Ouija boards – Wetting your appetite Part 1 of 2
The YesNo board
The other day I was asked about my thoughts on the Ouija board and using it. The asker knew about my explorations in the paranormal and that was the impetus for their question.
In my life I’ve had 3 experiences with an OuiJa board. Two of these were as a user (when Iwas a naive student) and the third was dealing with the consequences of someone else’s use. All 3 encounters had put me off for life, however, in answer to the questioner I said, give me a few days and I’ll let you know.
My problem is this, many people have used the OuiJa board and have reported a boring evening. Lot’s right? Derren Brown the famed (in the UK) illusionist has proclaimed that it is all to do with an idemotor effect. What I wanted to know (in a dowsing sense) was why were many encounters boring and others more interesting?
The question that immediately came to mind was…
- “is the Ouija board accessing the same Knowledge source as dowsing rods?”
That moved me to other questions…
- “were we contacting the shades of dead people?”
- Were we contacting entities?
- Was there a reason as to why most of the time nothing exciting happened?
- Was this to do with the energies of the place?
- Was it to do with the energies of the people?
- Did astronomical/astrological energies play a part?
Further questions were asked…
- Was it safe to use an Ouija board?
- Was it safe if we put protection up?
- Could it be made safer?
- Which of these was the key factor?
Still, this is all conjecture (I love that word) so against my own historical feelings. I decided to consider having another bash at this dangerous pastime.
This is a wet your appetite post…ask your intuition in whatever way you fancy. what do you think (feel) the answers are to the above questions?
Kal Malik – dangerous experiments
The Promise of Imbolc 2012
I had a chain of sites in mind for Imbolc this year. Kal and I had already gone through the list and dowsed an order or preference based upon the energetic requirements of the people who would be there – Kal, Mike and myself. For Kal the important sites would be Lud’s Church and St Helen’s Well. For myself and Mike the important site would be The Bridestones. In addition I wanted to show Kal Clulow Cross too, but then I sprung a surprise on everyone. Marton Chapel near Congleton, Cheshire would be our first site.
For some reason I needed to go to Marton Chapel. I didn’t know why but something about it appealed to me. I don’t even remember how I came across the name of this church. Somehow, in some research one evening, the name appeared. The name had been written down on a piece of paper for several weeks now, but Imbolc felt like the time to pay the place a visit. I dowsed some possible reasons for going, using educated and intuitive guesses to get the questions. The result was that I believed I might meet with the shade (the emergetic remainder) of someone who wanted to speak with me. How odd! Really? I was curious, but also cautious, and checked to see whether this was a good idea. The dowsing rods told me it was. OK – let’s do it and see what happened!
Grounding and smiling
As we pulled into the churchyard I could see that this was at least going to be a wonderful photograph. The clear blue Winter sky formed a perfect backdrop for the quaint timber-framed church building. It was delightful and the moods of the assembled companions – Mike, Kal and I – could not have been merrier. I wandered for a moment but then felt like I was being drawn to one of the yew trees near the rear end of the church – it’s eastern end. I found a clear spot beneath the tree and knew this was the position. I got my dowsing rods out and walked back a few paces. In all innocence and with the most objectivity I could muster I asked for the best place for me to be right now – I was led in a tight curl back to the place I had been standing. This was the strongest energy point for me.
Seconds later Kal turns up and confirms the spot as the strongest, but says that all the shades have been drawn into the tree by its incredible strength. Already I knew what he was talking about. I could feel the pulling momentum of the tree as it was drawing energy into its trunk and down through its roots. To say that Yew trees are excellent at energy grounding is akin to saying that the sky was blue. Mike was also interested in the tree, offering a different perspective on proceedings by confirming the strength of the attractive power, and adding that it is generating a “happy”, “laughter” energy. It did feel good to stand beneath its branches, that was undeniable. We all were smiling just by being close to it. We were being grounded and cleansed, and that felt good.
Spiral Part 1: A call to the nine ladies
- Do you follow your dreams?
The other night I was sleeping like a babe in arms when I awoke suddenly and was fortunate enough to recall the dream I was having. It was set in the (semi) wilds of Derbyshire at a sacred that many of you will now be familiar with, the Nine Ladies.
Was this a call to visit that site? Or just a reordering of my subconscious thoughts? I was after all reading through some of our exploits on this blog. Since I have just finished reading Dowsing by Elizabeth Brown (who keeps a set of rods in her handbag), I decided to grab the rods (yes, in the middle of the night, with eyes half awake) and ask…
- Was that dream an indicator to go to the nine ladies sacred site? Yes
- Should I go now (3:40a.m.) No. (In honesty I wouldn’t have gone at that time, but it would have been nice to know I was missing some opportunity).
- Should I go during the coming day? Yes.
- Was this because Imbolc had come early for me? No.
- Was there something for me to learn there? Yes.
- Was today the only time I could learn this? Yes.
- On a scale of 1-10 how valuable would this knowledge be? 9! Wow!
- Just as a comparison, what scale was last years Knights Quest be, relatively speaking? 23!
As it happened the next day was free and so I toodled off towards them there hills…As I drove the one and a half hours I wondered if I would encounter any of the spritely beings that Gwas had encountered upon his last visit. I have not had the fortune of having such a spirit infested experience but am game to frolic some (as Pan would testify I hope).
Nine Ladies
I arrived at the site with my usual wet feet (no rain but plenty of dew) and asked for permission to enter. Now I know what you’re thinking. Which alien has kidnapped Kal and could we have the sacred-site disrespecting fellow back please! But as my research, some of it which has filtered onto this blog, is showing me Thresholds are important.
- A quick note. I am currently in the middle of writing an eBook on Thresholds coming this summer.
Thus you find me connecting with the Genius Loci and asking for permission. It was granted instantly and I was my usual self of wandering around the site…letting it know me and me know it (energy-wise). I also nodded to the cantankerous Oak (we have issues) off to one side and meandered over to the King Stone.
All the while I had my senses out for any energies (pixies or anything else) and nothing was sensed. To be frank I think Gwas is so way ahead of me in communing with nature spirits. Anyway I was through the circle in the direction of the king stone when I spotted a lady up by the stone. Being sociable I slowed my walk a bit but continued on. Getting closer I had a shock.
Interlude…a fair few years ago (5 maybe 6) I was with a friend in Borders bookshop in Ellsemere Port. As I walked through the store along the enclaves of books at the back of the shop. My body snapped to a stop, did a double take and reversed passed the enclave I had just passed. Standing in the enclave was the most amazing woman I have ever seen. I’m not saying she was gorgeous or anything. It was that energy literally flowed out of her. In todays parlance I might have said that she was a walking power center of white light. I just stopped in front of her and stared. She didn’t bat an eyelid at this and smiled at me. Eventually I stammered something like, “you are beautiful” and stepped away.
I got the same reaction from this lady at the stone. She was stroking or touching the stone as I approached but boy did she radiate energy. As you may know I have communed with Caileach in the ast but that experience wasn’t as visceral and earthy as this. At that moment, this lady could have been a Goddess. I walked over to her (well the stone), almost in reverence and…was speechless.
- “the energies are warm today aren’t they?” she said. It was frickin freezing, but I acquiesced, “Yes, they are.”
- “I like this place, do you come often?” she asked me, “Perhaps once a season, how about you?”
- “It’s my first time, I’m not from around here”
The conversation continued as we walked around the sacred stones. She was a Maori and was visiting a email-friend in the UK. Interestingly she wouldn’t give her name (I was a trust-worthy person she said as she refused to say her name). I told her that I had had a dream that night and had thus travelled to this sacred site.
- “dreams often show us the start of a journey not its conclusion”
Interesting wisdom, considering Imbolc was approaching. I mentioned this to her, but she said that she was “one with her homeland” and thus it was still the summer “in her eyes”.
I liked her turn of phrase I have to say and being highly mutable myself you may find such words escaping my lips. Though I don’t think I could replicate the panache (or is it aplomb) with which she spoke. Yes, I was quite captivated with her subtle energy.
She asked whether I was an energy worker and I replied that I was a modest worker (what happened to my ego? Wake up already). “perhaps we could do some work together?” she asked and I said, what did you have in mind, to which she replied “I sing to energy” . Okay…
I was sat some five feet away from the king stone (her preferred stone to work with) in the direction of the circle and she sat on it. I had dowsed the position once she had intimated that she was going to sit on the king stone. I also dowsed for facing position and got a direction facing the nine ladies.
So, I was sat facing the stones as this Maori lady began to hum a tune. I don’t know what I was expecting. I guess the closest I have come to hearing anything from that neck of the woods is aboriginal twanging type noise. However this lass was letting flow a rhythmic sound. A bit like an angel choir. But whereas with an Angel choir you might have a slow and gentle rhythm, this lasses was quite fast and increased over time. As she sang I felt and saw energy flowing around me and through me down to the circle and then up again along paths that Gwas and I had dowsed on other occasions. It was as if her singing was pushing and pulling the energy around the circuit. Although one might think that this was an unpleasant experience, quite the contrary it was a lovely flow, like catching a warm breeze on a cold day.
We did this for quite sometime and I felt like the flow of energies was washing me clean, energetically speaking. After she was done singing I asked her what and why she had sung like she did. She said she hadn’t. “the earth sung me” Which I took to mean that she sang in harmony with the earth.
I would have loved to have talked to this visitor more but alas for her tempus fugit and so I was left thinking that this experience itself had been a dream. A dream that has left me with a new song to sing.

Somebody Else’s Problem Field
A few years ago we lost that remarkable genius, Douglas Adams. Both Gwas and I have been a fan of his work for years. From the original Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy (known amongst aficionados as hhgttg, or H2G2) to the less famous, but equally recommended Dirk Gently series.
Not a month goes by when we come across a life situation that is comically mirrored in either of the above mentioned series. One such example we have purloined for the energy world was referred to in the hhgttg as The S.E.P Field.
Somebody Else’s Problem
From the book then we have…
An SEP is something we can’t see, or don’t see, or our brain doesn’t let us see, because we think that it’s somebody else’s problem…. The brain just edits it out, it’s like a blind spot. If you look at it directly you won’t see it unless you know precisely what it is. Your only hope is to catch it by surprise out of the corner of your eye.
The technology involved in making something properly invisible is so mind-bogglingly complex that 999,999,999 times out of a billion it’s simpler just to take the thing away and do without it……. The “Somebody Else’s Problem field” is much simpler, more effective, and “can be run for over a hundred years on a single torch battery.”
This is because it relies on people’s natural predisposition not to see anything they don’t want to, weren’t expecting, or can’t explain. [source]
As I said, Gwas and I have purloined this phrase to describe a rather interesting phenomena that is put out (or radiated like a field) by energetic entities. As you will have read on a few occasions Gwas and I have interacted with energetic awareness or entities that have been bad for our energy. Out in the wilds we have sometimes referred to them as Leprechaun Energy. The SEP field described herein is more to do with bad energies we have found in homes.
Often we have found these entities lingering in homes (even our own homes) and have thought to do something about them. Which (again as demonstrated) we are quite able to do. However an unusual energy that these entities put out can only be referred to as an SEP field. Basically the phenomena can be described thus…
We will find, or be told of, a bad energy in a home. We will resolve to do something about it. We might get a look in to dowse the thing but whenever we think to do something about it, a lethargy sets in or some other task will seem more important or we will just plain forget it. Only to recall hours later (or even days) that we were meant to fix something.
We have named this phenomena an SEP field, in honour of Douglas Adams, whose works continue to inspire us. Some other notes on this field are…
- Distance seems to be a factor in that the further you are the more you can think about it.
- It is usually something in your own home rather than someone else’s (we seem to be able to deal with entities in other people’s houses).
- We are more able to talk about them with each other rather than think about them when we are on our own. This seems to be related to the above point in that the SEP field might only affect the home owner/resident.
- This invisibility field is related to the strength of the entity. The stronger the entity the stronger the field.
- Putting up protection does not seem to work in resolving the field.
- It seems that they really do have to be caught off guard. i.e. in passing we will think of it, grab our rods and do something about it.
To say that these fields are annoying is an understatement. Because they seem to affect the owner (in this case Gwas or I) we have founded them (and I quote) “Maddening”

Dark Entities and SEP fields
Gwas here. I’d like to add my information as a supplement to Kal’s points. I agree with everything he’s said so far, but there are a few additional things I’d like to explore that have come to my attention about this problem.
The first aspect is that the phenomenon may not be linked solely to “bad”, “dark” or “ill-intentioned” energy forces. Certainly, is it much more within the nature of the deceitful spirit to want to keep its presence quiet, or force anyone’s attention away from its workings. That is defnitiely one aspect fo what’s going on here. However, I feel that all intelligent unseen entities have this capability. How it gets used may differ according to the entity’s personal character and motivations.
So, I think there is a level of assumed intelligence in operation here. That means that you are potting your wits against anything that you can detect is using an SEP field to distract your thoughts away from its work, and you may question why it would want to do that to you. Is it for your benefit, or because it wants to keep you in a particular state of iignorance and apathy?
This would be the point at which you should determine whether you are a “food source” for this entity!
Draining and complaining
One of the symptoms of being energetically drained by an intelligent entity is that the “victim” begins to complain about lethargy. As the victim’s energy field is depleted they may begin to take steps to generate mroe energy, but to no avail. They may begin to do more exercise but just feel tired. They may eat more but not be satisfied. They may do more spiritual or psychic work but find that this is not as productive or as helpful as they are used to. They may become ill more frequently. At this point you may begint o get really concerned about the effects of this force, and rightly so.
As Kal has pointed out, putting up protection is not going to stop you being drained. If you are already having your energy depleted then whatever protection you put up is likely to be at the very least weakened, and at best it may have a temporary protective effect, but it’s going to cost you energetically to maintain this protection. So what can you do? Get help! Either from someone who knows what they’re dealing with, or if you have the knowledge of how to do this yourself, then begin to take steps to deal with it. Here is my recommendation for the self-help process:-
- Get out of its way – go somewhere far away from it’s influence, and make sure that you haven’t taken it with you.
- Visit a place of power. Open yourself up to this place’s healing and re-balancing, its energising and nourishing energies, and get your energy levels back up. This may take more than one visit. You wil have to identify such a place of power yourself. You already know one, even if you think you don’t.
- Learn about the entity. You may need to be far from it to do this. Why not start in your place of power? Find out about it – male/female, beneficial/harmful, strength, any impressions about its intentions, was it human once/nature spirit, and so on. Knowledge will help you. Tarot cards are a good way to reveal information.
- Confront it when you’re at your strongest. Catch it off guard. Psychically get hold of it and act out the act of cutting the connection it has made to you. Then send it away with your strong intention and the pwoer of your will. Act this out physically if this helps, with gestures and expressions.
- Seal the area. Put up protection around yourself and the affected area (maybe your home) to prevent it coming back in easily.
- Watch for its return. Some entities are clever and persistent, and will try to get back at you if you have been a good source of energetic ‘food’. Watch for its return.
Of course, these are pathetically generalised instructions, but they may help you find your own way to deal with these things.
Other things that can help you focus are: burn incense to clear the space, use crystals (especially quartz) to focus intent and energies and offer some additional protection.
I would recommend reading about other methods by such writers as Ted Andrews, David Furlong or Judy Hall. Fore-warned is fore-armed, as they say. My main advice is – don’t ignore these things just because they want to be ignored. That’s usually a sign that you should be finding out what it is that wants you to be unaware!
Gwas.
Kal here again. I was pondering this some more last night when I had a thought. Perhaps the reason why our protection against such SEP fields wasn’t working was because they were already inside our threshold?
Thinking back over our experiences, I feel that the SEP field is more like a chameleon’s camouflage i.e. something innate rather than something that is intended. Just a feeling I have. Also I suspect that historically we were more able to see/sense these creatures than we are now. Hence why there were more reports of supernatural beings in the past than there are now. Perhaps this is because belief has waned?
I really like Gwas’s self-help ideas. Perhaps a how-to post is in the offing? I would point out though that the SEP field itself stops us from doing these things. Even as I write this I know that there is some energetic thing in the other room that is actively stopping me from thinking about it. Maybe I should do something about it now…just let me finish another post…

A Grandfather’s Message
Last month I visited one of Manchester’s north-eastern satellite towns called Shaw.I went on a whim, and had map-dowsed the place I should go to, only to find that it had family connections – my grandparents had lives there. I remember visiting my grandmother in Shaw, but my grandfather had died before I was born, so I never knew him except via a photograph. When I got there I was directed to go and meet with the shade of my grandfather. He told me that he had a special message for me, and that I would need to return just before Samhain in order to obtain the information.
I waited eagerly until close to the fated time and then began to get twitchy – when would the day be best to do this? I dowsed it out and found that Wednesday 26th October would be the ideal date, and then the energy associated with this task would wane very quickly. Only one slight snag with that date – I was due to attend a day’s course in London for work and I couldn’t do otherwise!
By Wednesday evening I had almost given up hope of making it back from London in a reasonable time. Traffic was terrible, the weather was bad, and I had missed my motorway junction right at the start adding half an hour to my journey time. Several hours later I was in two minds as to whether to go, given that I only got back home at 9pm. Nevetheless I went, travelling an hour north past Manchester to reach the hills above Shaw. Call it dedication. Call it madness. Call it a calling. I made the journey in the darkness and dampness.
Having recce’d the site before everything was straightforward, even though it was dark this time. I knew where to park, how to get to the hill, and what kind of path to expect. Even though it was new moon and there was no moonlight the hill was oddly lit. Maybe it was the ambient lighting of the towns in the valley below?
The dowsing rods led me to the same place as last time to communicate – a small semi-circular recess slightly back from the edge of the sheer drop into nothingness at the edge of the Besom Hill‘s sheer edge. Oh yes, “Besom Hill”. as in “besom broomstick” associated with witches. On Halloween. I know. Again – I was completely ignorant of this until I came to write this post up and view the place on an OS map. Really! This is just how these things happen.

I crassly asked for a physical sign of my grandfather’s presence. This was responded to by a distant boom, like a loud firework going off or a thunderclap. I took this to be fireworks because Bonfire Night was only a week or so away, and I tried again. Same thing. I asked for one more time. Same happened again. I asked for something more local to happen, and nothing happened. I can’t be sure what happened really, whether I was repsonded to or not, but the dowsing rods confirmed the presence of a spirit that responded as my grandfather.
I put some crystals around me to enhance my protection and focus the spirit. We communicated, and after a few minutes I began to see images and hear my voice talking about ancestors. It was talking about gathering the energy of my ancestors and accumulating that energy to enhance my own personal power – not in an egotistical way, more as a means to increase my abilities. My grandfather’s spirit suggested strongly that I should begin a task of going around finding and collecting any remaining family ancestor energies.
I asked if it was the same thing to obtain the energy of a spirit such as the one I had obtained co-operation from at Clun Castle. The answer was NO. This was different. Then I was shown a picture of ancient people going into megalithic sites to go through a ritual to commune and merge with their ancestors’ spirits. I asked if I could do the same. I felt something sit with me in the same place as I was, and then it began to merge with me so that I was seeing through its eyes, which were my eyes, because it was also seeing through me. I felt the energy form become one with me and I shivered a little, even though I was warm.
I dowsed as to what had just happened. My grandfather’s energy had entered into my own energy form. I had been protected against other spirits doing this, and had only allowed the spirit of my grandfather to do this, so I was happy that I had got the right energy form. I set off back home and got diverted back a junction again on the M62 motorway. Really, someone or something was trying to make this as difficult as possible for me! I was tired enough already from nine hours of driving that day!
When I got home I dowsed if any change had occurred to me – YES, my spiritual and magickal power had increased. I don’t know what this means yet, or how I could measure it, or what the consequences might be, but it was an interesting experience. Time will tell if it was beneficial! In terms of collecting my ancestor spirits – one down and several to go?
Gwas.
Clun Castle and The Shade of the Warlock
On our Shropshire outing I had planned to visit several hill forts. Having completely failed to be able to park anywhere near one of them, and having had our potential parking space stolen by someone else (seriously – we were in the middle of nowhere – where did that person come from?) we moved on. No hill forts for us today – too little time and too much to do! We scooted off and headed for the next scheduled destination.
For most of the afternoon we had been seeing signs for the three or four main towns and villages in the area. There were literally only three or four places within a twenty square mile area, so we kept seeing the same names. Every time we pass a sign saying “Clun” Kal would parrot it back, as though it was some kind of fanciful legendary location that could be willed to appear. Minutes later we turned a corner to travel along the floor of a valley with a wide U-shaped basin and in the distance we spied a looming sunlit tower and half a wall. A castle? Cool! We continued towards it with our eyes on the prize, as it were. A few minutes later we saw a sign denoting the name of the village we were entering… “Welcome to Clun”. Destiny is our SatNav.
The sun was beckoning us out of the car as we parked in the convenient and free parking lot. The public toilets appeared to be musical, and the whole village seemed bright and welcoming. We both loved it immediately. We crossed the sturdy wooden bridge over the slow-moving glassy river. We each picked our own dowsed path beyond that as we began our trek over and around the imposing majesty of the grassy mound before us, wondering where we would be led to.
I stopped to dowse for some indication of what I would find at this place, after all, there is no point hurtling headlong into nothing. The answer that came back after several questions was something that I could learn from. OK, well that was pretty general, but I knew it was not related to my current quest, only that it would enhance my progress generally. Well and good. Onwards to whatever!
Autumn Equinox on Anglesey 2011 – Part 3
In the final part of my Autumn Equinox posts from the island of Anglesey I talk about my visit to the wonderful and mysterious mound of Bryn Celli Ddu with my psychic friend Mike. As you might expect given the company I was in this was a different experience than my usual dowsing visits, and I was also able to find out what the next final part of my healing quest would entail for the next few weeks.
Bryn Celli Ddu
We walked the gravelly path to the ancient mound buoyed by expectation. Our visit to Barclodiad Y Gawres had been disappointing, but now the sun was trying to break through the cloud cover, and the wind was easing back from its incessant howl. Of course, as always happens, we passed some visitors heading away from the site as we approached. This is such a busy place!
As we walked down the path I again “noticed” the moss-covered stone at the corner of the final approach path. As we walked round the corner I saw my old friend the ash tree – one of the tree guardians of the site. I paid my respects and passed the time of day without expecting a response. Mike, however, got rejected when he tried a similar approach. I giggled a little at this – this is exactly how Kal started out when he first approached trees – with an expectation of instant friendship. I knew that the road was much longer and tougher to travel than many people expect when it comes to talking to trees.
We began our approach and I mentioned how “spooky” the hawthorn-lined path could be at night. Even in the day it is a little intimidating. Mike said that he felt we were being watched. I stopped and tried to sense the presence too. Oh yes! Now that I turned my 360-degree attention to the entity I could sense there was something watching our progress, and it wasn’ t the tree. Hmm…I made a mental note.
Now we rounded the final corner and opened to gate to the site. it was Mike’s first visit and he drew an appropriately large intake of air in a huge gasp of appreciation.
