Somebody Else’s Problem Field

Douglas Adams

A few years ago we lost that remarkable genius, Douglas Adams. Both Gwas and I have been a fan of his work for years. From the original Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy (known amongst aficionados as hhgttg, or H2G2) to the less famous, but equally recommended Dirk Gently series.

Not a month goes by when we come across a life situation that is comically mirrored in either of the above mentioned series. One such example we have purloined for the energy world was referred to in the hhgttg as The S.E.P Field.

Somebody Else’s Problem

From the book then we have…

An SEP is something we can’t see, or don’t see, or our brain doesn’t let us see, because we think that it’s somebody else’s problem…. The brain just edits it out, it’s like a blind spot. If you look at it directly you won’t see it unless you know precisely what it is. Your only hope is to catch it by surprise out of the corner of your eye.

The technology involved in making something properly invisible is so mind-bogglingly complex that 999,999,999 times out of a billion it’s simpler just to take the thing away and do without it……. The “Somebody Else’s Problem field” is much simpler, more effective, and “can be run for over a hundred years on a single torch battery.”

This is because it relies on people’s natural predisposition not to see anything they don’t want to, weren’t expecting, or can’t explain. [source]

As I said, Gwas and I have purloined this phrase to describe a rather interesting phenomena that is put out (or radiated like a field) by energetic entities. As you will have read on a few occasions Gwas and I have interacted with energetic awareness or entities that have been bad for our energy. Out in the wilds we have sometimes referred to them as Leprechaun Energy. The SEP field described herein is more to do with bad energies we have found in homes.

Often we have found these entities lingering in homes (even our own homes) and have thought to do something about them. Which (again as demonstrated) we are quite able to do. However an unusual energy that these entities put out can only be referred to as an SEP field. Basically the phenomena can be described thus…

We will find, or be told of, a bad energy in a home. We will resolve to do something about it. We might get a look in to dowse the thing but whenever we think to do something about it, a lethargy sets in or some other task will seem more important or we will just plain forget it. Only to recall hours later (or even days) that we were meant to fix something.

We have named this phenomena an SEP field, in honour of Douglas Adams, whose works continue to inspire us. Some other notes on this field are…

  • Distance seems to be a factor in that the further you are the more you can think about it.
  • It is usually something in your own home rather than someone else’s (we seem to be able to deal with entities in other people’s houses).
  • We are more able to talk about them with each other rather than think about them when we are on our own. This seems to be related to the above point in that the SEP field might only affect the home owner/resident.
  • This invisibility field is related to the strength of the entity. The stronger the entity the stronger the field.
  • Putting up protection does not seem to work in resolving the field.
  • It seems that they really do have to be caught off guard. i.e. in passing we will think of it, grab our rods and do something about it.

To say that these fields are annoying is an understatement. Because they seem to affect the owner (in this case Gwas or I) we have founded them (and I quote) “Maddening”

Dark Entities and SEP fields

Gwas here. I’d like to add my information as a supplement to Kal’s points. I agree with everything he’s said so far, but there are a few additional things I’d like to explore that have come to my attention about this problem.

The first aspect is that the phenomenon may not be linked solely to “bad”, “dark” or “ill-intentioned” energy forces. Certainly, is it much more within the nature of the deceitful spirit to want to keep its presence quiet, or force anyone’s attention away from its workings. That is defnitiely one aspect fo what’s going on here. However, I feel that all intelligent unseen entities have this capability. How it gets used may differ according to the entity’s personal character and motivations.

So, I think there is a level of assumed intelligence in operation here. That means that you are potting your wits against anything that you can detect is using an SEP field to distract your thoughts away from its work, and you may question why it would want to do that to you. Is it for your benefit, or because it wants to keep you in a particular state of iignorance and apathy?

This would be the point at which you should determine whether you are a “food source” for this entity!

Draining and complaining

Why am I so tired

One of the symptoms of being energetically drained by an intelligent entity is that the “victim” begins to complain about lethargy. As the victim’s energy field is depleted they may begin to take steps to generate mroe energy, but to no avail. They may begin to do more exercise but just feel tired. They may eat more but not be satisfied. They may do more spiritual or psychic work but find that this is not as productive or as helpful as they are used to. They may become ill more frequently. At this point you may begint o get really concerned about the effects of this force, and rightly so.

As Kal has pointed out, putting up protection is not going to stop you being drained. If you are already having your energy depleted then whatever protection you put up is likely to be at the very least weakened, and at best it may have a temporary protective effect, but it’s going to cost you energetically to maintain this protection. So what can you do? Get help! Either from someone who knows what they’re dealing with, or if you have the knowledge of how to do this yourself, then begin to take steps to deal with it. Here is my recommendation for the self-help process:-

  1. Get out of its way – go somewhere far away from it’s influence, and make sure that you haven’t taken it with you.
  2. Visit a place of power. Open yourself up to this place’s healing and re-balancing, its energising and nourishing energies, and get your energy levels back up. This may take more than one visit. You wil have to identify such a place of power yourself. You already know one, even if you think you don’t.
  3. Learn about the entity. You may need to be far from it to do this. Why not start in your place of power? Find out about it – male/female, beneficial/harmful, strength, any impressions about its intentions, was it human once/nature spirit, and so on. Knowledge will help you. Tarot cards are a good way to reveal information.
  4. Confront it when you’re at your strongest. Catch it off guard. Psychically get hold of it and act out the act of cutting the connection it has made to you. Then send it away with your strong intention and the pwoer of your will. Act this out physically if this helps, with gestures and expressions.
  5. Seal the area. Put up protection around yourself and the affected area (maybe your home) to prevent it coming back in easily.
  6. Watch for its return. Some entities are clever and persistent, and will try to get back at you if you have been a good source of energetic ‘food’. Watch for its return.

Of course, these are pathetically generalised instructions, but they may help you find your own way to deal with these things.

Other things that can help you focus are: burn incense to clear the space, use crystals (especially quartz) to focus intent and energies and offer some additional protection.

I would recommend reading about other methods by such writers as Ted Andrews, David Furlong or Judy Hall. Fore-warned is fore-armed, as they say. My main advice is – don’t ignore these things just because they want to be ignored. That’s usually a sign that you should be finding out what it is that wants you to be unaware!

Later...

Kal here again. I was pondering this some more last night when I had a thought. Perhaps the reason why our protection against such SEP fields wasn’t working was because they were already inside our threshold?

Thinking back over our experiences, I feel that the SEP field is more like a chameleon’s camouflage i.e. something innate rather than something that is intended. Just a feeling I have. Also I suspect that historically we were more able to see/sense these creatures than we are now. Hence why there were more reports of supernatural beings in the past than there are now. Perhaps this is because belief has waned?

I really like Gwas’s self-help ideas. Perhaps a how-to post is in the offing? I would point out though that the SEP field itself stops us from doing these things. Even as I write this I know that there is some energetic thing in the other room that is actively stopping me from thinking about it. Maybe I should do something about it now…just let me finish another post…

Meetings with Meteorites

I have just got back from The Big Smoke (or London to you and me). I am always in two minds about this place. Now that I am accustomed to the natural surroundings of my Cheshire home with its easy access to the countryside (I step out my front or back doors and it’s there) then I find it difficult to immerse myself in the manic frenzy that is London City. However, it is also exciting for a while, and London has all the virtues of being a cultural hotspot, so I always get to see an interesting  museum, gallery, exhibition or performance. On this occasion I was on the South Bank to see Roy Harper at the Royal Festival Hall, ten years after his last gig there. This time he is seventy. A post will be coming soon about this, but in this post I want to talk about an interesting encounter with some alien objects!

M and I took some hours off before the performance to visit the Natural History Museum. As a child I had been around this museum and was stunned and awed by the incredible exhibits – rack and rack f fossils, dinosaur skeletons, trays of rocks, all animal life stuffed and pinned in shelves and display cabinets in room after room until the eye couldn’t take any more. Now, as an adult, I wanted to go back to look at the collection of meteors that the museum held. I was interested to see how I would react now that I had developed my sensitivity to energy.

London's Natural History Museum

Most major London museums are now free, which is a saving grace. However, there have been some changes made to the museum since I was last there. It’s gone all “kiddy”. Gone are the long racks of beautifully laid out exhibits (boooooring!) and now we have “interactive” exhibits (exciiiiting). Far less of the “show” and much more of the “tell”. I hated it. I hated every second of it. I couldn’t wait to find a safe haven from all the knobs, dials and wheels, the illuminated plastic displays, the childish “learn by picture” storyboarding and the sanctimonious tone of the whole series of sordid scenes supplanting the serious collections. Oh yes, it seems to say, you WILL become an eco-friendly, planet-saving, animal-hugging, rainforest-conscious, water-wary citizen of the world. You WILL! You MUST! Or you are evil and you kill fluffy animals.

I ran for the Rocks and Minerals department. Surely they couldn’t have ruined the rocks? Luckily, they hadn’t. The rocks were still in glass display cases, lined up in rows as far as the eye could see. Wonderful! Museums ”old skool”. Not a flashing bulb or laser experience in sight. No questions to answer. No moral to absorb. Now to find the meteors that I had heard were here.

Sleep patterns and the Earth’s magnetic field

This article was found on the New Scientist web site. The concept is still being studied for better correlations and more data, but their conclusion so far is:

freakier dreams occurring on days with the least geomagnetic activity“.

The article reminded me of some work by one of the speakers at last year’s British Society of Dowsers conference, Dr. Serena Roney-Dougal. In her lecture last September she mentioned that she had also been trying to correlate GMF activity with sleep patterns, with dreaming quality and with the psychic abilities of people. Her results were almost the same as those in the New Scientist article:-

  • When the GMF is strong (or active) due to earth changes (seasons, tide, sunspots, moon phase, geology, earth’s magnetic core) then poltergeist activity and healing work is stronger.
  • When the GMF is weak (or less active) then remote viewing and telepathy is stronger.
  • At 3AM (“The Witching Hour“) our brains naturally produce more triptamines and start releasing them to induce dreaming.
  • Certain structures such as long barrows (which have a layer of organic, then inorganic substances) seem to act as shield against the effects of the GMF on “psychic” abilities.

You can read more about the conference speakers and the notes we took in THIS LINK.

The Guiding Star: a mysterious presence

I need to preface this post a little. Up until last year I didn’t believe in the whole invisible landscape of energies, ghosts, spirits, thought-forms, visualisation, magick, and especially astrology. I had no interest in physics, mathematics, history, astrology, any of the sciences really. Since I started on this journey through dowsing I have had to reluctantly grapple with almost all of these subjects in some depth since then, even though it has been a monumental struggle, and only rarely pleasurable. Nevertheless, an understanding of the nature of the energies at sacred sites, I felt, warranted a bit of effort on my part, so I have learned what I needed to, and been carried where my dowsing and questioning has taken me.

Someone who is very energetic told me recently that they had seen a presence, a white light, glinting near me. This was not the first time it had been seen (several times in late February 2009), but after having witnessed it several times they decided to mention it to me. It was at what can only be described as one of the most incongruous moments that everything stopped, the light was pointed out, and I was left to think about what had just been said in a somewhat bemused state!

I have a white light that appears behind me?” I queried. “Where behind me?” I was shown a spot about six feet behind my left shoulder and a few feet out – in my blind spot that occurs just beyond my peripheral vision. It was the kind of place that you see shadows from when you’re out at night, so I am familiar with that position (and you can read about that in my post called ‘Alone in the Dark – Part 2‘). I remarked that the distance at which this light was supposed to appear was about the extent of my nemeton field. I made very few further enquiries, vowing to pursue it further once I got home.

At home I dowsed it to find out what was going on. Here are the results of my first round of questioning:-

  1. Was this person right about there being a presence behind me? – YES
  2. Is this presence attached to me? – YES
  3. Is this presence benificent? – YES
  4. Is the presence a living entity? – YES. Not sure if that nailed down whether it was a dead spirit, so…
  5. Was it once a living human? – NO
  6. Has it always been with me throughout my life? – NO
  7. Is it with me now? – YES
  8. Can I learn to communicate with it? – YES
  9. Would communicating together benefit us both? – YES

Now I was curious. The line of questioning was beginning to go beyond its existence, or its presence, and to move towards finding out how I get in touch with it. I wanted to know a little more before I started anything off.

  1. Has this presence manifested as part of the work I am doing? – YES
  2. Is it here to help me with my work? – YES
  3. Is it a spirit similar to that described by many authors as a spirit guide? – NO
  4. Does it have a name? – Maybe (the rods slowly twitched together without much force, indicating a so-so answer, or an ambiguous question that could have many answers).
  5. Do I need to know this presence by name in order to work with it? – NO
  6. Is it ready to communicate with me? – YES

Right then. I was ready to speak to it too. I decided to write this up while I remembered the answers, and then began my meditation….but I fell asleep every time I tried to connect to it! It seemed to want to communicate tio me in a sleep state, but I had too many questions that needed answering first! Energy levels too low to connect any other way, I reverted to dowsing.

So, Round 3.  Another twenty questions:

  1. Is this presence still around me? – YES
  2. Is it in the same position on my nemeton? – NO, now due West of me, on left hand side.
  3. Is its placement relevant to communicating with it? – YES, now more difficult to do in its current position.
  4. Is the source of this white light from a specific celestial body? – YES
  5. Is it a planet – a star – a sun – a moon? – PLANET, and STAR. More recognised as a planet. Aha!
  6. Is it from a star that is only visible for me at particular times of the year? – YES
  7. Is the star Venus? – YES
  8. Is the purpose of it being around me so I can learn? love? live? – LOVE and LIVE
  9. Is there a sacred site in the UK that is dedicated to the form of this energy? – YES, lots of them. All of them? NO.
  10. Can it assist me in removing geopathic stresses? – NO
  11. Do I need to do something specific to invoke its powers? – YES
  12. Can I command this presence by voicing an intention? – NO
  13. Can I call upon this presence to help me? – NO
  14. Is this presence commanded using crystals/thoughts alone/intention/will power/harmony/co-operation/questioning/reasoning/pleading/prayer? – CRYSTALS, INTENTION, QUESTIONING, PRAYER
  15. Is it empowered by particular times of the year/month/day? – YES to all three. 8th-9th March 2009 is strongest, also between MIDNIGHT-SUNRISE, and influence is from FEBRUARY-APRIL.
  16. Is this presence protective / healing / empowering / informative / other? -  HEALING, EMPOWERING, INFORMATIVE.
  17. Does this presence have a human form? Can it take one? – NO, and NO.
  18. Can the presence be connected to by my manifestations, or by a natural source? – BOTH
  19. Is this presence linked to anyone I know who works with energy? – NO
  20. Is the position of the presence related to Venus’s position in the sky? – YES

You may notice that I quickly formulated questions relating to celestial bodies, and included stars and planets? For the last month I have been driving home from work in the early evening, looking at the shapes of the trees as they silhouetted against the deep blue evening sky. It’s only the last few weeks that I’ve noticed that all the way home, right in front of me in the sky, repeatedly drawing my attention, has been a bright star. I wonder which one that is?

Off I go to the internet to find out about Venus – who she is, where she is, when she’s in conjunction, or at her zenith….

MARCH 8th 2009: VENUS goes retrograde

From the pompously titled but nevertheless informative “The Psychic One” web site:

The Venus Retrograde (March 6, 2009-April 16, 2009)

This retrograde deserves a page on it’s own because of the powerful effects this one planet can create. I know one of your main concerns when calling me is about love, romance, friendships, and money. Well this planet effects all these subjects. When we think of a Mercury retrograde we think , schedules, transportation, computers and how we think. When Venus retrogrades it can stir up more drama then what Mercury and all the other planets combined when they go retrograde.”

Question 21. Is this presence’s power at its peak when Venus goes retrograde in motion? – YES.

Venus as seen from Berlin Feb – Mar 09

MARCH 8th 2009SATURN is in opposition (opposite side of Sun)

Saturn at Opposition - March 8th 2009

From NASA JPL site:

March 2009:
Saturn is at opposition on March 8th. It rises at sunset, transits at midnight (at its highest elevation, best time for telescopic views) and sets at sunrise. Saturn’s ring tilt opens to 2.3 degrees this month, and the planet is closest to Earth and therefore brighter.”

If there’s two things I hate it’s beetroot, coleslaw and astrology. OK, that’s three, but if you only count foodstuffs as one category I can get away with it. Seriously, I don’t do astrology, or even astronomy at that. I have one book about constellations, and it’s a small reference book for idiots like me who don’t understand these things, or refuse to look into them deeply enough. So – Venus goes retrograde on March 8th, and Saturn is in opposition. ??? Apparently, it’s a time for relationship strife, for not buying a new wardrobe or house, and Saturn is swinging by for a closer look at us. ???

Here’s another prediction from Alan Oken (cheque book open):

March 8: Mars conjunct Neptune at 24.50 Aquarius.
This is not one of my favorite aspects as it brings out the influence of the Sixth Ray very strongly. This augments astral currents and is very much an influence of the urge to martyrdom, i.e. suicide bombings and other acts of violence in the name of religion and devotion to idealistic doctrines. If this aspect is in close contact with your natal chart, take care that you do not give up your sense of personal power for the sake of yielding to someone else’s needs or demands. Addictions flourish under this contact.

March 8: Mercury also enters Pisces on this day, further diminishing rational communications. In addition, the Sun opposes Saturn at 18.23 Virgo/Pisces, an aspect that opposes authority and challenges social order.”

Believe me when I say I’m not about to get sucked into this particular black hole that is astrology/astronomy. Yes, it would appear there is some celestial significance to sacred sites, and to times of particular energy fluctuations brought about directly by the conjunctions of astral bodies. However, it’s a long and winding path to understand the heavens, and I’m not sure I need to just yet. I’m going to sit back and watch what happens around those dates, maybe dowse a bit, and report back. It seems as though there’s something specific I need to be doing. Now I need to find out what that is before March 8th.

Following the Evening Star

The Cirencestershire Conflab

Kal has already written a lengthy and laudable account of the British Society of Dowsers conference recently, but he has urged me to add my own bits to it, and so I will add those elements that are in addition to his write-up, or which display my own perspective on those events.

As we journeyed down to deepest darkest Gloucestershire we were in good spirits. I was excited, and wondering about how we might fit into a group that I expected would be primarily of retirement age, or batty as Battenburg cakes. Probably both.

On arrival we were immediately made to feel welcome, and were given our name badges and starter packs. Hmmm. At least Kal had a pen and notebook in the pack – he always takes mental notes instead of writing stuff down. Kal ditched the name badge. I played the game to see what happened. As I’m not a very social person it seemed to help during the day.

Dr. Serena Roney-Dougal – Where Science And Magic Meet:

Although the first lecture of the four we would attend that day, this was the most interesting. Dr.Serena talked about what seemed to be quite diverse subjects, and in some depth, but she managed to pull them all together into a cohesive argument for the validity of shamanic practises, as they related to the earth’s energy grid and fields.

The important information I got from this lecture was:-

  • The earth’s “GeoMagnetic Field”, or GMF, is perceived by Dr.Serena as synonymous with the Hartmann and Curry lines and grids.
  • Earth energy at ancient sacred sites is probably linked to geological features such as fissures, weak points, stress points, fractures and fissures. Water is a factor in the production of earth energies too.
  • DMT (Di-Methyl Triptamine) is in the pineal gland of the brain and directs all other systems depending upon its chemical levels.
  • Triptamines can be introduced from external sources such as the ayahuasca vine, or many other shamanic plant extracts, to induce a living dream (or lucid dream state).
  • At 3AM (“The Witching Hour”) our brains naturally produce more triptamines and start releasing them to induce dreaming.
  • Certain structures such as long barrows (which have a layer of organic, then inorganic substances) seem to act as shield against the effects of the GMF on “psychic” abilities.
  • Our sense of direction and navigational abilities are linked to the GMF (studies of pigeons).

As you can see, she pulls together brain chemistry, dream states, psychic abilities, the effects of the electromagnetic energies of the earth, and the purpose or usage of ancient sites. Quite a lecture in an hour!

I found that so many of those topics chimed with me. In addition I have always had a good sense of direction (on most occasions) and can find paths through seemingly impossible terrain, but have never linked it to the GMF activity before. Something for me to think about. I particularly liked the link between GMF activity and “psychic” abilities. I will try to be much more aware of this when attempting druidic work.

I think that the conclusion we could reach is that remote viewing and telepathy would work better from within a long barrow or chamber, whilst a stone circle may be better suited to healing and spirit activity.

Dr Tim Darvill – Stonehenge and Healing:

Dr Darvill (‘Davros’ I kept thinking) was something of a coup for the convention. His TV programme about his excavation work at Stonehenge was getting its first showing on mainstream TV that night. Dr. Darvill therefore delivered his lecture with the smooth assurance and well-rehearsed aplomb of a man who has worked through his theories and re-visited them until he felt they were as convincing as he could muster.

I must say I found it all very fascinating and I felt it turned a listed contender for the purpose of this most famous stone circle, and elevated it to an ‘almost definite’. Healing was, I am convinced now, being done at Stonehenge at some stage in its development, and Tim can practically pin-point that time. But it’s not the whole time. It’s a fragment.

Whether healing was Stonehenge’s original purpose, capability or raison-d’etre I wouldn’t like to say, as I think other competing theories are just as likely seeing as the monument went through several re-workings, and passed through thousands of years of use. Ye gods, we can barely keep one of our modern miracles of architecture for the same purpose more than a year these days!! Now it’s a bank, now it’s a cinema, now it’s a shop, now they’re all flats….Imagine trying to trace an original purpose to any modern building after even 200 years of use. The one constant we can rely on is change. The line may become twisted and broken. The evidence may be cleared out. Purpose may have to be divined as much as reasoned. And we use written records. Most of modern archaeological theory is as much creative cultural anthropology based upon fragments as it is true history backed by permanent record.

That’s not to belittle the work of Darvill and others before him. Anything that adds to the certainty of a theory is welcomed by me, and he presented his arguments assuredly and provided physical and historical evidence to back his claims. Diseased bones that could be traced to a man who came from the Alps is n interesting development. Click here to read about his recent work and theories.

A convincing answer is what Kal and I are after – not an intractable debate. There is more to Stonehenge, though, than simply a healing site, however good it was in its prime. This quote about it comes from a Guardian newspaper article:

The latest finds imply a much more complex story: they include a Roman coin among stone fragments, suggesting the Romans also believed in and sought out the healing magic. The later charcoal deposits suggest to Darvill and Wainwright annual gatherings, perhaps for feasting and ceremony at the winter solstice, continuing as late as the 17th century.

The modern-day druids and pagans who assemble bearing green boughs for the winter and summer solstices may not be so far off the mark after all.

Guardian newspaper, 23rd September

I found it interesting that the healing Blue Stones were from the Preseli Hills in Pembrokeshire (not the Presley Hills, my American friends, he didn’t own them too – and they probably can’t revive him now). Recently I had been on holiday to Pembrokeshire but had had no idea as to how many sacred sites there would be in that area. I now wish I’d gone for a fortnight instead of three days! A strong place for energies and sites, a rather uninspiring holiday destination though.

Darvill continued to raise the stakes though by saying that Stonehenge might have been a copy or replacement for a more natural circle of stones atop one of the mountains in the Preseli Hills. His candidate is Carn Menyn. From his slide presentation photos it looked a good bet. A complete circle of jagged natural ‘blue’ stones formed a gigantic cathedral that is a natural wonder.

A lunchtime interval came as a welcome opportunity to try a bit ofdowsing in the warm afternoon sunshine, the results of which Kal amusingly recounted in his post. I must say I had to laugh when I guessed that he had played a trick on the rather-too-smug lady by shrinking the boundary of her energetic aura to a few feet. It had a positive side – every time we dowsed for auras now we were able to pick them up easily. Now Kal was demonstrating his skills at manipulating them too, which is something I want to study and practise too after learning about the concept of the nemeton (see previous post).

Hamish Miller – The Southern Serpent, New Zealand and Healing The World:

I had been looking forward to Hamish’s talk, as I have read a couple of his books and had a lot of respect for the work he has put into understanding the nature of the energies he has encountered. Luckily, he didn’t so much re-capping on his near-death experience, or much about the Michel and Mary line that he had dowsed with Paul Broadhurst. Instead he started off talking about the Apollo/Athena line, a line running from Skellig Michael in southern Ireland, and which continues through many sacred sites until it reaches Armageddon in Israel.

Hamish then told us about a phenomenon that he had experienced on both lines – that when he placed a stone on a power centre at the sites along those lines the manifestation pattern would complexify as he followed the alignment ley from one site to the next. Even going back would increase the complexity.

Whenever I have manifested patterns I have invested my energy into the stones before producing the manifestation, but Hamish doesn’t believe that is necessary, in fact stated to me directly that he thought it should not be done using one’s own energy. I will have to test this out – any stone vs. one I pick and invest energy into. I will see what differences emerge. I also plan to pick three sites on an alignment to check for the compelxification of energy patterns as I travel to each in turn. I have such an alignment locally, so it should be easy to check out.

The second half of Hamish’s lecture concerned his visit in search of what he called the “Southern Serpent” in New Zealand. He talked a little about the potential that there had been an indigenous people in NZ well before the Maori people colonised the islands, which he named as the Hawaiki. This group of people may well have come from China, the Pacific Islands, and possibly even Easter Island! I believe there is little at the moment to back this up except ancestral memory, folklore and strong supposition, yet it was an endearing thought, because many of the tales of energy paths, spirit and energy flows and netherworlds all seems to have originated from this Hawaiki people’s culture.

A mother and daughter that Hamish and his wife Ba met whilst there were Maori people who were well-versed in energy work. The daughter had been taught from a small girl to appreciate the energies, venerate them, work with them, and induce energy through the use of a “magical” stone that she kept in her possession, and which had been a gift to her, presumably as some form of rite of passage with the work. During her tuition she had been taught songs to draw out the “song lines” as the Maori’s call the energy. This girl then visibly demonstrated her powers to Hamish’s assembly of friends when she placed her stone onto a sacred site’s centre and sang energy into marvellous patterns of manifested earth energy.

After the talk I questioned Hamish about some of our suppositions: did he agree that energy lines were male, female and neutral? He did, but was not sure what I meant by neutral. I think other people call them ‘null’ lines, alignments, ley lines. They are the guiding force that keeps the male and female wave patterns moving along a particular alignment between sites. But we have also seen the lines have a vital role within the sacred sites themselves in terms of linking the major stone of a stone circle, for example. Hamish stated that the polarities, he found, flipped over between sites so that male became female and vice versa, at various points along a long line.

I found this food for thought and thanked him for his input, and the lecture before Kal and I moved off towards the enticing book store that had been housed int he next building to the lecture theatre. We had one more lecture to attend, but there was some debate. Kal wanted to go and see a workshop about earth acupuncture. So did I, but that workshop was officially full, and so we had to stay where we were.

Michael Bott – Standing With Stones:

Michael was not a dowser. He was, however, amiable and amusing, so despite the fact that he had very little to offer a group of dowsers he managed to make a reasonably entertaining hour pass with some beautiful photos taken from the DVD he has produced with his mate Rupert Soskin – who he said WAS a dowser, but didn’t dowse during their epic tour of hundreds of megalithic sites across the country! O…K…..well.

There’s not much to say about this really. The images were nice, the stories vaguely amusing (in a kind of Open All Hours sort of way) but when I asked whether they had had any mystical experiences then answer was…er…no. They had been too busy filming. O….K…..well. See you then!

However, Kal and I saw Callanish in all its glory and if nothing else we learned that we really needed to go there and do some energy work – preferably close to Winter Solstice, if possible. What a place!

All in all it was a hugely enlightening experience to spend time with some seasoned dowsers, but we did wonder how often they dowsed these days – no-one seemed to be doing it – were we falling foul of some rule of etiquette?

I’d like to thank the staff of BSD who organised the event for making us feel so welcome and remaining upbeat to everyone they encountered. It made the travelling worthwhile. A special thanks to Helen Lamb for making every effort to get us there and for her helpful recommendations all through the day. That’s the kind of dedication and effort that keeps societies going.
