Crystal Magic
I was in a situation. Sorry, I can’t go into the details but a situation had been slowly looming in the distance and threatening to arrive on my doorstep and last Monday it did. I was worried, concerned and in the dark as to what to do about this situation.
I know, sounds really cryptic, unfortunately I can’t tell you what the situation was but I do want to tell you what I did. It was Monday night and I was in bed, wide awake, as I mentioned worried, concerned and in the dark (literally). Or was I? As I looked across the bed covers I saw a white light shining in through a crack in the curtains. Curious as to what was making it, I looked out and saw a full silver moon shining opposite my window. I opened the curtains some more and lay back looking at the moons pattern on my bed.
A thought came across my mind, could I do some energy work to alleviate my situation? My procrastinating, lazy and warm bedded self answered with a “Yes, maybe, lets investigate tomorrow” I was about to turn over and let sleep take me when a thought occurred to me. “This is the time to do it” I think it was the moon shining that brought the intuitive knowledge. Reluctantly I got out of bd and grabbed the dowsing rods.
- Is there anything energetically I can do about my situation? YES
- Is now the best time to do it? YES
- Is that because of the moon? YES
- Do I need anything else to do this work? YES
- I was taken to my crystal store box (which has about 100 crystals in it)
- I was also taken to a draw that had a large candle in it.
- and I was pointed to my house plant in the corner of my room.
I lit the candle and placed it in the dowsed for place. I then began taking out crystals from the box and placing them on the floor at the foot of my bed. 1, 2, 3, 4…28, 29, 30, 31. I had taken out 31 distinct crystals and placed them on the floor by my bed. The shape of the final pattern was concentric circles but with bits missing. A bit like the pattern of the crop circle above.
I finally asked and intendedthe help of the plant into the pattern and was ready to do some intention work. I asked the rods a series of questions about what should I be intending and arrived at the odd answer of nothing. Just go to sleep and let the magic work.
Okay. I did just that. About 4 hours later and still in the dark I felt the urge to get up and clear the patter away. Which I did. Morning arrived and I had put the Crystal Magic aside as a night-time musing. I did my usual morning stuff and sat in front of my computer to do some work. Checking my email and replying to a few I looked into the junk folder. Now normally I would just clear it out without a glance, however this time an email caught my eye. I opened it and it seemed to have some relevance to my situation. The chances of success were so remote that I almost didn’t reply to the email. However, almost unconsciously, I typed out a quick reply and sent it.
I had forgotten all about it until that afternoon an email returned with an I’m interested in your situation response. I was surprised but a thought occurred to me, perhaps this was the magic happening? So I pursued this thin thread for a few days and quite literally by the following Monday. One week later, my situation had been completely resolved. Remarkable, unexpected and I would swear, magical.

More powers of the staff
In a previous post I talked about the recently discovered information concerning my staff. I had discovered that it had acquired some powers courtesy of the Elemental |Masters that I had encountered at Tinkinswood Chamber near Cardiff. After doing a tarot reading I discovered the nature of those powers. To recap those powers were:-
- Earth – the power to inscribe glyphs and symbols into the earth, and to cast circles.
- Water – the power to energise and invigorate existing energy
- Fire – the power to re-kindle energy where there is none, resurrection of energy
- Air – the power to sweep energy away, to cleanse a place of energy

- I decided that one fine evening, just before it got dark, I would use the fading light of a dry and relatively warm evening to find a place in which I could practise these powers and discover their extent, how they worked and how they might supplement any existing magickal skills I might already have as a practising druid.
To find a suitable place I dowsed for a direction and a distance. I got a north-easterly direction and somewhere within a five-mile radius. I knew what features were in that area – my local hill. I used the dowsing rods to confirm my feeling that a sandstone base was the best ground to test these powers out on. Indeed it was – a perfect mixture of crystalline texture and neutral base. I knew my local hill was at the end of a long sandstone ridge, and that somewhere on that hill would be a perfect place to test these powers out.
Did these powers that I imagined were in the staff really exist? How could they be used and called upon? How well would they work? Time to find out!
The Circle and The Spiral
My wife had a friend. She has worked with this friend a long time ago and they used to have happy times, but then her friend began to succumb to the stresses and strains of working in the mental health profession, and rapidly began to suffer from the very symptoms she was trying to cure. Friendship became strained. Honestly, her friend has never really recovered properly. and now, perhaps cruelly, her name is often accompanied by the prefix “Mad…” Everyone who knows her expects a whirlwind visit near to a full moon. Oh yes, despite what sceptics say, experience has taught me that this so-called myth is very true – people affected by the moon are prone to lunacy when the moon is full.
One night I heard a knock at the door. My wife was away and it was 8pm. I opened the door and Mad Lady walked straight in, chattering about seeing our cats, and 101 other topics within a ten-second burst. Definitely “hyper”! She is a buddhist and spotting an ornamental buddha perched on our fish tank she began to bow to it in little fast bows, hands clasped in prayer, and muttering incomprehensible mantras to herself and her deity. I calmly asked whether she would like a cup of tea, if she was staying? To my surprise she said yes, so I began to prepare the necessaries. All sorts of thoughts were going through my head. Mostly, “What am I going to do now?“. To be honest I had always let me wife take the brunt of her behaviour and had taken every excuse possible to slip away.
Sounds harsh, bur this lady has a lot of issues and she is a vortex of negative energies. She is a “taker”, but when well is equally a “giver”, so you just have to know when to catch her right. Sadly, she visits people most often when she’s in need, and in “take mode”. Tonight was clearly such an occasion, and this time there as no escape. this time I would have to deal with her on my own. The test was obvious to me. She was going around in circles with grief, stuck in a time loop, weighed down by the grief and guilt that accompanied the suicide of a former lover. She is spiritually and intellectually active but I know that very few of the people that she encounters are prepared to deal with her frantic and overpowering curiosity combined with such a strong neediness. People often are willing to help, but she is like a vortex of neediness that people get quickly depleted.
This time, however, the test was mine and mine alone. I prepared myself.
Casting a druid circle
Every so often I come around The Spiral of Life and find that I am re-joining a path that I have taken before, except that this time the path is at a higher level and offers more challenges and rewards than the previous time. That’s a rather grandiose way of saying that I have recently re-discovered an interest in casting a circle when doing natural magick out in the big wide world. What use are invisible circles, you may ask? I certainly did. I’m not one to pick up on magickal practises and mimic them for the hell of it. They better have a demonstrable purpose and prove themselves in the field before I’ll consider incorporating them into my work.
Traditionally casting a circle has been seen as a method of creating a sacred protected space within which power can be contained. It serves the dual purpose of excluding energies from outside of the circle that the magician may not wish to allow to enter the space in which he or she is working. A magic circle is different in some ways from just putting up protection around oneself in that it has the additional benefit of being “geometrically efficient” – in other words, because it is a circle, any energy released within it is contained and not diminished. I would go further and say that the practitioner should be considering the use of a sphere, rather than a circle, and containing the energy in a three-dimensional (and perhaps more) space. This bubble provides a perfect containment for subtle or magickal energies, thus increasing the efficiency of the work within the ‘circle’ and reducing energy loss or dissipation. Magickal circles offer protection without energetic interruption, they create a “sacred space” within whose bounds you can ‘clear’ the space to be free of undue or unintended influence, and thereafter protect it from re-admittance to those other energies, effectively creating a sealed hermetic space within, sanitised for your work.
Natural magick practitioners in particular should consider the use of such devices as magick circles because there are more unpredictable forces in the wilds of Nature than in the sanitised structures of modern man, and creating a safe space within which to work is more of a necessity than a nicety. Introductions over let’s go on to talk about how casting a circle is actually done.
Review of the Year 2009 – Part 7: Summary (Q&A)
Section 7. Summary of the Year
In order to organise our thoughts Kal and I came up with some questions the answers to which we hoped might summarise the way that year has gone for us – what were the bits we expected, what exceeded our expectations, and which things arose to meet us on this path that we didn’t anticipate? Here are my answers to this year’s questions.
What did I think I was going to learn?
- Whether specific periods of the year are more energetic than others, and whether those periods align to the calendrical eight-fold year.
- How stone circles work in terms of their energy
- Whether specific geology affects the energetic responses from sites
By the summer of 2009 I had already established to my satisfaction that there was a difference in the strengths of energies at the Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice. I was sure that there was more powerful sun energy (i.e. stronger male energy) at the Summer Solstice. The Spring and Autumn Equinoxes were very similar in strength, and were a balance of male and female earth energies. At the Winter Solstice the male energies were very weak, as was the Sun. The female energies fluctuated only in relation to the strength of the Moon and the input from nearby trees, again weaker in Winter.
Determining any objective means of measurement was difficult, as our own energy levels seemed to be a factor in how well we could dowse or do energy work at a site, however a scale of measurement (strength from 1-10) seemed to work for the purposes of obtaining some data that could be compared between sites. The solstice and equinox dates depended upon the quality of the Sun to determine the amount of additional energy was at the site compared to our visits to them on other dates.
The Celtic Festival dates (Lammas, Beltane, Samhain and Imbolc) in between those times were much harder to figure out. These dates seems to depend upon the position of the Moon for their effects upon ancient sites., rather than the Sun’s effect. I will be posting much more on this soon, complete with a table of the relative energy levels at various sites dowsed this year.
Further theories have emerged concerning the operation of energies at stone circles and other sites too. See the Earth Energies and Ancient Sites Summary posts for details on those.
We have kept a weather-eye on the geology of sites whilst dowsing this year. It started for me in Carnac when I discovered that the stone rows were placed along a shelf of rock quite different from the surrounding geology of the rest of the nearby coastline. We have concurred with the popular dowsing theory that geological faulting is important to the situation of ancient sites, as is often the presence of water, but we do not wholly agree with the necessity of water (or a ‘blind spring’ formation) being present at all ancient neolithic sites. Some major sites such as Stonehenge and The Rollright Stones do have this water formation, however, and we think these popular sites may have led to the popularity of the idea amongst the dowsing fraternity that such a formation is necessary to a strong energy site. We do not find this to be true.
What’s been the surprise?
- Crop circles being designed by some intelligence beyond the confines of this planet – expected them to be of human design and manufacture.
- The energetic and healing potential of running water – Pistyll Rhaeadr and Viktor Schauberger convinced me of this at different ends of the year. At Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall my wife’s twisted ankle was healed in minutes. Later I read Schauberger’s theories on the properties of water and I understood how this could have come about.
- A spiritual pilgrimage being worthwhile doing, and not some soulless religious historical trail as I had imagined it to be.
- Astrology - There is a correlation, a link, between the relative positions of the stars and a human being. My natal chart is stunningly accurate in assessing my personality traits. Kal and I have also discovered that we are energetically linked to particular planets – Kal to Mercury and myself to Venus. We are more energetically ‘loaded’ or ‘charged’, and more energy work is possible, when our respective planets are visible. I have tracked this since the beginning of the year and have each dowsing response confirms this.
- Elemental beings and cloud sylphs – I see some this year on four separate occasions and each time I was stunned by the effect – this was no mere simulacrum. Seeing faces in the clouds must be the third and conclusive qualifying factor in any signs of madness developing – that much I do appreciate, but nevertheless, they have been present at quite specific times of high energy.
The Circularity: dowsing, crop circles, and orb energies
There is a natural overlapping between the two areas of dowsing and crop circles. It is almost inevitable that dowsers would use their skills and sensitivities to try to determine the validity of claims concerning the creation of circles and to map their energy patterns.
My interest in crop circles only got awakened very recently. I was at Bryn Celli Ddu in Anglesey when I met an Australian guy who had travelled the world looking at ancient sites. He was very interested in the dowsing Kal and I were doing. When we chatted he discussed many esoteric topics but stated that I should re-consider crop circles as a phenomenon, rather than dismiss them all as a hoax.
And so the search begins for real circles.

My first stop was Michael Glickman’s book “Cornography: New Swirled Order“. I just liked the title, and the style of the book, it being a download of his blog material. Turns out he’s quite a well-know figure “in these circles” (couldn’t resist that one). I’ve been reading it avidly and can feel his passion for the subject, and his hatred of detractors. In the book he mentioned a video which purports to be a real-life early morning capture on film of white orbs flying around forming a crop circle. Glickman is positive that the video is not a hoax.
So, I go and look it up on the web. The only video I can find, Oliver’s Castle, includes the word “hoax” at the end of the title. Oh! Then you start reading the reports of the Crop Circle Connector group. They also now admit it was a hoax. Tell you what, though, it’s very well done! I was convinced on first viewing, but several things don’t stack up: a) The orbs don’t fluctuate in size with changes in distance, and b) at one point they appear semi-transparent as they fly away across the field. Hmmm. Why?
Other searches reveal a Dutch scientist who postulates the theory that, if the circles are made by orbs which dispense microwave energies onto the crops then they circles should show signs of reacting strongly to the energies near the centre, with a reduction in that effect further out. Indeed, he seems to prove that this is the case by measuring the amount of swelling in the stalks, and this seems to coincide with his theory.
One aspect that I find interesting is the number of recent circles that display aspects of Mayan design concepts, as though hinting at the Mayan Calendar with its 2012 end date. Personally, I am less convinced by circles that appear to have designs that are so human-related. However, they form beautiful patterns that may make people think about the subject at least.
Another aspect that is significant particularly to dowsers is the continuing use, and indeed progressive complication of crop circles that utilise the principles of sacred geometry in their design. Perhaps there is something fundamental about these sacred number sequences and mathematical relationships that signify something of import – I just wish I knew what! Sacred geometrical patterns and numeric relationships are abundant at sacred sites. When the concept of the Megalithic Yard is considered too, then interesting proportions emerge from the measurement of stone circles, cromlechs, standing stones and other geomantic sites. “Think fractal.”
So, the next step for Kal and I in relation to crop circles is to ensure that we are available to visit some when they start appearing in Wiltshire in the Summer of 2009. We already have a rigorous list of questions designed to reveal useful information from sites, so let’s add crop circles to the list and see whether they stack up with other earth energy areas. I draw the line at sleeping in a field waiting for the orbs though!

Glossolalia: The nemeton described
I realise that I have used the term ‘nemeton’ without giving it much of a definition. For me the nemeton of something is the energy that it projects. I have found that projection can take many shapes: a complete sphere is common, but also with trails of energy bursting out of that sphere, or perhaps it’s an ellipse shape, or some other organically smooth and bulbous shape.
It is more than shape though. It is an energetic field, a boundary of force or subtle energy that can be tuned into by adjusting and un-focusing the mind, like twisting the eye’s kaleidoscope. In this state of mind the energy can be felt, sensed, or for some, seen in the mind’s eye – that evanescent show-reel that projects misty-lensed images in your own private theatre. When overlaid on normal sight this can appear like a waking daydream, but carries an immense sense of being real.

I first encountered the word in one of Emma Restall-Orr’s books. She described it like this:-
“…it is often possible to sense the edge with fingertips or hands, feeling a slight pressure, a change in temperature or light in the air. Simply by using our mind, pure intention and openness, a blend of imagination and sensitive vision we can trace the edge, not forgetting the area to either side and behind us.” (‘Living Druidry‘, Emma Restall-Orr, Piatkus, 2004)
Emma goes on to reveal more qualities of this field’s edge, and makes it sound like the classic description I used to read as a curious boy about people’s auras. They have colour, display weaknesses, and can be interacted with opening an emotional connection, or sympathetic vibration.
I now use this term to describe these fields as I have found them around trees, and standing stones. They have different extents depending upon their purpose. Trees seem to develop a nemeton roughly spherical and in line with their size and shape, perhaps only extending a few feet beyond that. Larger trees have nemetons that can be sensed some fifty feet or more away. This is the majestic feeling we have when we walk down a long avenue of large trees – we feel their nemetons if we adopt an appreciative air. It is uplifting, certainly. Rejuvenating to our flagging soul.

Standing stones and stone circles have such a field too. Stone circles are again spherical and usually tied in size to the size of the circle of stones. Standing stones have nemetons that are usually proportionate to the power of the energies at the site, and to the size of the stones. The Bryn Gwyn stones of Anglesey, for example, emit a strong and easily detected nemeton from each of the huge stones. The edges of these elliptical nemetons can be felt without using dowsing rods. You can feel their character just by standing near to the stone for a minute in silence.
When you stop feeling the object’s presence, or attraction, then that’s the edge of it’s nemeton. Emma R-O asks that we treat this edge with respect, as we are invading something’s ‘space’, and we know how upset we get when someone comes too close, and ‘invades our space’! I guess she’s right, but often we can’t help being in something’s space – that’s the way parks and roads are made! It becomes especially important to adopt a good attitude, however, when we switch to attempting to interact with these energetic fields. Then I feel it is right to ask permission to do so.

Recent dowsing has shown me that the nemeton of a stone circle is composed of three concentric circles, and that those circles flow in two directions: the male energy flows anti-clockwise and the female flows clockwise. When the male energies are in the ascendancy (e.g. the sun is shining) then the nemeton flows anti-clockwise, but if the moon’s influence is stronger (the sun has gone down, the moon is full or close) then the flow will go clockwise.
Whichever way it is flowing in a stone circle the energy always enters the circle to spiral around inside into a single point, which is usually what we term a “power centre”, but which mainstream dowsing likes to call a “blind spring” – a point where two underground streams of water cross.
The Nemeton vs. The Aura
There is a lot of cross-over between the concepts of the nemeton and the aura of a living thing, not least that they literally overlay each other. Recently we spent some time dowsing these two fields and determined that they were categorically distinct energy fields. They may have many points in common – for example, they occupy most of the same space, and they can both be controlled in terms of their extent and their properties, yet they have differences too, some of which we are only just understanding.
One of the major differences is in the nature of the energy. In the nemeton field the energy dowsed as a different frequency to that of the aura. The aura is composed of rainbow colours that map onto the human chakra points, but the nemeton is not split into bands of different frequencies, but is instead a whole field of a single energy type.
The purpose of the nemeton is something we are only beginning to get to grips with. What we have found so far is that it seems to be related to inter-connectedness. It seems to be the field that defines the region or sphere of influence that a living entity generates. This field of inter-connectedness can be opened or closed (softened or firmed up) to permit or block a connection with other nemeton fields (of which there are many inter-lacing fields from all living entities). When a connection is made then emotion, meaning and intent can be shared between co-operative entities, such as between a human and a tree. The overlapping of the respective nemeton fields provides the connection between the two, and permits the transport of “vibes”, intuitive thought patterns and imagery.
So, I hope that’s piqued your interest in the idea of a nemeton. I am learning that becoming sensitive to these fields is immensely rewarding and fulfilling, and I hope to learn more so that I can work with them more efficiently. I would dearly like it to become second nature! Oh dear, “pun hell”!
