Imbolc: A Hedge Druid’s preparations

After spending a significant amount of time last year trying to determine the most energetic points of the year we think we have worked out what those are now. It was interesting to try to link those to the 8-fold year of the pagan calendar, for there was undoubtedly some remnant of knowledge retained in one or two of the festivals, but the majority of the dates of the 8-fold year are simply calendrical, and bear little relation to the quality of the planet’s subtle energies. The exceptions were Imbolc, Summer Solstice, Samhain and Winter Solstice. Most of the cross-quarter days were simply a marker point in the calendar, useful to human society but no indication of energetic quality.

How does this relate to the ancient sacred sites we have visited? Almost without exception the sites contained a positional system of measurement that indicated which energies they were engineered to take advantage of, utilise or enhance. Only recently have we begun to piece together the combination of factors that contributes to the bigger subtle energy picture, involving factors such as:-

  • the site’s alignment with The Moon
  • the site’s alignment with The Sun
  • the site’s alignment with specific planets
  • the type of rock used in the construction
  • the size of the stones, the site and the number of stones used
  • the underlying geology and water systems of the site
  • the living energy of nearby trees
  • the time of day
  • the time of year

As you can see there’s a lot to take account of, and producing a scientific analysis of a site’s subtle energy systems is an absurd venture – it’s much more about intuitive feel backed up by some dowsing to confirm suspicions or to disprove suggestions, all performed against a background of the unfolding inevitability of the year and the astral bodies that surround us.

Imbolc ushered in by Bride

So, this is how we are approaching the first major venture of this year: Imbolc – February 1st. It falls on a Monday this year, and happens to coincide with a full moon. How fortunate! The dowsing should be strong for the female energies, and we should begin to see the return of the male energies if the sun is out around midday. The day is dedicated to Bridget/Brige/Bride – the threefold goddess of magic, craft and fertility – a winning combination in my book! Therefore we intend to take account of this in the ritualistic elements of our energy work that day.

LAST YEAR:

We visited St Bridget’s Church in Dyserth village. This was the start of a small pilgrimage (although we weren’t calling it that back then) that took us all around the area, from the village, the waterfall, to Gop Hill, Dyserth castle, and then up to the Golden Grove (which we failed to find). Later in the year I revisited that site and found both St.Elmo’s Summer House and The Golden Grove and was overwhelmed by cows and totem animal signs.

THIS YEAR:

We will be heading out to Anglesey, to follow the Bridget trail of sites in the south-western quarter of the island. I will tell you more about how this came to be our itinerary, and what actually happened in a few weeks time.

ENERGIES:

This year Kal and I have planned out the times when we will be able to make the best use of the anticipated male and female energy high points of the year. When are they? Well, if you haven’t been following all our conclusions so far let us give you two golden rules that should allow you to work them out for yourself:

The male energies (radiant and earth) are at their strongest when The Sun is at its strongest – growing in strength over the year until reaching a peak at the Summer Solstice.

Then the radiant energy begins to fade. The strength of any specific day is dependent upon the amount of sun visible on that day, and is strongest around midday. Therefore, the ultimate peak would be midday of the Summer Solstice on a sunny day.

The female energies (reflected and earth) are at their strongest when The Moon is at its fullest and closest. Therefore, in the next year, this will actually be at the end of the year on the Winter Solstice.

If you want to find out which other days are important to those who revel in the female energy flow then I recommend you purchase the Findhorn book “In Tune With The Moon 2010“, which is a calendar that indicates not only the days of a full moon but also indicate whether the moon is at apogee or perigee, or somewhere in between (i.e. how near it is to Earth, and therefore how big it appears). You also have to take account of the fact that clouds may obscure the view, although this only diminishes the effect, it doesn’t nullify it.

Imbolc in a nutshell

RITUALS:

This year we have determined to go out on these special days with an intention. At Imbolc we will definitely make this the first of such ventures, and although I do not want to plan it too much, I think it is safe to say that there will be some incense burned, some candles lit, possibly some milk left as an offering if we are requested to do so along the way, and perhaps we will have a thought or two about the three aspects of the triple goddess as we work with the energies of the sites we visit on that day. Nothing is ever certain, but this year it is more deliberate than last year, as we have been encouraged to be so. One thing is for sure – we will both have a definite outcome that we will be working to achieve with the magical energies available to us on February 1st.

Four Types of Subtle Energy

This is a short and simple post explaining the sources of four of the types of subtle energy that can be dowsed.

  1. Male Radiant - from the radiant energies of The Sun
  2. Male Earth - from the action of primal underground water over rock
  3. Female Radiant – from the reflection of the energy from The Sun on The Moon, the Planets, and from other Stars (in descending order of strength)
  4. Female Earth - from living or dying organic material (animals and plants)

There is an additional energy, which we call “Neutral“, and we will spend more time this year uncovering the properties and qualities of this particular energy, because we feel we don’t yet know enough about it to write authoritatively or from deep experience. Stay tuned for that post coming later this year.

In subsequent posts I will also discuss the ways in which some of these energies can combine to produce subtle energies with different qualities.

Anglesey Winter Solstice – Part 1: Bryn Celli Ddu

At the Mid-Winter Solstice Kal and I ventured forth to Anglesey again. In the following set of three posts I will share with you all the encounters we had, the energies we mapped and worked with, and the discoveries on our tour of Anglesey on 21st December 2009.

1. Bryn Celli Ddu (South Anglesey)

We started at our favourite Anglesey starting point – the neolithic mound of Bryn Cell Ddu. It has all the right ingredients – it’s away from traffic but easy to get to; it’s close to the Menai Bridge; it’s beautiful; it’s aligned to the Winter Solstice. Perhaps that last point was the most important!

We missed the sunrise moment, but arrived at about 11am, in time for the midday sun. The previous day’s weather had been appalling making us wonder whether we’d be out here at all, but today the sun was out and the sky was blue, despite being very cold. Not impossible weather to dowse in if kitted out with gloves, hats and sturdy boots (well, I was anyway).

Almost the first moment we began to dowse we noticed something rather unusual – our usual alignments (myself = female, Kal = male) had been inverted! When I asked to be taken to a compatible power centre I arrived at a male power centre atop a recumbent stone at the edge of the mound. Later, when I caught up with Kal this was the very first thing he said to me: he’d been drawn to female centres and lines. We had confirmed each other’s findings, even if we didn’t understand why this was so.

Winter Solstice sun path

We set about dowsing. I had vague memories of when we had last mapped the site’s energies and was keen to see whether that had changed at all, given that this was the Winter Solstice. Oh my word, had it changed! The energy flows were significantly different from when I had dowsed here last. Either that, or we are finding more and more layers to the existing energy structures. However, when I had finished dowsing I asked if there were any more energy formations and the rods indicated that there were not, so I suspect the flows have modified, rather than us finding more and more new formations. This, of course, makes the idea of mapping the energies a moving target, as they would have to be mapped over the course of a year the get a full picture of how they change.

Energy flows

The mound was enclosed in the loving ‘hands’ of female energy, which stayed clearly outside of the ‘moat’ feature that surrounds the mound. A ‘tunnel’ of female energy was diverted into the mound’s interior along the ‘Entrance’ path and flows into the gap in the rear of the chamber. As I had found previously the female energy then hugs the walls of the passageway, and flows up and over the mouth of the passage as it emerges at the Northern end. It seems as though this ‘entrance’ is the entrance for energy, whilst the passageway is the human entrance to the structure.

Midwinter Solstice energy fields

Inside the chamber I found that the male energy was the same as the last time – it emerged from the petrified tree trunk (as proposed by Rupert Soskin, see this YouTube link for details, from the videoStanding With Stones‘), and from the recumbent stone outlying the mound, but within the moat area.

Sun in the passage at Bryn Celli Ddu

The male energy was confined to the stones within inner circle of the mound area. The male recumbent transformer stone gathered the sun’s energy and fed it to the standing stone at the back of the mound in a circular link. The standing tree stone inside the mound chamber gathered energy from somewhere inside the mound (possibly male earth energy beneath the stone) and fed it out of the back of the chamber, around the mound, and pulled it back inside to the tree stone again. No other male energy formations could be found this day.

The carved energy patterns

These energy formations were nothing like our previous experience of the mound in the summer months when energy had been evenly distributed between male and female. This shows us that our energy maps are going to change depending upon the time of year that we map them, making the maps even more dynamic than we anticipated!

Thinking and stinking

To conclude we both did a little meditation and lighting of incense. This also involved us walking around the tree stone inside the chamber. It was an attempt to connect to the specific energies of the Winter Solstice and to try to gather them up, and indeed that was what happened. Both Kal and I felt as though we had managed to infuse ourselves with the Solstice energy and that it was being stored within us, ready for our next site visit, where we hoped to understand what might happen next. We were still at the stage of “letting things occur”, but adding in a little direction ourselves by stating our purpose for using the energies.

In the next post I tell of how we ventured further along the southern edge of Anglesey to the Bryngwyn Stones, and then up to the Soar Stone in the North West, and how the energies of those places interacted with the energy we had gathered from Bryn Celli Ddu. In the final post of this series we do some valuable energy work at Lligwy Chamber, and I map the energies again.

Power centres: how to find your place of power

It occurred to me that I have often talked of power centres in my posts without ever really defining what such things are. I will now seek to put that right. In this post I will explain what I have found power centres to be, what qualities and uses they have, and explain how you can find such places of power for your own purposes.

Dinas Emrys - Aug09

One of my places of power

What are power centres?

They are places on the earth’s floor where earth energies form a specific formation. This formation is always a spiral when dowsed, but that spiral can be made up of different types of energies, and thus they are not all suitable for everyone – it depends upon your own alignment to those energies. For example, some power centres have strong male energies in them, and I find that I cannot sit on them for long without feeling uncomfortable, drained and sometimes I develop a headache too. When I dowse that place I find that it is strongly male-oriented, and I know that I am female-aligned, thus I understand that such sites are not beneficial to me on the whole (unless I need to re-balance my male energies because they are depleted in some way).

We have found that the spirals signifying power centres are two cones of spiralling energies, the central point of which is on the ground. One spiral then swirls upwards in a cone of increasing width, whilst another spreads out under the ground in a similar manner. If two energies combine to form a power centre (i.e. male and female) then the flows go in both directions at once, but still form a cone shape above and below ground. Dowsing the spiral on the ground seems to be a two-dimensional representation of the three-dimensional formation of energies.

Neutral energy may pass through a power centre but does not seem to affect the spiral formation. Where male and neutral or female and neutral energies combine at a power centre this can give rise to an enhancement of the effects possible there. Some combinations are more suitable to some people than others, for example, I detest the effects of Male and Neutral combinations, but am very happy in Female and Neutral centres.

Where all three energies are present the effects always seem to be beneficial to both Kal and I irrespective. A good combination!

Where do they occur?

Places where they can be found:

  • beneath tree canopies
  • rocky outcrops
  • at sacred sites like stone circles
  • in faerie rings of grass

In a host of other places too – these are just examples. Water can often be dowsed for running underground at such places, and they always occur at crossing points of two types of energy, the power centre being a place where the “interference pattern” of the two or three energies crossing creates the spiral formation.

Within stone circles it is commonly supposed that the bare patches of earth at the very centre are power centres. Rarely do we find this to be the case. Most often the power centres are offset from the centre.

How can I find a power centre?

Here is a quote from Carlos Castaneda’s book “The Teachings of Don Juan“, in which Don Juan – a Yacqui Indian shaman – poses Carlos his first test: to find his own power centre on the veranda of Don Juan’s house. Carlos had driven far and arrived late in the evening, and the test seemed impossible because Don Juan gave Carlos no clues as to how he should discover this power centre.

“He pointed out that I was very tired, and the proper thing to do was to find a spot on the floor where I could sit without fatigue…I waited for him to explain what he meant by “a spot”, but he made no overt attempt to elucidate the point. I thought that perhaps he meant that I should change positions, so I got up and sat closer to him. He protested my movement and clearly emphasised that a spot meant a place where a man could feel naturally happy and strong….
…I deliberately tried to feel differences between places, but I lacked the criteria for differentiation. I looked at my watch – it was 2 o’clock! I had been rolling [around, trying to find the spot on the veranda] for hours!..
..[Don Juan] laughed, saying I had not proceeded correctly, I had not been using my eyes. That was true, and yet I was very sure he had said to feel the difference. I brought that point up, but he argued that one can feel with the eyes when the eyes are not looking right into things. As far as I was concerned, he said, I had no other means to solve this problem but to use all I had – my eyes…..”

He then goes on to tell of using his peripheral vision to differentiate two places by their changing colour hues at the edge of his vision as he unfocused his eyes. One spot he felt uncomfortable upon, in fact even panicked by it at one stage, and the other was the spot he retreated to when such feelings overcame him. He fell asleep there, and in the morning Don Juan told him that he had correctly identified his “spot” – it was the one that he felt comfortable at and which was his sanctuary from fear. I suggest the other spot was a power centre that he was not aligned to.

How can you then find a power centre for yourself – do you have to roll around on the floor like Carlos Castaneda? No, here are some methods you can use:

  • intuition - often you will naturally go and sit at a power centre when you visit a site without realising it at first.
  • sensing - if you think you may have found a power centre you can check it by feeling for a slightly warmer bit of air than the surroundings, a stillness within it, or if you are sensitive to energy you may feel the energy spiralling or flowing upwards or downwards.
  • dowsing - by far the easiest and most reliable way – simply ask the rods to take you to a power centre that suits your alignment and to spiral around when you enter one.

What are the qualities of a power centre?

The following qualities will help you recognise a power centre:

  • the spot feels slightly warmer
  • the air feels ‘different’ – maybe stiller or ‘sparkling’
  • it feels protected from the elements – easy to spot on a windy day
  • a mild tingling feeling in your hands
  • it makes you briefly shiver when you enter it
  • you feel energy rising from the earth or drawn down into it
  • it makes you feel protected in an indescribable way – you feel happier there

Power centres are sometimes fed energy from stones in a circle, or are found within the energy fields of standing stones or trees, either drawing energy from them or fed by them. If you dowse the energy coming out of a tree close to a stone circle, for instance, you often find that it ends up at a power centre within the circle.

Some power centres feel like they drain energy, whilst others feel like they boost it. This seems to depend upon the direction that the spiral flows in and your relationship to that – for example, a sun-powered energy field will flow clockwise (deasil), and if you are moon-aligned then standing in such a centre puts you contrary to the flow. This makes the power centre feel draining. The contrary is also true – if you stand in a power centre that flows with your alignment you will feel the energy spiralling upwards and will usually feel ‘charged’ by this effect.

What are power centres useful for?

Power centres can be useful for:

  • regeneration - your ailments, aches and pains may improve by sitting in a power centre
  • empowerment - you may feel ‘charged up’ with energy, forget you are tired, and feel more alive
  • meditation - power centres can help you commune with Nature by providing a gateway through meditation
  • moving between worlds- the unique energy field in a power centre allows you to cross into the Otherworld more easily – the veil between the realities is thinner at such places of power.
  • communication - some power centres seem to allow you to communicate over any distance, or send and receive information from remote places or people

I have used power centres regularly whenever I want to do any natural magick or energy work. I have used them to ‘re-charge’ when feeling tired, say on a long walk in the countryside if I feel weary I will find a nearby power centre that is aligned to my energies and sit there for a few minutes. Then I can continue walking for much longer. They have a host of uses, only some of which we have so far identified. In my mind there is no doubt that such spots were identified, and possibly even created, by the design and geographical placement of ancient sacred sites on areas of geological faults and igneous rocks, as such areas seem to promote the interaction of underground water, earth energy and the natural energies from trees and rocks.

I hope I have given you sufficient information so that you can go out and find such places for yourself and experiment with them. What do you find at such places? How do they make you feel? What do you believe is possible when you are sat upon one? Do you feel ‘cocooned’ from the outside world and closer to another dimension? Answers on a postcard to the usual address.

How to be invisible: healing accident blackspots

At the end of February I went out for a walk in my local village with the intention of testing out the tracking properties of my new GPS unit (honestly, I won’t bang on about it any more – I’m sure you’ve heard enough). I wasn’t going to mention this, as it was only a test, but then something happened which turned that around and made this newsworthy. If, like me, you take a while to be convinced of the correlations between observation and theory, then you will understand how I have waited until a sufficient weight of evidence tips the balance towards one side or the other.

I have posted a long time ago (August last year, was it?) about the idea that accident blackspots and the possibility that negative energy, or black streams, run through those places, and may influence the decision-making processes of drivers. This idea has always been a bit “chicken-and-egg”. Do the black stream energies accumulate because of the accretion of strong human emotional energy? Or do humans have accidents at those points because the black stream energy does something to their judgment faculties?

Some accident blackspots have obvious problems for drivers:-

  • narrow points in the road making passing tricky
  • junctions without a clear view of traffic both ways
  • holes in the road that make drivers veer off course
  • fast sections of road with blind junctions joining them
  • slippery conditions

There are these reasons and many others as to why accidents occur at some places in particular, and the local councils are always looking at ways of trying to reduce the likelihood by re-painting road directions, putting up signs, slowing traffic down, widening sections, and many more I’m sure. Here’s a view of the Vale Royal (Cheshire) statistics for 2007:

Routes                                                                Number of people killed and injured (3 years)
A530      Middlewich to Nantwich                                                    186
A540      Cheshire/Wirral Boundary to A550                                     100
A50         Knutsford to Holmes Chapel                                             79
A530      Nantwich to A525                                                              77
A556      Davenham to A49                                                              58
A559      Cheshire/Warrington Boundary to Lostock Gralam                56
B5077   Crewe to Alsager                                                                54
A41         Christleton to Broxton                                                      52

cheshire_red_routes

Is it possible for a dowser to effect any change to these statistics? Is it possible to “heal” these sites? I think it might be. Let me explain why I think that – here’s my current working hypothesis.

  • When Kal dowsed his house recently he found some black streams, and found also that those streams are composed of two inter-mingled particles of energy at slightly different frequencies: male and neutral.
  • These energies had come together to form a dangerous combination. Dangerous in the sense that it is possibly created by and its effects enhanced by the generation of strong negative human emotion.
  • That human emotion is partially released at times of great stress, or completely released in a time of trauma.
  • The attractor, sink basin, or dwell-point for this emotion attracts such emotional energy towards and into it, and thereby increasing its potential.
  • This emotion or spirit can linger for a while before being dissipated.
  • A sort of bio-feedback loop is created that may cause other people to be more likely to be attracted by the pull of the negative energy at those places where such energy has pooled.
  • The pulling force of that negative energy may prevent the usual focus from being applied when making judgments whilst driving at places where the energy is exerting a strong influence.

In other words, the more accidents happen at a place, the more likely they will continue to happen because energy is being fed into the energy pool at particular places. Some places lend themselves to this pooling of negative energy because they are natural places where accidents are more likely. Thus the accretion of negative energy remains likely, thus accidents remain likely. Perhaps only the removal of the black streams will reduce accident rates at those spots. And my point is that it’s a far cheaper method than trying out a road layout and far less annoying than putting up more signs.

* My findings above village of black streams at places I had noted as dangerous points for cars. There were several more black streams along the road that is marked with the ‘Black stream – lane junction’ label. Each sharp bend had a black stream of energy crossing the road. I’ve stopped driving along that road now because of so many near misses with school buses and school-run parents. I had become invisible!

village_blackstreams1
‘Black stream – to house’ (BS) was where a car pulled out on me.

As though to validate my black stream findings an incident occurred recently that summed it all up for me and spurred me into action. I was coming home along the road on the right hand side of the picture above, heading towards the house next to the junction that is labelled ‘Black stream – to house’. I had my main beam lights on because the light was beginning to fade, although visibility was good and it was light enough to be able to distinguish colour clearly.

I had slowed down for the bend, doing no more than 35mph around the bend because I knew it to be a trouble spot. Visibility round the corner is the full length of a large house and it’s gardens that extend on each side for fifteen or twenty feet. As I rounded the bend I saw a Land Rover with its nose a full three or four feet out of the junction. I judged that there was enough room to go around it still, on the other side of the road, and looked at the driver to make sure they had seen me. She appeared to look right at me, but also right through me! This made me reach for the brake pedal, which was lucky because then she began to pull out in front of me. I slammed the brakes on and came to a halt only inches away from the white Land Rover as it’s side slid past me slowly. I was so shocked I didn’t even blow the horn. I just sat there amazed. She drove away, seemingly unfazed at the near collision.

The place she had pulled out of was the junction where I had identified a very strong wide black stream – the strongest in the area. Coincidence, of course.

What can we do?

Kal’s findings show that we can put female energy into the stream for a period of time to reduce the strength of the black stream to nothing. When the site is balanced the crystals should be removed and the work stopped. However. what we don’t know yet is whether the effects return.

Is it the fact that bad things happen, and strong negative human emotion gets imprinted into those places, that causes black streams to appear at those places? If so, then the presence of the streams may just be an indicator of trouble spots. If it is possible to permanently remove the black energy, then is the result of that a reduction in accidents at those places?

Surely this is worth testing, for the benefit of the whole community of road users. If the black energy affects the decision-making processes of the driver at those spots, then removing the black energy may make them more alert, less distracted, and more attentive to the threat of an accident that many accident blackspots pose. This is speculative – I simply don’t know whether energies affect drivers in that way, or whether drivers affect the energies, or if it’s both or neither. What we need is some real-world data!

So, here’s my suggested plan of action:-

  1. Identify a place where I feel that cars always have ‘close shaves’ or where I know there to have been accidents.
  2. Assess whether it will be safe to do some work at this place, and when might best do that (a full moon, as the female energies will be at their strongest, making the focus easier).
  3. Confirm by dowsing the spot whether there is a black stream (neutral + male) at that point, how strong or wide it is, and where it crosses exactly.
  4. Find out if there is a permanent source for this energy (an electricity sub-station, or overhead pylons, a quarry, for example – consult your Feng Shui references for more possibilities). If so, will need to work on deflecting the energy elsewhere, possibly then to attempt to cause it to spiral or pool at a safe place.
  5. If the source cannot be identified, or dowses as being capable of being removed, then do the following:-
    • Ask the rods to identify some crystals that could be placed at the blackspot to remove it
    • Go to the site on or near a full moon and ask the rods where I should place each crystal in order to remove the black stream

If possible I will leave the crystal formation in place and check the strength of the stream every few days to determine whether the crystals are having any effect. I’m going to use my own relative scale for measuring this rather than trying to establish an absolute scale. What’s important is the immediately local effect.

I’m not saying this is the only technique. Many paths, one destination. Take a look at the textful Isle of Avalon site for more information on what might work for you, if you want to try something like this yourself. But whatever you choose to do – let us know if it works, won’t you?
