting it in another. I’m not surprised you found one already in the new car! Begs the question, if the new car had had a less than positive energy, would you be able to ‘tame’ it with your own good energy, like rescuing an emotionally-damaged dog and restoring them to love and health, or would it always retain its negative aspect?

That’s a very good question! I think, I woudl hope, that if a car was that bad I would have sensed it before buying it. I say that because I passed up TWO really good and very cheap alternatives. On the face of it they were perfect but an inner voice said not to go for them. When i dowsed this later the rods confirmed that there was something awry. I didn’t go into what that was (because it could have taken ages to find out, and it was probably different for each car).

In the end the one I bought “fell into my lap” by “accident” and everything felt right straight away. Dowsing the decision confirmed that everything would be fine.

Would one be able to “tame” a tainted car? I guess so, but would you want to put the energy into doing that? I guess it’s like healing a damaged site, or changing the energy of a person? But some things are not worth the effort. There ae many cars out there, so it’s easier just to choose the right one, no?

Thanks for the invite Liz. I tend to stay westward where the sun plays out for longer, but I do have plans to head towards the rising sun before the year’s out.

I hadn’t heard that story about James Dean, but the mere idea gives me the creeps. It’s making me more careful about the emotions I let loose in a car now!

As for poppets, I thought they were just little chocolate sweets! Oh the naivety! The more I come across objects left at various sites and ‘feel’t hem for energy the more I am coming to an understanding about the use and misuse of objects.

However, as a druid who carries a staff I suppose I can’t really be that surprised by the idea that objects retain subtle energy imprints. The subject begins to broaden out when one considers the concept of a ghost, or some of the other energy forms that can be fixed to a place and given an energy source to maintain them.

What an odd world I’ve wandered into! ;-)

Sheffield – land of the rising sun – ha ha! ;-) I really do prefer the west of the country too, I envy you your locale so close to the border of Wales, a place I love dearly. I think even Manchester has something almost ‘Celtic’ about it’s energy, maybe that’s down to so many Irish immigrants moving there, including my own Irish ancestors who came from Ireland to Wigan! But yes, please if you and/or Kal are likely to be my end of the Pennines before the year’s out, let me know :-)

Regarding ‘poppets’ besides being quite yummy chocs, they are also a form of ‘Voodoo doll’ here’s a link to the Boscastle museum of Witchcraft site, with an example of one…

Yes, my daughter told me about the James Dean story, I think it’s supposed to be the inspiration behind the Stephen King novel ‘Christine’. So yes, don’t go sticking pins in people’s cars! ;-)

    Hi Gwas…

We’ve certainly had some real old troopers come our way in car terms over the years, so I know how horrid it is parting with a good reliable car, even though I don’t drive, I need to know my partner is safe and the car is behaving with him! We’ve just scrapped an excellent little Nissan, that and an old Caviler we had, were the best two cars EVER – and seemed to just have this nice ‘vibe’ about them, so yes I know what you mean about a car having a sort of ‘soul’. All this reminds me of that story about the car that killed James Dean, how its constituent parts were sold for scrap and every car that went on to contain parts of that sinister original, were involved in serious and often fatal accidents. If that story’s true and it’s not just an urban legend – then its a rather creepy idea that objects can become imbued with power, but perfectly feasible. I suppose some aspects of witchcraft like the making and use of ‘poppets’ is a part of this phenomena – this building of a thought-form and its transference into an object.

I hope your new car gives you just as much joy as the old Gwas, and if you happen to be that near to my neck of the woods again, please pop by for a cuppa! ;-)

    Liz
