There are some people with whom I have a special connection. Kal is obviously one – whenever we work together or even just at the same location, something interesting, even life-changing, always happens. Another special person is my friend Mike. Mike’s psychic abilities always give a totally different slant on the work we do. Lately we have taken to clearing psychic blockages, or clearing away dark areas of energy from sites, in particular at churches. So when Mike came to visit at the beginning of December I knew that something interesting was likely to happen. And I was not disappointed.

I had been investigating a new energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres. This is often confused with Alfred Watkins’ concept of the Ley Line. Strictly speaking a ley line does not necessarily mean a neutral energy line, only a sight alignmentAlignment relates to the concept that humans have their own energy fields that are oriented or formed in a specific way such that the person is either suited better to one energy source of another. Some people have their energy fields empowered by the direct subtle energy force of The Sun, whilst others are empowered by the indirect subtle energy of The Moon.

Due to the historical associations and symbolisation of The Sun with masculinity and The Moon with femininity we designate these alignments as either being ‘male’ or ‘female’ alignments accordingly. We interchangeable refer to people as being ‘sun-aligned’ or ‘male-aligned’ and similarly with the female alignment. between notable places, whereas an energy ley is like a radial spoke in a wheel, with energy flowing outwards across the land in a straight line. It has sometimes been found that the energy ley can be diverted from its strict straight path by changes in the landscape or strong attractors that pull it away from its original course.

Energy leys may have inter-twining streams of male and female energies weaving along them, as though the energy ley is an attractor, a pathway or a conduit for the male and female energies. that I believe exists between The Wirral and Derbyshire. Due to the location of the ley and the types of sites that it goes through I have been provisionally calling the line The Royal Line. When I come to reveal it in due course then this will all make sense. This weekend in December was my first outing along the line to determine whether it really existed at the locations that I had theorised that it would. My first stop was a nearby village with its St.John the Evangelist church. Such churches are a common recurring theme along this ley.

St John's Church, Kingsley, Cheshire

Mike and I spent a short while on the car park side of the church noticing a “dark patch” emanating from the corner of the car park. We decided to come back to that later. I wanted to find the ley lineThe term used by many British dowsers to describe an energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres. It is easily confused with ley and therefore its use is not recommended by dowsers., if it existed, and the investigate the church’s exterior. I was drawn to a white birch tree with peeling paper bark, the like of which I had rarely seen. It was an outstandingly beautiful contrast to the leaden grey skies all around us, and we admired its beauty before I began to dowse for the ley. Within minutes I had located it. It was easy to find – it ran the entire length of the church and the width of the church was the width of the energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres. The ley was balanced at this point and needed no work doing to it to harmonise it. Great. Time to move on.

Near Miss Black Spots

As we peered into the road from the churchyard I pointed out a specific spot in the road where I had seen several cars have near misses, and which always made me feel uncomfortable when I drove over it. Mike noticed that there was some red tarmac at that point – an indicator that the local council also thought that this was a place to drive cautiously. In fact, there was a solar-powered “30″ sign there too which flashes at anyone doing in excess of this speed, despite the fact that they are at the lower end of a long downhill stretch, making 30mph pretty difficult to attain.

Mike said that he felt that the line of holly bushes that marked the end of the church’s boundary, and which coincided with the accident blackspot, was hiding a flow of negative energies. We tracked back into the grounds and found that the negative energy was being emitted from a house on the other side of the holly barrier. Hmmm…someone in that house was giving out bad vibes, and this was being drawn along the hedge and into the point in the road where the near misses were happening. Interesting! I was about to dowse some more when Mike began to get psychic impressions about the person in the house. Then suddenly I was getting them too! I knew things about this person – felt how they felt, knew things about their life – it was all very strange to suddenly begin to describe this as though the person themselves were speaking this out loud. Between us we diagnosed the situation. I won’t divulge any more, except to say that the saving grace was that someone else was counteracting the negativity with some positive energies, and this was leaving the energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres. This is often confused with Alfred Watkins’ concept of the Ley Line. Energy leys may have inter-twining streams of male and female energies weaving along them, as though the energy ley is an attractor, a pathway or a conduit for the male and female energies. in a balanced state. Yet, the negativity was still feeding into the road and its vulnerable black spot. We decided to take a different tack and see if there was anything we could do on the other side of the road.

The Other Graveyard

I had driven past St.John’s Church many times, and given the positioning of the building itself the graveyard was very small and limited. Hence, someone had decided that in order to accommodate the newer graves a cemetery needed to be built on the opposite side of the road. I asked Mike if he wanted to go and take a look at this graveyard. His response was, “Do we have to? He wasn’t joking either. I insisted we did. I had walked up into the graveyard the previous day when I was doing a reconnaissance of the area and what was there. Yesterday I had only managed to get half way into the graveyard before I felt I was literally pushed to a standstill by some opposing force. Today, with Mike in tow, I really wanted to find out what was causing this strange phenomenon. I had told Mike nothing about this, however, because I never want to skew his intuitive findings. I thought it was significant that he was at the least hesitant, and even openly discouraging from entering. He seemed to be sensing some opposing dark force in the area to which we now headed.

We entered past the japanned wrought iron gates and began the short walk up to the cemetery. As a regular hill-walker I know how my body feels when it tackles a steep incline. The path up to the graves was short and only vaguely steep. I would call it a very manageable incline for an able-bodied fit person. It should have been barely noticeable. Instead, both Mike and I felt like we were fighting against a torrent or current of opposing energy that was washing down in a tirade against us as we walked up the small hill. I could see Mike hunched over and pushing hard with his legs to propel himself forward. The wind was behind us too, yet still we pushed hard to move forwards. After fifteen paces we stopped for breath and to assess our feelings. We clearly both felt the same opposing force. Our hackles were raised. We knew there was something that needed to be investigated in this area, that was for sure. But where was it coming from?

We put up our respective protective bubbles to shield ourselves from whatever was sending these waves of nauseating bad energy. Immediately we felt better, yet the pressure of the force was still very much evident – the shielding had merely reduced the nausea and overwhelming sickness that came with the energy, making it feel bearable at least. Looking around I put my “pigeon senses” on.

PIGEON SENSE: This is a kind of direction detection sense that allows me to feel for a ‘thickness’, or a difference in pressure on my temples. As I move my head around I can feel the point at which the pressure is greatest and so I know where the source of the pressure is coming from. Then I simply follow that feeling until I get to the source. Try it yourself - it’s easy! All you need to do is let yourself go into a dowsing state of mind – relaxed, intuitive, no thoughts, and asking to feel the sensation of pressure around your head. It works for me!

I could identify that the source was ahead and somewhere in the middle of the graveyard. Mike interrupted my silent sensing at that point – “I’m getting a feeling that it’s somewhere in the middle there” and pointing exactly where I was sensing the source. Good – we agreed. We girded our loins and pressed onwards towards trouble.

Sensing the source

Finding the source of the unpleasant energies was not really too hard as we got nearer. Imagine wading towards a water spout – you just walk towards the point of the highest force and pressure and when it’s almost overwhelming then you’re at the source. We moved towards an old grave with worn markings that couldn’t be read. As we got within touching distance of it neither of us could go any closer. Really – it was such a physical phenomenon that we were both prevented from actually touching the gravestone itself by the sheer force of the nauseating wave of repulsion!

Having identified the source we now wanted to know more about it. Re-doubling our protection we agreed to let ourselves open up to whatever psychic impressions we might be able to obtain about the reason for the strong dark force here. We both felt it was linked to something human. Mike had a feeling that the spirit of this person was attached to this grave in a way he had not encountered before.

As I stood lapping in the tide of revulsion, part of my brain was able to begin to sift and divide these feelings into separate frequencies. Suddenly I knew what the reason for this tidal wave of anger and horror was caused by. This person had been buried alive! It was definitely a man, and I was seeing images of his pallid and gaunt body. He had been very ill, possibly with few signs of life and hope left, yet he had not been dead when he was placed in the coffin. We took a moment to realise the horror of the situation, and the energies began to make sense. In a way, just to realise this, to have this empathic understanding of the situation seemed to cause the energies to ease off a little.

Buried alive - an outburst of anger and horror

With this understanding came a responsibility to try to cleanse this place of the dark energy that pervaded it. It was up to us to try to neutralise this dissonant force, to harmonize this anger and horror – to placate the spirit of this man’s pent up emotions that had been flash-fried into the land like an energetic atom bomb of negative feeling. I put up crystal protection and got ready. Almost before I had prepared myself Mike walked to the grave and embraced the energy calling upon his spirit guides to assist with the release. I called upon mine too, quickly! I fed energy into him to ground him, to centre him and keep a continuous flow of positive energies going through him. I called upon my Spirit Guides to lend their craft and power to the occasion, as I felt this was going to need everything we had to deal with it.

A few moments later I saw Mike raise his hands, palms up, and two orbs of light appeared to hover above his hands. The orbs lifted the darkness out of Mike, drawing the negativity out of him as though lifting a dark shroud from him, and then the two orbs of light ascended skywards, taking the negativity upwards until they melded with the background greyness of the sky. At that exact moment Mike lifted his hands fully outwards into a cross shape and opened his eyes, smiling at last! He was feeling what I was seeing. And it was incredible!

The tension in the air dissipated almost at once. The need for the protective crystal formation around me became redundant and the overwhelming throb of the dark energy was gone! It still felt like there was energy that lingered like a damp patch after a sharp summer shower – you felt that it would only be minutes before it evaporated completely to nothing. I lit incense to dissipate that remainder of energy, and the air became fresh, scented, and calm. Even the wind seemed to still for a few moments in recognition of the change. I thanked my guides for their help, and for making the process such a wonderful experience. I felt genuinely pleased at this invisible act we had performed – all of us.

An Angel on my shoulder

Over the years I have had to adopt many unusual concepts based on my encounters with energy forms. Never in my years of experience had I yet to encounter any divine being that might be called an angel. It was one term that I swerved widely to avoid. Let me tell you why. We are small beings, you and I. In my opinion, if there existed such a being as an angel then I would assume that they are far from plentiful. I would also consider that they are likely to reserve their appearances for the most divine and revelatory of experiences. I would also say that I am hardly innocent, pure or unblemished as to attract or want their attentions. So, it was with a somewhat eyebrow-raised facial expression that I turned to face Mike when I heard him say to me: “I can see an angel at the back of the churchyard, and its blessing some graves there.” Hmm…I thought. Here we go – what’s all this about? I thought he knew I didn’t “do” Angel? It must be something that Mike has attracted. I’ll see where this goes.

A beautiful birch tree at Kingsley

I was somewhat curious to know what being in the presence of such a being might feel like, so I suggested we go over and see where this being might be exactly. With my dowsing rods at the ready I asked whether there was any angelic being within the confines of this churchyard. To my absolute shock the rods forcefully pulled into the “Yes” position. Oh no! What was going to happen now? This is one of the last items on my “Loony BinA collection of concepts that we initially designated as unworthy of further investigation, for example "ghosts". However, as time has gone on and experience has grown we have had to "unpack" these concepts and remove them from the metaphorical bin.”. I wasn’t prepared to take this concept out and have to adopt it!

I asked the rods to take me to the exact site of where the angelic being was now. They swung around to lead me towards the rear of the graveyard where the newer fresher graves were marked by shiny headstones, fresh flowers and clear gold lettering. On the way I sneakily threw in an extra question – were the yew trees in this graveyard managing to ground all the spirit energies that had not managed to free themselves at the point of death? “Yes” came the response. I should have asked that before we had grounded the dark energy we had discovered.

As we walked past the line of tall yew shrubs that lined the path on one side a small white light streaked out of the corner of my vision into the yew bush next to us. Mike saw it too and we initially identified it as a very fast light-coloured bird – maybe a small pigeon or dove. I put my head into the bush and looked for the bird. There was nothing there! Weird. No sound of any bird, no sight of one. Yet we both confirmed that we had seen a white light streak past us in our peripheral vision and into the bush. Odd. Maybe it was one of the orbs that Mike had used to ground the energy, I joked to myself. We carried on, reaching the back of the cemetery.

I looked at the line of new graves. As I stood there I felt … unusual. Comfortably unusual. Like I wanted to cry. As though I was happy, and full of pride, and….. odd. I turned to Mike for an explanation. He looked me straight in the eyes and said he saw and felt the angel thanking us for our work. I felt a divine angelic being all around me and wanted to weep with joy, it was so exhilarating. Mike said the angel was holding its hands over my shoulders. That was exactly where I was feeling this unusual sensation from – it was like the hands of a guru or father, someone who you really respected, were on my shoulders and filling me with pride and self-worth. I knew what this meant to me symbolically, and I accepted it.

There was more. A message. Mike said that whatever had changed by the angel’s healing touch would be something I would use next year in my spiritual work. Sounds good! Certainly felt good. We’ll see what that means next year. Remember this – I will.

We returned to the car park and simultaneously identified the tree in the corner as being responsible for the bad energy feeling in that area. As this was my “department” I went over and created a vortex sink for the bad energy to drain into, and gave the tree some love through my hands. I drained its hateful angry feelings and the whole area felt better. I called upon the surrounding trees and animals to help the tree to recover its good energy pattern in the coming weeks and months. This work felt like the culmination of many months of learning about healing – all brought together in a simple act of cleansing and re-balancing. Mike said he saw the tree thanking me. I stepped out of its nemeton – it’s aura – and felt the ‘dirt’ of its anger and bitterness clinging to me like stale sweat. I needed to get rid of this somehow.

I looked around and saw the angelic appearance of the white birch tree – standing alone and virtuous in the full flow of the energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres. This is often confused with Alfred Watkins’ concept of the Ley Line. This was where I could cleanse myself – in the birch tree’s aura and the ley’s flow. I went back to the white birch tree and let all of the impurities wash away from me and be grounded, drawn down into the earth and dissipated by the beautiful birch’s angelic glow. Two angels in one day? I might even become a believer at this rate!

All in all a fascinating and powerful experience that will live with me for a long time.

On a day that only a mother could love I dragged my long-suffering spouse into the farthest reaches of our lands to the western shores of Pembrokeshire. Why would I do such a thing to a nice lady? Well, I had taken the day off to celebrate Samhain, and it was part of my year’s quest that I should resolve the link between Berth and Death. That’s The Berth – a Shropshire hillfort – and Arthur’s Grave, the final destination for a mythical character and a hedge druid. If you haven’t read the beginning of this story, then may I refer you to this post? I feel compelled to do so.

So, the story was that “The Death of Scorpio”, or the coincidence of the constellation appearing at the point of the western sunset along the south-western axis that joined The Berth to Arthur’s Grave was the reason I was making a four hour drive along slippery autumnal-bedecked roads to hike into the back of beyond. As I journeyed that day I was continuously recognising places that Kal and I had passed on our journey to the same location earlier in the year at Spring Equinox. On that occasion I had come to Beddarthur (Arthur’s Grave) as the final part of a quest to use the energies of three stars to unlock an inactive part of my DNA sequence, and potentially unlock some hidden healing powers. At the time I had no idea what I had done. During the year I discovered that I had acquired an ability to draw energy from plants to use to negate the dark and twisted energies left behind by some humans upon death, and I had also unleashed a guiding spirit of a knight who had been enlisted to assist me with such work.

All that seemed far away and certainly locked deep in the back of my mind as I wrestled with the increasingly powerful and playful winds that rose to meet us as we crested the hills from which Stonehenge’s powerful healing stones had been hewn. Today my mind was focused on the mundane matter of the rip in my hiking boots that were making one foot wet and squelchy.

View across Arthur's Grave to site of the Bluestones

I only have to go somewhere once for its navigable points to become embedded in my mind. Without map or compass I navigated us over the hill and straight to the distinctive outcrop of rock in whose shadow the Beddarthur DNA chamber nestled. M assured me that it was impossible to dowse in such strong winds. I demonstrated that although it could be a tad inconvenient at times to have your rods thrust aside from their designated course, they soon swung back into place given the merest lull in the gale. She shrugged at my persistence, as though not understanding my stubbornness. It must have looked odd, I suppose. Nevertheless, the rods were giving me valuable information. I was in the right place. I should enter from the bottom of the structure. I needed to visit a small pool of water at the base of one of the stones first. And that I should sit at the head of the chamber when I was prepared and cleansed of the unclean ‘worldly’ energies I had brought with me.

Before I began my meditation work I wanted to do one last dowsing test. Was there an energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres. This is often confused with Alfred Watkins’ concept of the Ley Line. I moved from one end of the stones to the other in search of it. Just as I was about to give up the rods crossed close to the ‘entrance’ of the chamber. The rods splayed out in the usual barrier response and indicated that the line passed through the entrance at an angle that was 45 degrees to the main axis. I knew the main axis was oriented North-South, so that meant that the energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres. Exactly where I would have expected the line to be oriented if it had come from The Berth. I dowsed for an answer – was this the same line that could be found at The Berth? YES. OK – now I was on to something.

I looked around and saw that if I followed the energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres.
The Culmination of Healing

I stood at the entrance point that I had identified already. Asking the Spirit of Place whether it was alright for me to enter I felt a slight tug and fell forwards. I think it was alright. I began to walk in and out of the stones until I reached the stone with the water at its base. The dowsing rods had circled this particular stone three times, so I repeated the same number of perambulations, then knelt before the stone and began to draw the pure mountain water across my face in slow, wide streaks until I was drawing a cross from temple to temple and from forehead to chin. This felt good. It felt energising, and a bit naughty, as though I was re-appropriating the symbol from its current use and back to a time when it was a symbol of the cycles of the year’s seasons.

I moved on to the central point where my power centreA place where a person of a particular alignmentAlignment relates to the concept that humans have their own energy fields that are oriented or formed in a specific way such that the person is either suited better to one energy source of another. The place is an energetic centre where a particularly beneficial combination and formation of energies is formed into a pattern that is harmonic with the person for whom it can be called a power centre. was located. Here I sat until my seat got soaked and then I decided I would be better standing. Hey – sometimes I’m as stupid as the next person, you know? As I stood in the damp grass circle at the head of the chamber I began to use my vocal technique to open up the five chakras that I now work with. I could instantly feel my energy body opening up and reaching out to touch the auric field of the site itself. Each chakra point on my body felt connected to some part of the site. It was like I was linked into the site’s energies, plugged in and powered up.

I could visualise the threads of energy coming out from my energy centre in my solar plexus. As the threads unfurled they reached out to various stones in the site’s circumference, and I felt the DNA chamber activate again like last time. On this occasion, though, the threads were creating arcing beams like a Tudor ceiling, or the inside of a wooden church, threading themselves between the stones in arcing energies that came through me as a focal point. Soon the threads were pulsing with energy and light, fluorescing with colours and flowing with pulses of energy as they throbbed and flowed around this amazing invisible structure that only existed in my otherworldly consciousness.

A cleansing puddle at Arthur's Grave

Looking back at the process I went through on my last visit several months before I realise that I went through pretty much the exact same procedure! Then I had opened my chakras using tone variations in my vocals, and I had walked a ritual path between the stones, then visualised the energy strands flowing between those points.

As I retracted the energy threads, re-bundling them into my energetic centre, I knew that my work was done here. No dowsing was necessary. M had been standing within the structure too and she looked relaxed, peaceful and was smiling brightly despite the howling gale ‘outside’ the structure. In here, in this rib cage of Arthur, we seemed protected from the roughness and the rawness of the outside world. We both walked out of the structure together and suddenly the cold biting wind ripped mercilessly at our coats and hats. That in itself was a strange experience, to be impossibly cocooned by several low-lying stones in a vaguely oval shape.

I had completed my tasks related to healing for this year. This was the death of that particular learning process for this year. Next, at Pentre Ifan, I would find out what I needed to do with all that I had learned so far.

Even though Kal and I had gone to Lud’s Church for Lughnasagh (Lammas) I wanted to do something of my own, so I took some time off work to go on a little outing of my own. The dowsing rods had indicated that the best place to visit would be Anglesey, and so I sought out some sites that were of interest to me given the moon’s phase, the nature of the festival day, and my preference for wanting to know more about standing stones.

Thus, I chose to visit three sites along the A5025 which courses through Anglesey’s eastern side. I have seen many of the sites along the coastal regions all around the island of the Druids, but this road was a little further inland, so it was new territory for me. The weather was cloudy with occasional showers, but I was not going to be put off. I had work to do!

1. Ty Gwyn standing stone (Megalithic)

Standing on a small hill above a number of car salesrooms this standing stone is easy to find, and relatively easy to access (if you don’t mind hopping over gates). The stone stands proudly on the crest of the hill and the hill provides stunning views of other hills around, and across the Menai Straits to Snowdonia. The stone is shaped in the classic fashion – a wide flattened shape with one relatively pointed edge and the other side a more rounded edge.

Upon dowsing I found that there was male energy emerging from the pointed flat edge of the stone, and directed due eastwards towards the next standing stone at Llandegfan called Pen-Y-Maen. I put down the dowsing rods and stood in the flow of this male energy. With my hand I could feel the strong stream of subtle energyA form of energy that has so far eluded scientific definition. It is neither electric, magenetic, nor electro-magnetic, so far as our current technical equipment can measure. It does, however, exhibit many of the characteristics of magnetism and electricity in terms of its effects and properties. It may be a form of either or both of those energies that we have not yet identified. flowing out of this sharp edge. Male energy and I are not very compatible so it was only a few moments of standing in this flow of energy before my head began to tighten, which is the prelude to me getting a headache. I stepped out of the flow and the tightening eased off immediately.

Llandegfan energy ley line

I found that the male energy was emerging from the geology beneath the stone. The stone had been positioned on this point because it was a natural weak point where male earth energy emerged. It was also the point where this weakness intersected a neutral ley lineThe term used by many British dowsers to describe an energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres.

Energy leys may have inter-twining streams of male and female energies weaving along them, as though the energy ley is an attractor, a pathway or a conduit for the male and female energies.. It is easily confused with ley and therefore its use is not recommended by dowsers.. Putting a stone of this shape at this point, broadside on to the neutral ley, meant that the male earth energy would rise into the stone and be directed to the narrowest point of the stone. This point was angled towards where the male energy was intended to go.

I don’t yet know why this male energy is important in the wider sense, except that male clockwise-spiralling energy has the properties of invigoration and motivation. On a map, if the line is extended eastwards it joins with hut circles and settlements on the North Wales coast at Llanfairfechan and atop the Penmaenmawr hills. Continued further it ends up at St.Asaph. Interesting, but inconclusive of any kind of theory about the usefulness or purpose of this male energy at the moment.

The Ty-Gwyn standing stone overlooks car showrooms

The next unusual finding was related to a patch of flattened grass. There were cows in the field so it was a fairly safe assumption that the cows were responsible for the flattened patch that was concentrated neatly around the sharp point of the stone. It would seem, then, that the female cattle were quite content, nay preferred, to deposit themselves for periods of time at the place where the male energy was emerging from this stone. Obviously, this would not have provided them any shelter at all! So, it may be an indicator that cows like male earth energy?

Cows seem to enjoy the energy output from this stone

2. Llanddyfnan standing stone (Megalithic) [Map]

A few miles further down the road from the previous stone was the much-easier-to-spot stone of Llanddyfnan. In fact, if you’re driving from Pentraeth to Talwryn (a common route for everyone, surely?) then you can’t really miss the stone. It is in a field right next to the road and next to a farm. With it being early in the morning I didn’t want to disturb the farmer with my request to visit, so I simply hopped over for a quick peek and a quick dowse. The only curious onlookers were the herd of bulls in the field adjacent, who again showed an amazing level of interest in what I was doing. Cattle and dowsing!

When I dowsed I found many of the same properties as the previous stone:-

Male energy emerging from the “cutting’ edge of the flat stone

Stone positioned to be broadside on to a ley lineThe term used by many British dowsers to describe an energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres.
So, some corroborative evidence concerning the nature of standing stones and their orientation. It seems that stones are either chosen for their angular qualities, or were shaped accordingly so that there was one thinner edge and a broad side to the stone. The purpose of this seems to have been to mutate, or harness the existing earth energies by placing the stone on a spot of weak geology where earth energies are being emitted from under the ground. The spot was also chosen because it coincides with the path of a neutral energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres.
That being established, I moved on to deal with a more druidic aspect of my work – to seek knowledge through meditation at a sacred site. I chose a dolmen near to a place called Benllech further down the A5025. I will tell you about this episode next time.

Earlier in the month I was asked to go on a training course with work. The course was down near London, so this meant that I would have to travel for several hours to get there, yet I didn’t have to arrive until 1:30pm. By my quick reckoning if I started my journey early enough I would be able to go visit a megalithic site on the way to the course – bonus! Which one, though? Given my route there was only one that I wanted to consider – the Rollright Stones in Oxfordshire.

As I neared the site a thought struck me – I didn’t have a purpose to go with! I racked my brains – then I remembered my liaison with a water spirit in Cumbria and how I had made a connection with this element quite strongly. I felt like I had not made the same connection with the other three elements yet. Perhaps this site was the place to do that? It was a sunny day (fire), the stones were buried in the earth, and there was a slight breeze (air)….I would have to see whether it would work when I arrived.

View of the Rollright Circle

I was practically alone in the circle except for the occasional visiting party of one, two or three people, but as is usually the case they only stayed for the merest time. I barely had long enough to register most of the people who visited, so brief was their stay! I would love to survey people about why they visit these places and then do nothing when they get there!

Ritual for three elements

When I started druidry I wasn’t “into” ritual. I didn’t see that it was necessary, but I was being too narrow-minded. What isn’t necessary is a prescriptive ritual. You know the type of thing – in “The Heathen’s Book if Rituals”, page 24, it says that if you want to summon a fire elemental you will need a red candle, to face south, hold a crystal of Tiger’s Eye in your left hand, then say the words, “O Element of Fire, come to me in my hour of need….” blah blah. Whose ritual is that? Is it YOURS? Certainly not. It’s somebody else’s. So I follow a path whereby the ritual is completely impromptu. If I have certain things with me at the time then I might use them, such as candles, incense or crystals. Even my staff can be involved. But none of these things are necessary, and so I could just as easily face in a particular direction and simply imagine a connection with some elemental force and that will work just as well. In our world it can take a strong mind to ignore the “teachings” of other spellworkers and vote for your own method because we are so often seeking to know the “right ” thing to do. The right thing to do is do what feels right!

Now to discuss the ritual part of the visit.

1. Cleansing

Firstly I cleansed myself of all the worldly energies that I may have brought with me to the circle. I felt for the position of and then stood in a power centreA place where a person of a particular alignmentAlignment relates to the concept that humans have their own energy fields that are oriented or formed in a specific way such that the person is either suited better to one energy source of another. The place is an energetic centre where a particularly beneficial combination and formation of energies is formed into a pattern that is harmonic with the person for whom it can be called a power centre. just outside the aura of the circle’s stones, and it felt like the right place because I could feel me surrounding energies being drawn into the earth and dispersed elsewhere. Note: I didn’t deplete my inner energies – just my outer ones. Also note, no dowsing rods required to find the power centreA place where a person of a particular alignmentAlignment relates to the concept that humans have their own energy fields that are oriented or formed in a specific way such that the person is either suited better to one energy source of another. The place is an energetic centre where a particularly beneficial combination and formation of energies is formed into a pattern that is harmonic with the person for whom it can be called a power centre. this day. Progress!

2. Introducing

I was then invited to enter by “my” entrance to the south-east. Invited in the sense that I introduce myself to the circle,. stated my intentions, and then waited for a response. Politeness and respect usually works well in these co-operative mystical arts. I then walked around intuiting the path through the stones and touching most of the stones as I brushes past them until I felt I should stop. The place I felt I should stop at was “my” stone in the eastern edge, opposite the tree with all the clooties. I had stopped here on previous visits too. That’s how I came to call it “my” stone today. Once may be random, twice may be a coincidence, but every time becomes something special, so now this is now the spot for me.

My place in the Rollright Circle

3. Setting

Next I created the right setting for myself. Three incense sticks would be required today (this has recently been upgraded from the usual two due to a third strand of energy being introduced into my connection meditation (I imagine three strands of energy – a male, a female and a neutral strand. The male and female intertwine around the neutral). It was also coincidental that this matches one stick for each of the elements that I wanted to work with, but I didn’t feel that was particularly relevant today.

I then took out the three elemental crystals that I wanted to use to act as a connection to the elements. Rose quartz for Air, Green Aventurine for Earth and Black Tourmaline for Fire. These are just the crystals that I find work for me.

4. Calling

I held all of the crystals in my “giving” hand. There is a concept that we each have a giving and a receiving hand. Supposedly you can feel this if you hold your hands six inches apart from each other and feel for which way the energy is flowing. It will be flowing from your giving hand to your receiving hand. With the crystals in my giving hand I connected to the circle, to the sun, moon and earth, and then opened up my chakras using the sonic method I had learned recently.

When all my energy was ready I began to give it out through the crystals into the earth. I let my energy tentacles go deep into the earth in search of a familiar earth spirit that I had worked with before. Moments later as I called its name repeatedly I felt it surge into the green crystal, and then I swapped that crystal into my receiving hand. The crystal was incredibly warm! I repeated this process for the other two elements, sending my energy tendrils out to touch each of the elements in turn and calling for my elemental connection.

When I called for the earth element I was very aware of the smell and feel of the earth beneath me. I was sitting with my back to one of the stones in the circle, so I was closer than normal to the earth, but still I could really smell the scent of the grass and earth below me for a fleeting moment as the element re-joined with me. When I called upon the air element the still air whipped up into a swift and strong breeze for a few seconds before dying away to stillness again. Coincidence? Some things are, some aren’t. When I called upon the fire element the sun was behind a large cloud. Seconds later it has broken through to shine strongly upon me. As soon as the element was back with me the sun faded behind a cloud again. Another coincidence. This magickal work is full of coincidences.

The southern entrance for sun people

5. Leaving

Soon I had a hand full of really hot crystals and a satisfied grin on my face. They were back with me, and I could start working with them again this year. I thanked the spirit of the circle for facilitating the meeting and went to stand in my inner circle power centreA place where a person of a particular alignmentAlignment relates to the concept that humans have their own energy fields that are oriented or formed in a specific way such that the person is either suited better to one energy source of another. The place is an energetic centre where a particularly beneficial combination and formation of energies is formed into a pattern that is harmonic with the person for whom it can be called a power centre. in order to be re-energised for the day ahead. Again, no rods were needed to guide me to this – I went intuitively.

As I walked out of the circle the air went colder. Much colder. I walked out from the southern entrance (the sun entrance) and disconnected myself form the circle with a sweep of my hand. This was all it took now – a nonchalant well-practised sweep that woudl cut my energetic ties. The sun was no longer visible and I felt energised, but in a strange way bereft. I think I would have liked to stay within the circle’s magickal field a while longer, but time was pressing and I wanted to do some dowsing work.

Finding the Belinus Line

As I left the circle of stones it occurred to me that Gary Biltcliffe had mentioned in his lecture on the Belinus Line that it travelled through the Rollrights area. Well, if so I ought to be able to pick it up and see where it went exactly, thereby verifying the information for myself. I got my dowsing rods out and asked whether there was a line known as the Belinus Line flowing close to where I was. This is a complex question, but luckily the rods sorted it out for me by responding with a positive, so I changed the question to be, “Please take me to the boundary edge of this line”. Within a minute I was wandering through the gate and across the road towards the field that housed The Knight’s Stone – so-called because of its resemblance to a knight piece in a game of chess, I suppose.

As I walked into the field I saw the stone with its iron cage and sighed a little. Such a shame that its aura is bound by this iron prison. I followed the female part of the Belinus Line up the right hand side of the path leading to the stone and it veered off away from the path as it approached the stone to then be pulled right into it from the hedge side (south?). I then re-traced my steps back to the entrance gate at the road and followed the male line, which was more aligned to the path than the female line. As it approached the stone the male line moved into line so that it went through the stone according to the narrowest angle (approximately East-West). The stone was a crossing point for the lines.

From the stone the lines went out to the small mound which is just beyond the Knight Stone, and then they swerved off into the corner of the field and away over the hedges and fields beyond.

Energy ley runs along the alignment of the thinnest angle

The movements and placements of these energy lines were exactly as Gary Biltcliffe said they were. If this was the Belinus Line then he had his findings spot on. At that moment I felt the cold of the sun being behind a cloud and shivered. I checked the time. I had just enough time to grab some lunch and make it to London. Still, it had been a worthwhile visit. I had proven to myself that the energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres. This is often confused with Alfred Watkins’ concept of the Ley Line. I had also meditated quite nicely, been energised, and had regained my contact with the elemental forces that I would then be able to call upon throughout the year. All in all a good morning’s work!

I was at the Mysterious Earth Conference this year. The conference was held at the Village Hall in the village of Grimsargh near Preston in Lancashire, England. Kal had come up so that we could go to this event together, which was very nice of him to make the effort. There were four speakers lined up, but we only found three of them to be relevant to our studies and research, so I will concentrate on the positives and tell you about these three.

This year's Mysterious Earth lectures

The three speakers of interest to me were:-

Kevin Rowan-Drewitt – Neolithic Observatories

Pete Knight – West Kennet Long Barrow: Ancestors, Landscape and the Cosmos

Gary Biltcliffe – The Belinus Line & The Spine of Albion

Here is a run-down of their primary themes and some notes that I took about each of their lectures.

Neolithic observatories by Kevin Rowan-Drewitt

Kevin Rowan-Drewitt

Kevin’s talk was informative and a feast of facts. Having read many books on the subject of Alexander Thom, his Megalithic Yard, and of his convincing argument that most if not all stone circles are designed as neolithic calendars to track the movements of the sun and moon, I didn’t find too many points that were new to me. However, Kevin’s lecture was clearly delivered, well structured and well-argued, even if he was simply relating other people’s theories. For those who may have been new to the concept of neolithic astrological observatories it would have been truly enlightening.

Some notes that I made that were particularly significant for me were:-

Bryn Celli Ddu on Anglesey has in-built alignments for tracking Venus and the Summer Solstice. You may remember that I was called there in 2009 to observe Venus, even though at the time I had no idea what I was seeing.

Mayburgh Henge in Cumbria is aligned to the eastern sunrise

The book ‘Uriel’s Machine‘ by Christopher Knight & Robert Lomas contains the practical workings out of the theories of ancient astrological circle structure, and they based much of their work on the ‘Book Of Enoch‘, particularly the section ‘The Book of Courses of the Heavenly Luminaries’

In the Book of Enoch the circle-makers are mentioned as The Watchers. Rowan-Dewitt interprets this as being the Beaker People.

Personally, I feel this Bronze Age Beaker culture only created some of the last generation of megalithic structures, not the first ones, even if their structures were the most sophisticated, impressive and enduring. The astrological know-how was already in existence and evidenced by timber and rudimentary stone circles before the arrival of the so-called Beaker culture, so this doesn’t hang together for me.

Also in that ancient text, The Nephilim are mentioned as being from the Orion Constellation.

Newgrange, in the Boyne Valley in Ireland is aligned with the Winter Solstice sunrise but also with Venus too, on an eight-year cycle.

The line of ‘lozenge’ shapes or crosses on the lintel at Newgrange may denote the Venus cycle, as there are eight such symbols in a row.

Thornborough Henge in Yorkshire is aligned to Orion.

The Sun has a 32-year cycle until it rises at exactly the same spot on the horizon. This fact is used by Rowan-Dewitt to support the idea that astrological observances and star lore must have been passed down through the generations or preserved in some fashion because neolithic people had a relatively short life span.

Most measurements of megalithic structures are in 0.5 Megalithic Yards, or 16.32 inches. The Megalithic Yard of 2.72 feet was used for convenience by Alexander Thom.

West Kennet Long Barrow by Peter Knight

Peter Knight

Peter Knight is a well-practised and engaging speaker. His presentation was slick, precise and moved you from one concept to another easily and with a sense of passion. I am a fan of the West Kennet Long Barrow myself and have had many visits to the site mostly unaccompanied and without anyone else around, so I have been able to practise many of the things that Peter talked about in the shamanic parts of his talk. However, in the first part he went through the various alignments with the surrounding megalithic sites such as Avebury, Silbury Hill, East Kennet, and many of the lesser-known circles, tumuli and hills that form the rich Wiltshire megalithic landscape.

Some notes that I made on this talk were:-

There are sun and moon rising or setting sight alignments from West Kennet to many of the surrounding features.

Some of the lesser-known sites include Belas Knap chamber, Silbaby (or Woden Mound), Morgan’s Hill and Harestone stone circle.

The long barrow itself is constructed with layers of large rubble, then fine rubble, turf, then a sarsen stone core. The layering is reminiscent of Wilhelm Reich’s Orgone Accumulator principle.

There is an acoustic “hot spot” close to the stone called “The Skull Stone” which is considered to be a portal to the Underworld.

Long barrows and chambers in the area are mainly aligned to the South-East (the Midwinter Solstice).

East Kennet is aligned to the Orion constellation, West Kennet to the Gemini constellation.

A cave was usually associated with a process of initiation or transformation.

The Spine of Albion by Gary Biltcliffe

I have been eagerly awaiting Gary’s book about this subject for over a year now. Hopefully it is due to be published soon. Gary has spent a lot of time, effort and money on travelling up and down the country in pursuit of a ley lineThe term used by many British dowsers to describe an energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres.

Energy leys may have inter-twining streams of male and female energies weaving along them, as though the energy ley is an attractor, a pathway or a conduit for the male and female energies.. It is easily confused with ley and therefore its use is not recommended by dowsers. that he is calling the Belinus Line, after the ancient Celtic god Baal or Bel. The name thereafter got associated with a king of England called King Belinus, who was supposedly one of the great road-building kings, although many believe that the lack of historical evidence suggests he may be a mythical figure rather than an actual king. Certainly, it is not uncommon for people in power to associate themselves with great engineering from lost generations, for example the Romans simply paved many of the existing spirit roads that were created as embankments by the druid culture and those before them too. We all now know these roads as ‘Roman Roads’ which is testament to the power of a written historical record, rather than to the feats of engineering.

For the talk in Preston Gary concentrated on those sites which were more local to us, rather than describe all the sites along the line. Given that it had taken him 20 years to follow them, he was unlikely to get through them all in an hour!

Seven Barrows Down is the crossing point for the Belinus Line with the Michael/Mary Line.

The village of Dunsop Bridge is the geographical centre of the Belinus Line

North/South ley lines are associated with physical and East/West lines with the spiritual, thus the Belinus Line is mainly a physical line with very few spiritual centres on it.

The line goes through various centres including Lichfield, Birmingham, Manchester and Carlisle.

DragonDragons are spirit or energetic beings that reside in sacred sites and have a particular location in them and also move throughout the day (and or season). They also leave the sacred site on occasion, which again differentiates them from Genius Loci which don’t. stories hint at the location of sacred sites such as caves, wells and mounds.

Guy Raglan Philips was the first to identify the line.

The female lines are violet in colour and the male lines are gold/yellow

The line goes through The Bridestones – formerly one of England’s largest long barrows.

The Kemp Howe stone circle is on the line

Other sites on the line are Merlindale, Knowlmere, Alderley Edge, Caverswall, The Rollright Stones, and Uffington DragonDragons are spirit or energetic beings that reside in sacred sites and have a particular location in them and also move throughout the day (and or season).

On my travels southward I had been following a line that I had felt was true, consistent, and indivisible. On the morning of the last day of my travels I stood on top of Christchurch Castle in the freezing grey morning, hardly daring to take my gloves off for more than a few seconds to dowse. Yet, I was glad I did because the results were extraordinary and unlike anything I had dowsed before in relation to neutral energy leys.

I was dowsing for the direction of the ley and my first response was that it went towards the Norman House down below me – a ruined house that stood next to an unusual water channel that split the River Avon in two. Now, Christchurch used to be called Twyneham, because it has two larger rivers running past it, and the town stood ‘be-twyn-em’. Yet, the Norman House had two parts of the same river flowing past it – the normal river course flowing fast and free, and then this narrow channel that was running slower.

Back on the castle’s small mound the rods pointed at the Norman House ruins and I made a mental note of the direction, then checked it using my compass. Damn thing must be going wrong – it was pointing East not South! I dowsed the width and strength of the line as it went to the east – it was only a few feet wide and with a medium strength. At this point I was expecting something stronger. I became suspicious.

Christchurch Castle - early morning

I began to ask more general questions such as:

At this castle what is the overall strength of the energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres. This is often confused with Alfred Watkins’ concept of the Ley Line.
What is the width of the line passing through this place at its widest point? – The rods turned at 22 feet. That tallied with other places where the line had been strong.

So, what were the previous answers which indicated a line strength of 5 and a width of only 4 feet? I moved to the northern side of the castle to ask some more questions:-

Is the energy ley lineThe term used by many British dowsers to describe an energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres.
Is the line 22 feet wide at this point? YES

I instructed the rods to allow me to follow the line. I began to walk forwards and one rod continued pointing towards the distant Priory to the south, and the other rods began to bend left, towards the Norman House! Was the line splitting at this point? It seemed so. The wider, stronger line was going in the north-south direction that I expected, but a smaller line was being diverted to the Norman House down by the two rivers. Why? What was causing such a split, and how?

I asked the rods whether it was possible to take me to the cause of the split, and they twitched in my hand, directing me down the mound and towards the Norman House. OK. I got the idea and went to the house in search of the cause of this strange behaviour. I walked into the ruins expecting to be shown some feature of the house itself, but instead the rods led me through the house and out the other side only crossing when I was standing right next to the channel of water that flowed past the building’s remains. The water? I asked the rods – is it this channel of water that is causing the split in the energy ley lineThe term used by many British dowsers to describe an energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres. One of the rods turned, but the other didn’t, indicating I was “half right” but that there was more to it than that. I looked around and saw the faster flowing river just next to the slower channel. Was it also the water in the other part of the river that was causing the split? YES – both rods turned.

The configuration of the two rivers flowing at different speeds but next to each other was causing some effect that was attracting the energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres. From the point where it touched the water the energy flowed out into the distance. We have seen this kind of effect before when we dowsed a line at Dyserth Church in North Wales. There Kal and I found that an energy lineThe direction energy takes when moving. It may be straight or curved, in several dimensions and be composed of one or more different types of energies, i.e. negative, positive or neutral. Seems like something similar was happening here too.

The Priory: The End of the Line

From the top of the castle my attention was drawn to Christchurch Priory which was in directly south following the energy lineThe direction energy takes when moving. It may be straight or curved, in several dimensions and be composed of one or more different types of energies, i.e. negative, positive or neutral. I made my way through the early morning Sunday quiet of the town and followed the tourist route to the church, encountering a fabulous ducking stool along the way. Be careful how you say that!

I found the energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres. This is often confused with Alfred Watkins’ concept of the Ley Line. The line went into the front door and stretched some 22 feet past that. I dowsed the strength of the line – a full-on 10 on my scale. Now I was wondering whether the line passed through the church, so I walked around to the other side where I was able to recognise the other side of the church’s “cross” (is it called a transept?) and I began to walk towards where the line should emerge…walking…walking…the rods weren’t crossing. Oh! I went all the way around the southern edge as far as I could – no response at all. Oh! The line must END inside the church then! Now I was excited. I had travelled all the way from Arbor Low in Derbyshire following this line and finally, here in Christchurch Priory, I would be able to dowse the end of the line. Cool!

To test my patience the church opened for viewing at 9:30am – it was 8:30am. I had to retreat to a local coffee shop where I broke with my newly-self-imposed reluctance to drink coffee and warmed myself with the only palatable hot drink they offered (Have you tried a Starbucks “chai”? You’d have a coffee too). I amused myself by draining their wi-fi signal for an hour and then returned to be amongst the first to visit the church.

Inside the priory I warmed myself and wandered around slowly looking for an opportunity to dowse. It wasn’t going to happen. There were too many people around I I didn’t want to antagonise anyone given that I had spent three days getting to this point. I wasn’t going to be thrown out now. I would have to adopt another strategy. Luckily a friend of mine had been encouraging me to try my hand at feeling the energies without the dowsing rods. Now was the perfect testing ground for that work. I went into a light trance and pushed my aura out into the church searching around for that familiar feeling that I had become so used to over the last few days…

…I could feel the line coming into the door, and then it seemed to…to bend…and to flow down either side of the priory….I picked one side and followed it. I walked in a kind of wavy line down the right-hand side of the church stopping to admire the stained glass pictures on the windows as I passed. I was also scanning the pictures for any hints of figures related to my energy quest – St>Michael, St.George, St.Margaret…any of these notable symbols. Sadly, there were none that I recognised, but then Christian history is not my forte.

I reached the end of the church and the feeling I was following pulled my attention into the Lady Chapel – a large alcove at the end of the priory that was the only area with people gathered in it. Of course, this being Sunday, there was some form of service going on – a christening was at the early stages and I stood at the back trying to scan the scene without paying attention to the distractions of the ceremony. Where was the line focused in this Lady Chapel, I wondered, scanning the area? My eyes were being drawn towards some purple curtains on the right of the chapel where there was a bunch of flowers and a cross in an alcove in the wall. Something was in there, and it was the end of the line! I felt it clearly. But there was no way I could walk through these people and interrupt their ceremony….I waited.

And I waited. The vicar presiding over the christening was American and was in no hurry to proceed. His leisurely pace helped to decide that I should go off and have a look around the rest of the church maybe coming back later to try to find the end point of the energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres. I wandered down the northern edge of the priory and admired the countless strange beasts carved into the masonry of the church aisles and features. They were crawling everywhere!

After what I felt was an hour but which was probably more like ten minutes I wandered back to the Lady Chapel. The vicar was still going very very slowly through the routine – boy was he giving them their moneys-worth with this!

I stood at the back and went deeper into my trace state – my eyes were continuously drawn to the alcove and curtains on the right-hand side of the chapel. It was definitely there that was the endpoint of this whole journey. My frustration at the situation rose to near bursting and I was just about to consider going out and coming back in a few hours, even though I had a 5-hour drive home and a time limit, when I noticed a white sign I hadn’t read yet. It was placed just above head height and talked about the contents of the Lady Chapel. Ahh…maybe there was something of interest here?

“The statue of Our Lady of Walsingham … The shrine commemorates the incarnation of God in Jesus Christ by taking our human nature from the Virgin Mary and joining it with his divine nature.”

A union of male and female – the female energies joined with the male energies. I had been following an energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres. At the last moment, the line had been bent from its North-South strict course and ran along the length of the priory to come to an end at this particular holy relic – a statue that was the personification of the concept of the joining of male and female human and divine forces.

Our Lady of Walsingham - a relic in the Lady Chapel of Christchurch

Anglicans go on a pilgrimage each year to Walsingham, a small village in North Norfolk. Of the statue in Walsingham this is said:

“Our Lady, as she is venerated at Walsingham, is depicted as a simple woman, a mother. She is seated on the throne of Wisdom, in the midst of the Church which is represented by the two pillars symbolic of the Gate of Heaven, with seven rings to signify the seven sacraments and the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit. The arched back of the throne reminds us of the rainbow which was set as a sign of God’s fidelity to his creation. Our Lady is clothed in the blue of divinity, the white of motherhood and the red of virginity. In her hand she holds a lily-sceptre with three blooms because she was virginal before, during and after the Saviour’s birth. As the Woman of the New Creation, the New Eve, she crushes beneath her feet a toadstone, symbolic of the power of evil. As the Queen of Heaven and of England, her Dowry, she is crowned with a Saxon crown. On his mother’s knee is the child Jesus who, as the Word of God made Flesh, holds the book of the Gospels. He extends his right arm in a double gesture of blessing and protection of his mother.“

I think, if we see beyond the overtly Christian terminology we can understand that what is being described here is a process involving the seven chakras (‘sacraments’) and leading to a unification of the three forces – human, earth and spirit energies – male, female and neutral. There is also a strong sense of protection, which is signified by the signs of protection – blessings, light blue colour, and the protection of the divine mother.

This was the Holy Grail of my search. I had found the means by which this energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres.

In this third and final part of our excursion to Yorkshire I talk about the fascinating experiments that we did at Bolton Abbey – site of a ruined priory and a working church. There was so much good dowsing work done at this site that it needed a whole post to itself to do it justice. I reckon we’ll still be discussing and debating these findings for many years to come!

6. Bolton Abbey. [Bing map]

Bolton Abbey is an evocative place for me. It is probably the first place that I remember visiting as a child. I remember that my mother really wanted to go for some reason. I remember a tall long hallway with a lovely grass surface and the early Spring sunshine shining through the glassless ruined windows. I also remember it being cool and windy. So, it was with some delight that I found that this place was easily reachable as we ventured around the various megalithic sites in the area. I also knew that it was the kind of place that would be ideally suited to us doing some experimental dowsing, and I had lined up a lot of questions to work through.

How Bolton Priory used to look

We managed to find the exact hall that I remembered and did our dowsing work there, even though the area was timidly fenced off. I wasn’t going to be put off from that – I had questions that needed answers and memories to evoke! We wil shortly be releasing several Druid Diary MP3s of the long recording that we took while driving back to Cheshire that day – these recordings go over many of the results recorded below and put them in context. Watch out for those soon.

A summary of the results would be that we worked with magnets on male, female and neutral energies finding that magnets affect earth energies, but there is a cost. We also found that the site was now aligned with Deneb in Cygnus constellation, drawing upon blue/green/yellow spectrum of energies to promote fertility. Within those hallowed walls we got out a long set of questions to ask about various topics.

The questions we dowsed at Bolton Priory were these:-

COLOUR DOWSING

Is the colour of subtle energyA form of energy that has so far eluded scientific definition. It is neither electric, magenetic, nor electro-magnetic, so far as our current technical equipment can measure. It does, however, exhibit many of the characteristics of magnetism and electricity in terms of its effects and properties. It may be a form of either or both of those energies that we have not yet identified. related to its resonant frequency? YES (Kal pointed out that this was a logical not a mystical question)

Is the colour of subtle energyA form of energy that has so far eluded scientific definition. It may be a form of either or both of those energies that we have not yet identified. a form of light? YES (Again, Kal was unimpressed by the question, but I pointed out that I was re-affirming what we knew)

Are there any colours of subtle energyA form of energy that has so far eluded scientific definition.
Can a human affect the colour of subtle energyA form of energy that has so far eluded scientific definition.
STAR AND SITES

One might consider that it would be quite unusual for a Christian Priory to be utilising the energies of the green spectrum to promote fertility. This is especially true of its originally most active time, Beltane – a pagan fertility festival. I think this indicates that the site has a far older history, and that when the site was sanctified by the original priests (if we might call them that) then it was for its powerful fertility-enhancing qualities that the site was either chosen or created. We may never know which came first. Interesting, then, that I found this book that said that the Vale of Skipton in which the priory was built is one of the most fertile in England! Chicken meet egg – egg meet chicken! He also says:-

MAGNETIC EFFECTS

Can this energetic line be affected by a magnet? YES. Neutral, male and female energy is affected by magnets.

I need to explain what we did with the magnetic experiments. I had brought two very strong magnets with me, but they were oblong shaped and I didn’t know which end or side was which polarity, really.

The Neutral Test

To test the neutral energy effects we identified the neutral energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres. Interestingly, when we dowsed how HIGH the line was, it also measured exactly one Megalithic Yard.

Of course, according to modern science and the International System of Units (SI) the Megalithic Yard is “pseudo metrology”, but actually I think it is just an ancient system and it has far more justification than the current system, which was adopted purely for its simplicity. The ancient system is based upon the measurement of the Earth itself – what could be more natural than that? Take a look in the “Books” section on this site for books by Alexander Thom, Tom Flowers and Robin Heath on this subject, not to mention John Michell. You will then come to see how the inch, foot, yard (and the Imperial System that then emerged from these measurements) in general has been denigrated but I for one was never taught where this system came from, so that’s why it always seemed strange. I was indoctrinated with the SI system at school but its measurements make no sense in relation to the Earth, its megalithic sites or its energies. This we have proved for ourselves, and it is Imperial measurements that you will hear us talk about on this site.

Knowing the width of the neutral energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres. The rods took me to the middle of the line and about six inches outside of one of the edges. I placed the magnet and we began to dowse the effect. The effect was immediate – the line now bulged on the one side where the magnet had been placed, and the edge of the line now passed through the magnet. The line had been attracted to the magnet! We repeated the exercise on the other side with the same results.

The Male Test

For the male energy test Kal located a male line that went from a male power centreA place where a person of a particular alignmentAlignment relates to the concept that humans have their own energy fields that are oriented or formed in a specific way such that the person is either suited better to one energy source of another. The line travelled out to the hall’s northern wall and then wavered along the edge of the wall until it went out through the blocked up arch, a northern exit, on the slightly raised area of the hall where the large east window used to be.

Again I asked the dowsing rods to regulate the test. I placed a magnet where the rods indicated, which was on the raised area, about ten feet beyond the exit point for the male line through the priory’s northern wall.

Kal dowsed the line he had just traced once more. This time the male line swerved out of the hall much sooner than before. The male line was now further away from the point where the magnet was. The magnet had therefore repulsed the male line, pushing it backwards.

We later worked out that Male energy is attracted to the North magnetic pole, and repuled by the South pole.

The east window and raised platform

Kal used his dowsing rods to find a female power centreA place where a person of a particular alignmentAlignment relates to the concept that humans have their own energy fields that are oriented or formed in a specific way such that the person is either suited better to one energy source of another. The form of the female energy emerging from this centre was an anti-clockwise spiral that took three turns outwards (we stopped dowsing it at that point, but it seemed ‘hemmed in’ by the walls).

Again I asked my dowsing rods to show me a suitable place to affect the female spiral and I was taken up onto the raised platform near the east window, except I was in the opposite corner to the female power centreA place where a person of a particular alignmentAlignment relates to the concept that humans have their own energy fields that are oriented or formed in a specific way such that the person is either suited better to one energy source of another. I placed the magnet on the floor and this time I dowsed the spiral fromt he female centre.

Instead of walking round several times in a circle I was straight away pushed out to the edges of the wall. As soon as I was in open ground the female line headed in a shallow arc towards the magnet, where the line ended.

The magnet had pulled the female energy lineThe direction energy takes when moving. Later we dowsed that the female energy was attracted to the Southern magnetic pole of the magnet, and generally to the South Pole region of the planet. Of course, it is also repulsed by the North Pole, as you would expect by now.

Additional Information

One final note about the use of magnets on earth energies – it’s a bad idea! According to our dowsing the use of magnets for more than 20 minutes will permanently deform the form and elasticity of the earth energy. The result of deformation is that energy does not flow in a natural form, and being unnatural it turns into the harmful black streamA flow of subtle energy emerging from a source. The source is usually imbued with some negative qualities, for example, it may be a source of geopathic stress where geology is under pressure, or toxic gases are emitted. Alternatively, the source may be imbued with negative emotions such as anger, fear or hatred left there by the intent of a human being. The result is a toxic dispersal of flows of “black” energy. These flows can cause disruption to everything in their path, such as accident blackspots if they cross roads, or polluted streams if they contact water. variety over time. Suddenly for us this has massive implications for all those products around your home that use magnetism to operate – telephones, microwave ovens, stereo systems, computer and their monitors, CRT TVs, I suppose there are quite a few. Not very beneficial to your house energies, as Kal will tell you from his vast house dowsing experience.

In addition I asked whether there were any energetic ‘drains’ or ‘sinks’ at this priory – there weren’t. On the way out I walked past some gravestone and couldn’t help but ask about the presence of shades. None there. We wondered why, until we turned the corner to find a series of stone plaques that marked the deposit sites for cremated remains. Ah…was there a link between cremation and the destruction of an energetic shroudAs coined by Kal after reading the definitions of C.W.Leadbeater – the early 20th Century mystic. Leadbeater considered that man, when he died, could become stuck in a “ShadeA shade is the energy body of a human being that has become transfixed at a geographical location. The shade retains many of the qualities of the human that it was attached to (memories, character traits, a level of sentience, movement between places known in life).” – an energetic shell that would retain many of the characteristics of the human in his physical life. It is frequently taken to be what is termed a ‘ghost’ but although it has a certain amount of sentience, it would seem to be limited in terms of its ability to move from the space within which it has anchored itself. It must be stated – it is NOT the person who has died – it is a remainder copy that contains the memories and characteristics of the original energetic fields of the human, but now has no physical organism to work with. or shadeA shade is the energy body of a human being that has become transfixed at a geographical location. The shade retains many of the qualities of the human that it was attached to (memories, character traits, a level of sentience, movement between places known in life).? Something we will have to answer soon.

As we walked back I speculated about the return of the male energy. It was not yet Imbolc truly (which is Tuesday 1st February) so why were there some weak male energies here? We dowsed and found that the male energy had been drawn back up to the surface of the earth by the gravitational pull of the full moon on the 19th January. Obviously, to celebrate the return of the male energies on the 1st February is a safe date because no matter how much the full moon date moves throughout January, by 1st February they can be guaranteed to have returned. Ingenious timing for a festival!

This is the second part of our Yorkshire outing at Imbolc. In this half of the day we had our serious heads on. We went looking for a mighty stone circle, then passed a curious tower that we had to investigate, went to dowse at Bolton Abbey priory as the light began to fade, and then made a rapid return to the stone circle to clean up. All will be explained.

4. Druid’s Altar stone circle at Bordley on the B6285 north of Skipton. [Megalithic portal link - Bing OS map]

Beyond Malham Cove we realised we have gone the wrong way. We shouldn’t have been going through Malham, beautiful as it was. We stopped and re-calibrated our route. Another half hour to the stone circle – really? It had seemed so close on the map. We checked our route once more as the road turned into a single car-width track but we were on the right road. Upwards we climbed, glad of the four-wheel drive and new tyres, but my poor suspension paid a heavy price for our wilderness visit.

We parked and made out way to where a cairn was marked on the map. There was no stone circle in this area and this cairn was all we had to go on. Nobody that we passed knew where this ‘Druid’s Altar’ stone circle was. how could they miss it – it seemed huge and distinctive? The warning signs began to tingle like an over-active spider-sense. After fifteen minutes walking along a path to nowhere we decided to climb up to the nearest peak to see what we could see. It was hard going in the icy grass. At the top we saw…nothing. On the way back to the car I had a brainwave – what if I could find the OS Map co-ordinates and use my GPS2OS application to locate the site? It worked. Frustrating moments later we had our directions – must remember that trick! We were only a mile out in both longitude and latitude! Bacon saved.

To be honest we still struggled to find the Druid’s Altar stone circle even when we had the exact co-ordinates! The images on web sites had not quite shown the diminutive scale of the stones. I thought they were six feet tall – they were three feet tall. We found our respective power centres and had lunch. My power centreA place where a person of a particular alignmentAlignment relates to the concept that humans have their own energy fields that are oriented or formed in a specific way such that the person is either suited better to one energy source of another.
A druid’s altar – now cracked

I was soon up dowsing again – the end of January is still bitingly cold when you’re still, so I was soon dowsing all over, asking questions about the circle, where the energies were, where they flowed to. One of the checks I have started to do is to ask whether there is anything that needs modifying. I put it that generally because it is a kind of “balanced” question – neither supposing that positive nor negative energies need be applied, only asking whether the circle is properly energised as it was originally intended to be. The answer was, “Something needs to be done”. Taking a lead from Kal, I asked to be led to the place that had the problem. Moments later I had wound my way to the only other large standing stone in the circle – the one that had a great big horizontal crack in it.

Papering over the cracks

I didn’t really need to dowse to find out what the problem was – I was looking right at it – the crack in the stone. Nevertheless, I had learned over the years not to assume anything so I dowsed it – moving the rods around the stone until they crossed. They crossed at the wide crack in the stone – well, I had to check. There was a black streamA flow of subtle energy emerging from a source. These flows can cause disruption to everything in their path, such as accident blackspots if they cross roads, or polluted streams if they contact water. of energy emerging from the crack which went sinewing out of the circle and ended up spiralling into a pool of black energy some fifteen feet away to one side of the circle.

I asked what paraphernalia might be employed to assist me with the work of healing – incense, not crystals. I was mildly disappointed, wondering just when I would be able to use the crystals. It would take five sticks of incense around the stone to aid the repair. As they burned away I retreated to my power centreA place where a person of a particular alignmentAlignment relates to the concept that humans have their own energy fields that are oriented or formed in a specific way such that the person is either suited better to one energy source of another.
Half way through I was called to use my ashen healing staff by placing the end of it into the crack and focusing the healing energies around me into the gap. I could visually see the transparent energy flowing in, and when the crack was filled I withdrew the staff and smoothed the crack over with my hand. I was using primal energy to seal the crack – a skill I had learned the previous year. When that was done I returned to my power centreA place where a person of a particular alignmentAlignment relates to the concept that humans have their own energy fields that are oriented or formed in a specific way such that the person is either suited better to one energy source of another.
Well, no learning taking place this year, it seemed. This year felt like it was more about putting last year’s learning into practise. A felt satisfied that I had done a good job and we packed to leave. On the route back to the nearby car I picked up some litter – cans and plastic wrappers from the moorland. Another small deed that simply needed doing, and for which I sought no rewards. Being a druid is often just a form of service, but the rewards are immeasurable. If you want to know why I do this, then see this previous post which explains all.

5. Barden Tower, Barden village near Barden Moor, north of Bolton Abbey. [Bing OS map]

We were on our way to Bolton Abbey now, having tried to get to “The Devil’s Apronful” and “Simon’s Seat” but been thwarted by a closed road and time pressure. It wasn’t going to be possible to find a long way around to these sites, walk up the steep long slope to get to them, dowse them, make it back to the car, and still make it to any other site that day before nightfall. The easier option by far was to head to Bolton Abbey, which we did.

As we flew along the small country road admiring the woods, hills and valleys there suddenly arose a huge stone square tower just at the turning we wanted to take but which was close. We turned around shortly after and decided to go to the tower as a quick diversion seeing as it was so close to the roadside. We parked up in the designated area and were visually accosted by the numerous “Don’t do this“, “None of that sort of thing“, “Forbidden to breathe here” type signs that I immediately resent. That put me out of favour with the site straight away. We walked around the one allowed route, looking inside at the ruin. Quick dowse – was there anything here of energetic interest to either of us – NO. Oh.

We headed back to the car, and as we emerged from the tower’s immediate vicinity I stood stock still at the sight of an old hoary tree in the grounds of the restaurant that adjoined the site. I did my best to identify the type of three – it looked like an ash tree, but I had never seen one growing in that way before, nor had I ever seen one that appeared to be so old. I dowsed whether it had an energetic presence and the rods nearly spun round to hit me. Clearly, then answer was yes.

An old and powerful ash tree

Both Kal and I spent some time just touching it and feeling how powerful the old ash tree was. It had an undeniable character and presence. The visit had been worth it after all – here was another powerful tree to add to our list of trees worth visiting. Time for Bolton Abbey, which was to be a most intriguing episode of dowsing questions, correlations and exciting new experiments, and I will talk about that in some detail in the third post of this series coming soon.

Before we left for home I made an important discovery. I had left a pair of dowsing rods at the Druid’s Altar stone circle, and I probably had just enough time to retrieve them before the light faded completely. Kal was very generous as didn’t show his disappointment at missing any further sites that day. We kind of knew we’d be back around Yorkshire soon this year – it is too full of interesting stuff not to come back.

On my return to the Druid’s Altar I found my rods perched on top of the power centreA place where a person of a particular alignmentAlignment relates to the concept that humans have their own energy fields that are oriented or formed in a specific way such that the person is either suited better to one energy source of another. I knew exactly where they were. In the fading light I couldn’t help but have a quick dowse with the rods to see whether I had made any difference to the site. I dowsed that the site had a genius lociGenius Loci means 'spirit of the place' and refers to the geological/gaian spirit of place. It is transfixed to a place – being an embodiment of the collective intelligence of the place. there (female), and she was content with my work there. I tried to make a connection back to my house from the site. Sadly, I later found that this connection had actually failed because the energies at the site were just too weak to make the connection properly. Another interesting lesson learned.

My dowsing rods were not the only thing that I forgot that day. On the way home I realised that I had forgotten to commune with any spirit guidance and had not engaged in finding out what the next part of the year had in store for me! How could I forget that? Then I realised that I still had a few days left in which to do that. I was relieved. Now I could find a site near to home and do some work with familiar spirits. Actually, it was a good thing that I forgot because I reckon I will need to find a sympathetic oak tree for the next stage, and I can only think of a few, most of which are in Cheshire, not Yorkshire!

As it turned out, there would be other factors involved in this ritual too, such as a totem animal that I would need to recognise before I could do the Imbolc work. This year is getting intriguing already and it’s only just started!

Gwas. Forgetful but not regretful.

Imbolc – 29th January, 2011 – Yorkshire

It had been a long time coming. Kal and I had intended to go to Lindisfarne in Northumberland for Imbolc, and in fact I had stated as much in the previous podcast for January, but when I worked out how much of the short day I would be spending in the car…well, we turned our attentions to one of our other focal areas for this year – Yorkshire. Now, I’m a Yorkshire lad, born in the county but having moved after only a few years there. I don’t remember anything about it, so whilst it felt like a homecoming of sorts, it didn’t feel like my spiritual home, which is Wales.

The had an itinerary of sites to visit which Kal had dowsed, and then I had added to and plotted the most efficient journey between them. Seemed like a perfect combination, although asking Kal to navigate is like asking Norman Wisdom to be your wedding planner – comic moments were bound to arise!

The day’s sites

1. Shipley to test the Northern ley lineThe term used by many British dowsers to describe an energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres.
Shipley is not the most picturesque town in northern England. I’m sure it has some redeeming features but we felt, as we stepped out of the car, that we ought to get our dowsing done as quietly as possible and as soon as possible. Kal deferred to me to do that job – thanks Kal! Using a single dowsing rod I asked whether there was a ley lineThe term used by many British dowsers to describe an energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres.

I asked to be shown to where it was, and to get directions at each junction. As we walked towards the junction of each road I got the dowsing rod out and it quickly swung to show me which way I should walk. Left, then right, the slightly left, then left again, right…now we were walking down a back street with very few people around. Better for dowsing than the main market square which was thronging with Saturday shoppers. Just as we were wondering what on earth there could be to see down this back alley we arrived at the Hockney pub and the rod took me right up to the door and spun around – a sign that we were at a conclusion point.

I got out my iPhone compass application and set it to magnetic North in the settings. I ahd to wait a while because the compass had interference again. Every time I come to use a compass in an energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres.
We followed the line back towards the centre of Shipley town now that we had an orientation to follow. As we approached the market area we came across a couple of surprises. We saw how the line went through a statue of a ram sitting upright. In heraldic terms this silver ram denotes peace and authority. This statue was dedicated to the memory of Princess Diana, which seemed odd for it to be on an energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres. Energy leys may have inter-twining streams of male and female energies weaving along them, as though the energy ley is an attractor, a pathway or a conduit for the male and female energies.. This is reminiscent of things that David Icke talks about in terms of the memorial that was placed on top of the Pont D’Alma bridge under which the ill-fated Mercedes car crashed on the night she died. There is a theory that energy leys form a network of channels along which both good and ill energy can be spread. Hamish Miller, the legendary dowser, had a keen interest in this aspect and would work with a group of like-minded friends to attempt to restore these lines to have beneficial properties.I say “restore” because I believe that at one time this is how they were charged – with positive energies.

From that point the energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres. Notice the intertwining red and black serpent shapes. I find it interesting that this coincidental pattern is at the exact spot where the energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres. Perhaps the spot was chosen because it “felt right” or it was the symbolic centre of the town. Either way – it is a rapid way to identify the ley’s crossing point now. We should have walked the labyrinth, but it didn’t occur to us at the time – we were more interested in sandwiches, if I recall! A wonderful opportunity presented but missed, I feel.

2. St Helen’s Well in Eshton, near Gargrave, Skipton – for cleansing and connection to the spirit of the divine feminine. [Map / Megalithic Portal link]

As we arrived in Eshton village near Gargrave we felt the warmth of the sun. The sun was shining all around making the area light and welcoming – a good start. We looked around for possible locations that the spring might be. Looking back at it now it should have been obvious to us that the spring that we had intended to find was the one at the far end of the field through which the Eshton Beck ran, and where a small footbridge had been built. Later on we would see people walking back from that very area, but by then we had found what we came for anyway.

From the very start let’s get one thing clear: St Helen is nothing other than Elen of the Roads. Elen is the lady of the green bower who shows seekers the invisible paths that connect the land. You could call her the patron saint of dowsers, but as a pagan that would be a strange moniker to afflict her with. St Helen is certainly not named after St Helena of Constantinople – for that would be very strange indeed.

We located what we thought was the well on the other side of a mossy wall near to the road bridge. We clambered over into the small woodland patch and everything felt great. The spring was bubbling with clear water, and streaming down the shallow hill to reach into the nearby Eshton Beck, surely soon to be renamed the Eshton River, for it is surely becoming too big for its boots! In the dappled sunlight through the trees we dowsed as to whether this was the correct place to be – both of us got a strong YES. With that we began to meditate – first lighting incense to prepare our spaces. Part way through my meditation I had the urge to touch the water and I moved to the well-head and anointed myself with its cleansing fresh waters.

The new Elen Spring

I went back to the meditation and soon I felt the presence of a gentle female force. I invited a friendly water spirit to join us, and the moment that happened I was treated to a journey that I will never forget! As I stood at the top of the stream I was mentally plunged into the babbling well-head. I became a molecule of water, being thrust through the churning currents, gliding around the smooth rocks in the stream, playing with the other water molecules, and whirling, falling, rising, flowing down the stream in a torrent of joyous aquatic acrobatics. Half way down I leapt out and returned to the top of the stream – like some kind of Telletubby, I cried “Again, again!” and jumped back into the stream for another experience of this – laughing, smiling, loving every second of this Alton Towers ride I was being given.

As I returned to my waking consciousness I thanked the spirit of that well for her truly exciting and enlivening play. As each journey down the stream had been different a realisation struck me – Elen had been trying to tell me something : “On this journey one never goes by the same path twice to the same destination.“ In return for this sage advice I scoured the stream for rubbish and soon I was reaching in picking out the cans, bottles and plastics that were the inevitable detritus of the passing and uncaring race that calls itself civilised. That was my return payment, and I gave service willingly. The stream was free to flow as it willed.

The official old well location looked like this:

The official spring of St.Helen (c) Marion Benham, posted on Megalithic.co.uk

In a way I was glad that we missed that old version of the well and found the new one instead. The reports of the old well mentioned that the incredible stone carved heads found in the well had been stolen, and that the well was now in a bad state of repair, neglected and desecrated. Perhaps the spirit of the waters had also gone too. We also missed the giant’s grave mounds nearby, but then we had had our inspiration and it was time to move on to the next site – we had a lot to do in the short daylight hours.

3. Malham Cove, Malham, near Settle. [Map] – for the sake of curiosity.

Due to some typical poorly-researched navigation and wanton inattention we ended up going through Malham, mere minutes after I had been telling Kal about how busy the place gets. He had said, “I wonder why it is such an attractive place to people?“.Now, here we were unexpectedly witnessing the lines of cars parked along the lanes leading to Malham village, and soon we were up above the village passing by the cove itself. We had to stop and see if we could work out why the energies were so attractive here. We did. Both Kal and I dowsed a strong response for earth-related energy forms at Malham Cove, and some water energy too. That fits with the cove/caves and river running down the valley, I suppose. Not a surprise really. Sometimes dowsing just confirms common sense!

On the way down the other side of Malham Cove we were both gob-smacked by the stunningly beautiful strata of limestone features that lined the route around Arnecliffe, called Yew Cogar Scar. It was all I could do to keep my eyes on the steep, narrow, and cyclist-infested lanes with all the beauty that surrounded us.

Those were the first sites of the day, and there was plenty more to come on our Yorkshire tour. In the afternoon we would visit a cairn (inadvertently), go to a stone circle (eventually), do some very important dowsing work at Bolton Abbey, and then have to return to the stone circle (stupidly). All will be revealed soon.

Sunday 22nd August, 2010 – The Hurlers, Minions, Cornwall.

Having driven through the village of Minions to get to Trethevy Quoit the night before we were fairly confident about finding the famous stone circles called “The Hurlers”. There was a big brown sign pointing to them and everything so how could we miss them? We missed them. The morning mist was so dense that visibility was down to twenty feet, and as we trudged along the damp granite path our attention was on avoiding the larger puddles. At one point I stopped, intuitively feeling something was nearby. As I looked up I could see a small marker stone making an unusually prominent shape in the white misty background. We decided to head in that direction across the moorland and soon other shapes were coming out of the mist confirming that we had made a wise choice. Luck was with us and we hadn’t gone too far past, and soon dark shapes were appearing in regular patterns like dull ghostly sentries. We remarked how ‘atmospheric’ it was, which translated meant, “Dammit – why couldn’t it be sunny – this is spooky!”

What the Hurlers can look like

The Coach and Four

Other people were knocking about too, somewhere. Occasionally we would hear the sound of feet on the path and calls to a dog, or a group of walkers crunching past. It seemed that everyone else was missing the stone circle too because we were not disturbed during our hour long visit by anyone else, despite hearing man other voices nearby. Talking of which, as Kal and I convened on our way back we discussed the sounds we had heard in the mist and realised that both of us had heard the same strange noise. It was the sound of a carriage being pulled by horses. Undoubtedly. I’ve heard that sound in so many films that I couldn’t mistake it. I heard the sound of at least two horses, more like four, and they were accompanied by the sound of wooden wheels crunching on the path. There was no engine noise accompanying it. Most odd. Maybe some people with horse and cart were going past at nine in the morning? Even odder, the sound didn’t fade into the distance as you would expect, but disappeared as it passed us. You heard it clearly for a moment, and then as it passed by it died off quickly, it didn’t fade away. Again, very odd. I shivered a little in the morning gloom, and put it down to the atmosphere, but then when I mentioned it to Kal he nodded – he’d heard the same, and he added his own impressions of the noise which confirmed mine. However, on to the circles….

The Hurlers – The Male Circle and the Cross

There are three circles marked on OS maps, but in the mist we only found two of them. The Secret Cornwall site tells us that we are even wrong about that:

“The remains of a smaller fourth circle have recently been found north-north-east of the obvious three circles and a further fifth circle has been suggested between it and the others” (source: Secret Cornwall)

The first circle we encountered was the larger of the two, then there was a small pathway which linked to a slightly smaller ring of stones a few feet further north. One of the first things we independently dowsed was that the larger circle had a female characteristic, whilst the smaller circle was male.

Kal spent his first hour in the female circle, or rather, around its periphery, whilst I tried to get to grips with the male circle. I had come to the circles with an idea: I wanted to know whether it was possible to connect to the Sirius star energy, and what would happen if I did. I found a power centreA place where a person of a particular alignmentAlignment relates to the concept that humans have their own energy fields that are oriented or formed in a specific way such that the person is either suited better to one energy source of another. Due to the historical associations and symbolisation of The Sun with masculinity and The Moon with femininity we designate these alignments as either being ‘male’ or ‘female’ alignments accordingly. I identified the location of Sirius, and then sat facing it. Almost immediately I got the impression that I should walk around the circle to stir up the energies. I dowsed for the start point, and then which direction – clockwise. No surprises there. I walked around twice, the second time the path began to weave as though the energies around the stones were becoming agitated. This was good – I had done a similar thing at Mitchell’s Fold stone circle once. At that Shropshire circle I had walked around five times, each time dowsing a more erratic path with higher peaks. This was similar, but only required two perambulations to get the energies flowing enough to work with.

The place is an energetic centre where a particularly beneficial combination and formation of energies is formed into a pattern that is harmonic with the person for whom it can be called a power centre. again, facing Sirius, I tried to connect to the energy it was emitting. The previous night at Trethevy Quoit dolmen I had determined that Sirius was the teaching force behind my spiritual progression. I therefore wanted to see if I could connect directly to it, and what those effects would be. Now, after the event, I think I may understand what the effects are: an intuition to act. I felt that I should not be sitting, I should be standing. So I got up and an image formed in my head of a blazing cross shape, the kind of cross they call the “rosy cross” that has bulbous ends.

Me and the rosy cross

I saw that a human standing in this shape would map directly onto that particular cross format: the head, hands and feet would be the bulbous ends. I knew this was significant, somehow, but there was nothing else ‘coming through’, as it were. I decided to move to the next circle. What is apparent from all this is that I am clearly an expert image artist. Please contact me if you would like tuition in the mystical arts of MS Paint and computer art.

Just at that moment Kal was finishing what he was doing in the female circle and we passed each other as we crossed (‘cross’ again) and we exchanged a short update. By now we were both soaked with mist and drizzle and looked bedraggled. Good job no-one else was around!

When Mary Met Michael

The two circles, I noticed, were linked by a differently coloured grass strip. One of the first things I had done on entering the site was to ask to be taken to the best place for me to work and to be taken by a ‘ritual path’ (a thing I learned about from StoneDowser’s site – sadly no longer available, which is a great shame). I followed a zig-zag path through both stone circles to reach a power centreA place where a person of a particular alignmentAlignment relates to the concept that humans have their own energy fields that are oriented or formed in a specific way such that the person is either suited better to one energy source of another. The place is an energetic centre where a particularly beneficial combination and formation of energies is formed into a pattern that is harmonic with the person for whom it can be called a power centre. in the male circle, which I have just described. Now I was back on this pathway between the circles and I wanted to know more about it. Rods out, I started asking questions and got the answer that it was a neutral energy ley lineThe term used by many British dowsers to describe an energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres. It has sometimes been found that the energy ley can be diverted from its strict straight path by changes in the landscape or strong attractors that pull it away from its original course.

Energy leys may have inter-twining streams of male and female energies weaving along them, as though the energy ley is an attractor, a pathway or a conduit for the male and female energies.. It is easily confused with ley and therefore its use is not recommended by dowsers., aligned to other sacred sites in the area.

Talking of alignments, when I got home I traced the path of the alignmentAlignment relates to the concept that humans have their own energy fields that are oriented or formed in a specific way such that the person is either suited better to one energy source of another. The meeting point between the two circles was the meeting point of the Michael & Mary Lines – the energy leys made famous by John Michell, Hamish Miller and Paul Broadhurst (cf. ‘The Sun and The Serpent‘ book). The connections to other sacred sites include St.Michael’s Mount to the west and Glastonbury Tor to the east, to name but two sites on this incredible line. The compass reading I took at the time added to that confirmation – ENE/WSW – the same as the Michael/Mary line.

Hurling in the Female Circle

I ventured into the female circle and instantly felt more at home. It was like taking off a heavy overcoat on a summer’s day – palpable relief and a certain lightness. This was more like it – this was a place I could really do some work. I found the power centreA place where a person of a particular alignmentAlignment relates to the concept that humans have their own energy fields that are oriented or formed in a specific way such that the person is either suited better to one energy source of another.

Mark of a power centre

I didn’t try moving the pebble – it seemed like it belonged there. Instead I began the process of settling into the circle. My head leaned back and my spine opened and I felt the tug of intuition again. This time I was directed to walk around the circle in an anti-clockwise direction. No rods were necessary this time – I knew that one circumnavigation would be sufficient. And it was.

I stood in the power centreA place where a person of a particular alignmentAlignment relates to the concept that humans have their own energy fields that are oriented or formed in a specific way such that the person is either suited better to one energy source of another. I had been careful to set up protection before I entered the circles so i was sure I would only be letting in energy that I could productively use and which would not attach itself to me, or deplete me. I appreciated this sense of freedom and I began to sway. Round and round I swayed. Then my staff got involved. Next thing I knew I was laughing and pushing some unseen energy force around the circle. then I was HURLING it around, faster and faster! It was truly exhilarating. The mist allowed me the freedom from the stultifying effects of other people’s stares, and I relished the true sense of being free to play with these energies. Now I knew where they got their name from. It was nothing to do with men being turned to stone for playing ball games – that was clearly an invention of the dominant religious sentiment of the day. I knew now why these circles were The Hurlers.

Where Man Meets Woman

I have been to many stone circles in recent years but none have had such an obvious pair of male and female stones. Carnac had whole sequences of stones that I could quickly identify as male and female, but some scrutiny was required. At The Hurlers, in the female circle, one pair next to each other in particular stood out as symbolising the male and female forms in stone:

Male and female – one and zero

The straight slender form of the male stone is an almost perfect “1″, whilst the adjoining stone has a clearly overemphasised circular form – the “0″ represented in stone. Quite beautiful and meaningful – at this site was the joining of the male and female forms of the energy lines that traced the long ley lineThe term used by many British dowsers to describe an energy leyA straight line of neutral energy linking two or more sacred sites or other energetic centres. It is easily confused with ley and therefore its use is not recommended by dowsers. across the country from coast to coast.

As I stood again in the shape of a cross, feeling good about ‘reclaiming’ this symbol (as Julian Cope would put it) I felt incredibly full of power and energy. I felt like at that moment I could have achieved something truly magical. I got my dowsing rods out and began to check some levels – what level was my energy at before I came into these circles. 50%. And after the male circle – 60%. What was it now I was in the female circle? 100%. I was up to the maximum, and I felt great.

I met up again with Kal and he told me his stories. Sounded like he had had a really instructive time too. Despite the wet and mist, in fact probably because of it, we had both had an enlightening experience. The Hurlers are a powerful set of circles, even if we can’t even count how may circles there are on this moor!
