Healing Gawtons Well

Sit down, get yourself a cup of tea! This is a long one. Yet, for all that, it is probably the most interesting experience I have ever had, as it taught me that my new-found abilities have evidence to back them up, and that has been a priceless reminder that following this druidic path is at the heart of my being, despite the moments of doubt along the way.

In the last few months I had my first visit to Knypersley Reservoir. During that visit I confirmed that there was something unwholesome, something that felt ‘bad’ about Gawton’s Well. Of course, such things are subjective, but it felt bad for me, for my friend, and for the person who reported the issue in the first place. Knowing we were all “nice” people, I felt this was sufficient grounds for me to try to reverse the situation, and to make the place feel more inviting to people of a similar disposition to me.

A group of friends had gathered together one late July afternoon for lunch and a chat. I was fidgety. In the back of my mind I knew that we were not far away from the Knypersley site, and it was on my mind to bring the matter to a conclusion soon. I put the matter to the circle of friends and they agreed to come out with me providing that the weather was in our favour. At that time it was sunny one minute and heavy rain the next. We agreed to see how the weather was on arrival. And so I had managed to rally some powerful psychics, mediums and energy workers to help me in my earth healing.

I knew that I was going to need some help from the group. Usually I work alone but after my last encounter with the strength of the force that pervaded the well area I wasn’t going to tackle this alone. In preparation I had done some remote viewing of the site to see if I could find out some information psychically. It was a sort of test of my new-found skills – the skills of the hawk – Gwalchmai’s Gift, if you like. The ability to remotely view a place from an aerial viewpoint.

Here is what I learned when I did that:-

  • The well has been used for dark ritualistic purposes (the group narrowed this down, but I won’t say more here).
  • There are many traps set up in the place – things buried, energetic trip-wires to alert the practitioners to the presence of those who work against them
  • The buried items are at a tree next to the well head, and another about fifteen feet to the left of the well head.
  • The worst element is the polluted well itself, which spreads its black energies out into the surrounding woodland and more importantly the nearby pool

This was the information I had to work with. There were two things that we knew from the previous visit that we would need in order to successfully re-balance the well’s energies – sunlight and joy. The sunlight was looking doubtful, and although there was good-hearted chatter, it was tinged with a wary doubt about what was to come.

As we approached alongside the reservoir two of us stopped – we felt an energetic barrier – like a checkpoint. Over the years I have become accustomed to the feel of such changes in energetic pressure. I liken it to walking outside into a hot day when having been in an air-conditioned room. You can feel a swell of change, like a wave or waft of air signifying a change in pressure between two places, but it is on an energetic level – nothing to do with the actual air temperature. You notice it in your navel region and it makes your diaphragm jerk in response, as though some invisible force was pushing at your abdomen.

I said to the assembly, “Someone knows we’re here.” The most experience of the psychics was calm and reassuring, “Indeed they do, but they can’t do anything about it.” A wry smile cheered everyone up a little.

Knypersley Pool – a place of faery dancing

We arrived at a bridge over a pond and some of the people who hadn’t visited before became entranced by the view of the pond on one side of the bridge wall. Well they might, for this had been the spot where previously Mike had seen nature spirits dancing on the pretty little island that stood in the water at the far end of the pond. Today others too saw the faeries excited at the presence of the group. The rest of us just took the opportunity to gather ourselves whilst there was talk of mini-rainbows exploding over the pond. Those with deeper sight were blessed with a spectacle that the rest of us could only imagine.

As we reconvened to go on there was a moment of silence that spoke volumes about the anticipation levels. I think everyone felt they were readying themselves for a tough energetic battle. A slight dreary rain began to fall as the clouds drew closer together to enhance the gloom.

Princes Kept The View

We passed a watchtower, a curious and incongruous sight amid the placid waters of the reservoir what with its pointed angular and square shapes at unusual angles. We proceeded until we reached a crossing of the paths. This was our marker, and we took a moment to remark that this is a witching spot traditionally. We carried on past the path that led to the well, and decided to visit Gawton’s Stone first.  The general consensus was that this felt like a good place to “power up”. We passed the ‘alignment portal’ feature in the rocks above, and stopped to show everyone who hadn’t seen it before. As we described its properties the others agreed – this side felt male, the other side female. In addition, information emerged that the female energy is being “held in place”, like a blockage of its natural flow.

As we reached the huge Gawton’s Stone I again felt that I couldn’t touch it yet. Others were drawn to it and buzzed around it, clearly energised by it. I sat at the mossy foot of a tree close by watching everyone pawing the mighty rock and drawing energy from the experience. For me the stone emitted a male energy that I felt would imbalance me and which was counter-productive to my natural female energy field. As I sat by the beech tree Mike came over an told me that there was a nature spirit sitting alongside me. This was rather pleasing, as I could feel something was there, but I still can’t see anything like these folks can.

Gawton Stone – Not the side showing the face, but close

As I sat there, half-dozing suddenly my perception shifted, and I saw the stone as a face. The change was incredible – one moment I am looking at the rock and next moment I can see the face clear as day. It’s a lion’s face and mane in profile, with the eye like that of a snake. Of course, once you can see something like that it’s difficult to see it any other way thereafter! I took some photos of the face, but oddly they weren’t on my phone afterwards, but others from the day were. Very peculiar. As I mention the face others begin to tune into the idea and can see it too. One of the psychics points out to me that the energy from the stone comes out of the “mouth” of this face. At that point, with the right perception, I can see the energy emerging like a heat haze from the mouth. Wow!

We energised and protected ourselves. I gave everyone a black tourmaline stone and then we began to make our way back to the path that leads to the well. As I walk away from the stone something calls me back. I have the feeling that if I don’t go back I will miss an opportunity to link into the stone’s spirit of place. I sat back at the foot of the tree and this time I thought about the spirit of the place, and asked for its help with the work we were about to do. Moments later I feel like someone has touched my hand gently, and this makes me feel much better. All the nervousness disappears from me, and I know I can tackle whatever is to come now, so I run back to joint he rest of the gang as they stand at the entrance to the well.

Of Joy and Wellness

As we approached the well we were full of laughter and joy, which is just what was needed. We crossed the threshold gap in the wall without fear and with clear purpose. The weather suddenly became bright sunlight shining through slight drizzle, making the scene surreally lit. Perfect conditions! I mentioned to everyone that this was a good sign, as we had the radiance of the sun and the refraction through the raindrops to add to the sum total of light in the space. It felt like Nature was with us in our work.

Looking down from Gawton’s Well to the entrance

As we entered we each began to assess the place in our own special way. It didn’t feel as bad as it had the last time I had been there, and this was probably because we were entering with protection and guidance this time. Saying that, the more attuned psychics noticed that there was some kind of malign presence close to the entrance, but decided not to give it attention at this point. There are other things to do first – we would come back to this presence later.

The two strongest psychics went straight to the clouties tied to a dying yew tree that was just to the left side of the well head. I noticed that this coincided with the first place I had felt there was something buried, but I let them assess the area first before I did my bit. As people wandered around I warned everyone not to touch the water yet. I felt it was so badly polluted with negative energy that it would negate any good work they had done to gather energy up to now.

After some discussion one of the baubles tied to the tree is removed. The rest of the ribbons can stay, but the energies attached to them needs to be neutralised, so the better healers set about doing this, while I take a look at how I can deal with the water coming into the well itself. I placed my water elemental crystal in the stream at the point where the water comes into the well, and I decide to leave the elemental to do its work. To assist I light some incense to flavour the air.

Gawton’s Well – once polluted now cleansed

I went next in search of the objects that I felt were buried at the site. Rather than rely totally on my new remote visionary abilities I decided to revert back to an old friend – the dowsing rods. After confirming that there were some negative energy spots in the grounds of the well, I asked the rods simply “Take me to the strongest negative energy centre!“. The rods swung away from the well and pointed towards the tree with the ribbons tied to it – the dying yew tree. They crossed at the base of the tree, so I began to dig at the roots with the tips of the rods – clawing away at the rich peaty earth. I had dug about an inch when I stopped – was I really expecting to find something? This was madness! How could I expect to find anything from a stupid vision! Out of sheer bloody-mindedness I gave myself another minute of digging before I would give up. Another inch down into the soil and I was just about to give up when the rods pulled at something that didn’t feel like a root. I lifted the object with the tip of the dowsing rod, exclaiming in surprise. A dark lens from  pair of sunglasses emerged from the soil, a sinister object in a shady place.

We took it away without touching it directly, and tried to break it. It turned out to be made of stern stuff, and we cracked the first rock we used to try to smash it! However, we pounded away at it until it lost its power, and then we removed it from the site and left it in the care of a helpful tree, whose energies could re-balance it.

Dark lens used as dark ritual object

Back to the rods to ask the question again – any more negative spots? YES. Please take me to the most powerful negative place. The rods began to move further to the left of the site, just as I had seen in the vision. I was forced to duck underneath a low-hanging branch of a yew tree, and there, nestled amidst the leaves, camouflaged by the darkness was a totem object – a bundle of twigs tied together. The rods crossed over the bundle. I felt something pushing at my protective sphere. Oh yes, this was the second object I had ‘seen’!

I placed a set of crystals around this to drain the energy, and then I destroyed the totem piece by unwrapping it and scattering its contents around. Perhaps the object might once had been a positive totem object? I knew it wasn’t now, and I suspect it never had been, but I just knew that the site’s energies were free now to return to their natural flow, whereas their course had been changed to flow through these two ‘special’ objects before, and the site had felt darkened by the placement of these objects.

A well-hidden artefact of black magic

Happy that my two pre-perceived objects were now removed I went back to check on the actions of the water elemental crystal placed in the flow of the well water to change the frequency. Over the course of the past fifteen minutes the water now felt much better, but this was just my subjective feeling. I asked the others what they thought and found that they had placed my large rose quartz crystal into the lower end of the stream feeling that this was the area that now needed the most work.

I picked up my dowsing rods again. Was there anything that was causing this lower end of the well water to become polluted, I asked the rods? YES, came the answer. OK – please take me to the source of this pollution, I asked. The rods swung around to point back towards the yew tree that I had just been working beneath. Oh! Was there something else, I wondered? The rods led me on a winding course back along the path carved by the small rivulet that joined the main watercourse from the well. As the water got to the yew tree it emerged from a spring beneath the tree. Sitting at the point where the water emerged was a rusted double circle of wire! This was no casual deposit! We identified the object as the inner wire circles used to demarcate the sections of a dartboard. The way the object was placed at the head of the stream so that the water had to run through the circle of rusted wire looked too contrived to be accidental! This was the final hateful object that was polluting this site.

Rusted ring sours the stream at Gawton’s Well

Mike lifted the rusted ring on a twig he’d picked up off the floor. As he raised the object for everyone to see the skies darkened suddenly and there was a horrifying clap of thunder that made everyone jump! The coincidence of timing was written on everyone’s faces, some looking scared and others surprised. Mike bravely removed the ring using the twig to carry it outside the area of the well, and then he set about enlisting the help of another tree to neutralise the energies of this object too. I lit nine small tea-light candles and placed them on the top of the well to try to re-inject some light into the proceedings, if only to symbolically counteract the covering darkness. Lightning flashed and the thunder pealed again and then the heavens opened deluging the site in a torrent of rain. We realised it was a sign of clearance.

Thunder and rain signify the cleansing change in energies at Gawton

As the rain fell the skies brightened and the sun began to pour out along with the rain. The sparkle of light as the sun shone through the heavy raindrops was delightful to observe under the cover of the old yew trees. As the rains ceased the stream didn’t feel polluted. The site felt cleansed and clear…apart from one bit. All that remained was the dark guardian that had been recognised as present close to the gateway as we had entered.

We set to work at once while the sunlight was still strong.  The ladies gathered in the gateway holding incense sticks that I had given them. The men stood either side holding important crystals. We directed the energy of these crystals we held towards the dark form of the guardian whilst the ladies projected positive energies towards the thought-form. Very quickly the thought-form simply dissolved without any form of struggle in the face of such powerful positive magick.

We all gathered to clean up – removing traces of our energies. Concerns were expressed over whether the persons responsible for abusing the site could trace us through our work, but one of the experienced practitioners told us that she had deliberately prevented that from happening, and that the general atmosphere of the place would prevent that anyway, now that the light filled the space. The frequency of the energies there would stave off further harmful work for a long while.

We went back to the stone in order to re-energise and ground ourselves. One of the psychics said we were being led by a druid, and for once in my mind I saw the overlay of a white-robed figure showing us the way to go by offering a guiding hand.  We all quickly felt much better after being around the stone and the nature spirits who were nearby. All told we all felt we had done excellent re-balancing and healing work in what could have been a very difficult situation. It took some bravery and the combined skills of several experienced energy workers to return Gawton’s Well back to the positive space that it was always intended to be.

SO much for always working alone, eh? What’s happening to this Hedge Druid? I seem to have found some very nice helpful people to work with, and I’m actually enjoying the experience. How times have changed!

I know what you took from the tree at Gawtons well because i put it there it was a rosery and I was asked to put it there by my friend who was dying of cancer at the time she has since died the baubles and clouties on the tree are offerings for our lady the goddess I have never done any black magic and have always abided by the Wiccan rede by the way my friend was a phycic medium she asked me to hang it there because it “felt funny” she was hoping that the energy at the well would neutralise it but if the well was already polluted perhaps it didn’t work but it was NEVER part of a satanic ritual or any sort of black magic of that I can assure you.
I love it at Gawtons well it is a fabulous place for meditating or just sitting and soaking up the woodland atmosphere i find it a calming place i hope I have not offended with this post but felt Ihad to say something

    • Gwas says:

      Hello,
I am not offended at all. I can assure you that your rosary was not one of the objects that we had to deal with at Gawtons Well. The object removed was a bauble from the tree. Other different objects were unearthed and removed too. It no beads were amongst that list.

Thank you that has made me feel better. Then I don’t know what has happened to it I was worried that you may think it was put there for reasons of Dark Magic and it wasn’t thank you for your time.
        Bright Blessings Gwas

        • Gwas says:

All who were present that day recognised that most of the object placed there were put there with good intentions. One has always to consider, though, that object left can have their energies used for alternative purposes!

These days I try to walk lightly and leave no traces. I realise this was not always the case with our ancestors, so if I do leave something I ensure that it is both physically and spiritually protected, and more importantly disconnected from me!

Having said that, dark energy workers are more likely to fashion their own items than to re-use existing ones, I have found.

May you tread lightly but achieve much.

Oh wow Gwas – that is one awesome tale! Of course as you might imagine the thing that jumped right out at me was you seeing the Lion face in the rock – that really warmed my heart and confirmed that you had good protection that day. This Lion/Lady spirit told me she was working with all energy workers in this land, bringing us together and unifying our efforts – she told me we were ‘beloved of the hosts of heaven’ which might sound a bit odd and biblical, but somehow it was said in the most beautiful and sweet way, as if said to a child by its mother. I’m so pleased to see you out with other folk Gwas – I really do believe in the power of combined human minds and hearts working together – this is what the singing dream I had about you was all about, and you do have those leadership qualities too, I pick that up from you strongly, you’ve been some powerful people in your past lives too – from what I’ve seen and felt in dreams, but I daresay you’d be skeptical of that ;-)

Goodness – another coincidence – David Cowan commenting above me – the very gentleman that brought me to your blog – how thankful I am to him for that – thank you David and thank you Gwas :-) Btw – hope you got my long mail about Carn Brea OK!!

    • Gwas says:

      Hi Liz,

I know! David Cowan commenting on our humble blog. He was one of my najor influences too. Very nice to see his comment.

I’m going to respond in full via e-mail, but I wanted to pick out two things here:-

      1. Coincidence #1 – the lion spirit. I’d forgotten about that completely. Beautiful reminder. Made me “jump” a bit when I read it too.
      2. Coincidence #2 – in your mail you mention “the site had once been ‘a tree of life’ site”. Literally two minutes ago I began a draft post on exactly that subject, then I read your comment, then I went to view your mail.

I don’t know why I’m surprised at this any more. Connections are building amongst we energy workers, and this year more than any other I’m feeling this. Hence my work with others in the area. I’m sure we’ll get to work together too soon, although we already are in so many ways and on so many levels.

Right – going to read your mail in full, and then respond properly when I can. Busy packing/preparing for a week’s holiday, but will fit it in somehow.
      Gwas.

      • Liz says:

I love the coincidences Gwas, I’m glad you do too – it really excites me, and I think you begin to feel a real joy inside, a feeling of connectedness – we are after all, a social species like any mammal ;-) I believe in ancient times, although there may have been a spiritual leader in a community, a lot of magic was worked by the group as a whole, the more input from other humans, the greater the energy, providing you’re all on the same page of course! I really hope too, we get to work together in person, I’m really nervous about meeting you both to be honest – I hope I don’t disappoint!LOL We’ll have to discuss it and arrange a date and place, bearing in mind I don’t drive, but I’m sure I can work something out :-)

This account of clearing Gawton well has really haunted me since reading it, I think you all discovered some incredible things and that thunder storm suddenly erupting – OMG – wow!! It reminds me of the rain that gathered over Men-an-Tol when I was in Cornwall, something really DID happen. I can imagine if more of us had been present, then it would have been magnified, perhaps to scary proportions!

I can’t wait to discover your findings on Carn Brea Gwas, I hope you get time to write before you go away, as I’m off too next week to Taunton and of course wondering if I should be doing something there first, like i discussed with you. Either way, I hope you have a good break, is this the Green man btw? ;-)

        Liz :-)

        • Gwas says:

Green Man indeed. You know it? We went last year and loved it (although it’s a bit ‘straight’ for our tastes, but we always aim to liven it up a little with our weirdness).

Will do my best with Carn Brea et al. Things get hectic before we leave due to animals, plants and work.

          Gwas.

          • Liz says:

Yes – I mentioned it in my mail I believe, how we were swamped by rain and said never again! I like that you think the festival is ‘straight’ ye Gods – I wonder what sort of weirdness you get up to in that case – oo-er! ;-) Don’t worry if you’re busy Gwas, I’m sure it can wait until you get home, hope you have a great time, whatever strange things you get up to, surely you can’t be stranger than me?! :-)

          • Gwas says:

Finally got to the end of your mail and responded. Shame about Green Man. It’s a bit … straight… as a festival, but very welcoming. This will be our second year, but I think we’ll do something else next year. I smell heavy rain, which as you say, is only going to make the experience dreary.

  • David Cowan says:

Extremely interesting. I am with a group who do healing work here in Crieff, Perthshire, and are busy clearing many of the unhealthy areas in town. My two female friends cleared out most of the malevolent energy from the local burial ground, and several other places. My own specialist work is in using divining rods to find and follow the negative energies each place emit. See my website http://www.ley-man.co.uk.
    Best Wishes,
    David R. Cowan

    • Gwas says:

It’s good to hear that the clearing of energetic places is continuing in all parts of these islands. The work is so rewarding in such subtle ways that we are often inclined to wondering what the extent or the impact of our work has upon the wider community, and even the land itself. Were it not for dowsing I doubt whether I would ever know!

May I say, David, that your work is one of the foundation stones upon which my own work is based? Without your seminal published works on the subject of dowsing for earth energies, their behaviours and properties, it is unlikely that I would have got as far as I have in my own dowsing work.

Thanks for posting a good reminder to everyone reading about your web site, which is crammed with information on death energies, spirals, leys and earth energy lines. A must-read for everyone interested in how energy interacts with place, in this life and beyond.

      Highest regard,
      Gwas.

      • David Cowan says:

        Gwas,
Glad you like my books and website.
I discovered a long time ago that a wide ley stream, when it crossed an area of pollution, dirty canal, for instance, changed its character to unhealthy.
Likewise an unhealthy ley stream would be changed to healthy when it crossed a clean tumbling Highland river, presumably picking up healthy negative ions.
On a different topic, here in Crieff there are a number of youngsters starting a coven, on Facebook, which I joined, thinking I might meet some like minded people.
Unfortunately, after a small article on how my friends had taken the energy from a standing stone which had been placed in a church and transmitted the energy from it to a fibreglass copy in the main square I got so much abuse from this “coven”, telling me that I knew nothing about ley line and should leave it up to them, etc.
I pointed out that there was a bad ley line running through the head witch’s house, and shop where she worked. this ley came from a stone circle which recently had the heart of a large animal in its centre. She pointed out rather rudely “what is wrong with using animal parts in witchcraft?”
I took it that this sort of thing was used only by those working in the black arts.
Can anyone enlighten me on this – it is not my scene?
        Best Wishes,
        David R. Cowan

        • Gwas says:

          Hi David,

I guess that people who are ‘energetically aware’ may be in short supply up there in Crieff? Rest assured there are plenty of us around who both respect your work and your hard-earned knowledge.

Energy working is such a mis-understood topic, even by those who practise it, that we ought to be prepared for the occasional rebuke. Certainly I get some on this forum, no matter how principled I try to be. I must admit that in the course of my learning I have made mistakes, but I have always stuck by two golden rules:-

          a) My intentions must be as pure as possible at the time, and the aim must be for restoring the balance above any personal gain
          b) If I make a mistake I must be prepared to learn how to rectify it, and I must make every endeavour to resolve it before it causes harm

With those rules I don’t think that you can go far wrong, even when you’re experimenting with energy creation, transfer and dissipation. We have to work to know.
Now, when it comes to working with ley energy, that’s quite a mad thing to play around with. I avoid having prolonged contact with ley energy. Rarely do I find it beneficial. It has power, certainly and I understand that it is used as a source from which male, female, or combinations of energies can be drawn. However, what do you do with the energy flow once you’ve finished with it? It keeps on coming! I find it’s something to “dip into” rather than to have permanently fixed on a place where I spend long periods of time,

Now, what of these magic workers? Well, firstly, they’re young. How much do you think they really understand yet, versus how much are they experimenting? When I was that age I was playing with things I didn’t understand for sure. Perhaps someone around with experience to guide their activities into a fruitful series of works would be just what they need. Perhaps they’ll tell you to sod off when they start getting into the really dark stuff?

People of all sorts of persuasions work with animal parts. Druids are very particular to such things. Personally, I can’t abide them, and have little affinity with animals whether living or dead. However I have often used feathers and skulls (as you have found too – these seem to act as attractors due to their porous/hollow features).

My inclination is to add three things together: youth + rebuke + animal parts. Like you I would tend to come to a more dark arts conclusion. You really need to see how they are being used, though, and the sorts of ritual that accompanies the work. Invocations in search of personal power calling upon deities to assist with the work? Take, take, take = Dark arts. Blessings to the kind spirits, and a seeking of knowledge? Wishes for energy to be given away rather than taken from things? More the province of Druidry, earth-centred religions and shamanism.

Hope that helps you decide on your new friends. Personally, I’d dowse for it ;-)
          Gwas.
