Songs and signs at the Pontfadog Oaks
After a fun-packed but bone-chilling day on the borders of Shropshire and Powys I was reminded of the town of Chirk as we passed close to it on our return journey. Chirk itself is a lovely town worth a visit but I was more interested in the two ancient oaks that I knew were situated in the village of Pontfadog nearby. It had been several months since my last visit and I had forgotten the name of the village, so we had to stop off in Chirk whilst I found a map and reminded myself of the village name and the way to get there. Once found we were only in the car five minutes before parking to one side of the B-road and crossing the road to join the short track to the ancient oak known as The Oak at the Gate of the Dead.
A gentleman who I will refer to as “The Tree Hunter” told me last year that I should try to stick to one name for this tree. Here’s his advice:
“I have done a lot of work over the last five years to get this ancient tree and many others to be recognised for what they are. Fantastic, historical towers of biodiversity, which as you know have their own aura and personality. This name [The Oak at the Gate of the Dead] has stood us in good stead for playing the media game if you like. I would be very grateful if you could refer to it by this name as there is now some confusion occurring with people calling it the ‘Crogen oak’….I will try to correct all occurrences that I come across for clarity’s sake.”
It was nice to come here to see this ancient oak grove, even in Winter, and that was mostly because Kal hadn’t been here before – I love introducing him to some of the things I find on my own. They are spectacular trees, and they do seem to attract a lot of attention. Last time I was here in late Winter 2010 there were several people milling around the old oaks and marvelling at their grandeur.
The site was all pizazzed up (if that’s a real term) – it had new flash clean colourful informative informational information signs all over the place telling visitors all about how this was a cherished site because it was where the lovely Welsh people saw off the hated English oppressors who wanted to wipe them out. Well, that was the horrid and pointless agenda that Henry the Second to do just that, so that’s good enough reason to celebrate his object failure at this sacred site. There you kind of feel that this would be a good place to gather together your energy for such a fight – the oaks are very protective and giving.
I remembered my previous visit to the site early in 2010. I had heard of the impending death of one of the greatest of the oaks – the so-called Oak At The Gate of the Dead (or OATGOD for short) and I wanted to see whether there really was anything special about this tree. As it happened the dowsing rods revealed that there was. Not that I needed the rods to tell me that – I could feel it as I approached the tree – there was a terminal sadness in the midst of a radiant glory. A strange and poignant combination. I remember putting my staff into the centre of the oak’s split core and infusing it with the final remaining energies of the tree.
Today we dowsed for whether there was any remaining energy in the tree. None. It was truly dead in an energetic sense now – there was no “chi” energy and the tree’s dryad had departed. There may still be traces of biological life, but it’s like a human being on a life-support machine – the biological functions are still registering but the brain may be dead. It would be the slow lingering death that trees have as they rot away depositing their physical essence back into the earth thanks to the assistance of time and thousands of insects and fungi.
When I dowsed I found that the dryad from the OATGOD had moved into a neighbouring tree, one that was very much alive and giving off every sign of such – green ivy wrapped itself lovingly around its trunk as though to provide it warmth through the frosts of Winter, and birds dipped in and out of its upper branches as though attending to its every needs.
Playing with a robin
Almost as if underlining this fact a robin chirped loudly as Kal and I stood beneath the new host oak. We looked up to find it was only a few feet away from us, watching us and chirruping at us belligerently – it WOULD have our attention! It was trying to tell us something…we both stopped to listen intently. It was as if…we could…understand its tone. It wanted us to listen. So we did. For a few minutes it spoke to us, telling us about the new tree, “The new tree was the special tree now, the old tree was dead, the whole grove loved the new tree. The spirit lived on.
I got out my phone which has an application on it that plays birdsong. I found the call for a robin and began to play it to the real robin to see how it reacted. At first it seemed wary, but after a couple of goes it began to mimic the calls. Kal and I looked at each other in delighted amusement – in a primitive sort of way we were making some form of communication with this little bird, and we loved the way its call was now less angry sounding and more playful – it was playing with us, repeating the phrases that I made with my phone. We watched the robin flit from branch to branch near us as it observed what we were doing and homed in on the source of this communication in its own tongue. A warm connection between us all made it seem as though we could talk to the robin ourselves and be understood. We stopped teasing it with the phone and thanked it for playing with us. At that point it fluttered its wings and flew off to a nearby tree.
I felt like the spirit of Pan had welcomed us into this ancient oak grove once more. I think that had to be one of the most delightful encounters I have had in a long while. A good start to the year’s outings.

2010 – Summary of the Year
It seems sort of fitting that this post is the 400th post on this blog. We have come a long way since we started in late 2008. All of that seems so long ago now, because so much has happened since then. We have grown. So I present the 400th post – a summary of the year’s work for 2010.
Like Kal I intend to do this summary in a single post. Last year it spread across about seven posts. I have learned to be more disciplined in this last year, and I will keep it to one. So, having sifted through all the millions of posts this year here are the absolute best bits. I didn’t believe that 2009 could be bettered, but I was wrong – 2010 was a vintage year that will live long in my memory, and below you will find out some of the reasons why.
PERSONAL HIGHLIGHT
Meeting and integrating with the spirit of Merlin
Things had been progressing towards this all year. Firstly I had met Arthur’s shade at Tintagel, and he tasked me with keeping Merlin’s legacy alive by connecting up and re-energising sacred sites. Then shades that I interacted with began to call me “Son of Merlin”, which I took to mean “follower” rather than literal progeny, or “spiritual inheritor” perhaps. Finally, at Dinas Emrys, it all came together and I descended into the Underworld to meet with Merlin’s shade, and as we emerged onto earth we merged in a kind of Rosicrucian marriage of male and female energies.
Of course, all of this can and perhaps should be seen symbolically, rather than literally. It works from any point of view – psychologically as the culmination of some form of inner desire, or as a desire to perpetuate a myth symbolically because it serves some psychological purpose. I’m sure it could be read many ways. For me, it was the fulfilment of my magical self. It was the integration of the intention with the delivery. It was the satisfaction of the edict “Make magick manifest”.
Meeting Brian Conquer and Feeling The Goddess in Glastonbury
Man, I almost forgot this. I was thinking about something completely unrelated and suddenly the whole experience came back to me and I had to add this bit into the post on 14th January 2011.
I remember being at the Chalice Well Gardens this year and meeting Brian Conquer, “Just a silly little Hedge Druid” as he described himself to some American tourists in search of free wisdom. I was intrigued by him - his eyes told me he knew many things and together we scolded those who leave Nature in a mess and praised those who make their own tools with love and care. That made me think of Oonagh.
Later, as I walked around the grounds he caught up with me and gave me a precious gift – a rugged clear quartz crystal. “Take that and go stand between the yew trees.” he instructed with a twinkle in his eye. “Call for the goddess.” I did what he said and minutes later she responded by visiting me – getting right inside me - expanding my aura to an incredible size and strength. So much so that a lady who was standing behind me went nuts, “Oh my God!” she kept screaming, “That’s AMAZING!“. I knew. I was feeling it. A stunning unforgettable moment for which I will repay Mr Conquer one day. 2011 is my year of service, after all.
WHAT I LEARNED
Here is a list of the twenty most valuable lessons that I learned from this year’s tasks, quests, encounters and experiences….
1. Sacred sites have an energetic imprint that can be dowsed. This imprint or sigil can reveal information about significant dates associated with the site. For example, the date when the site is most energetic, or the date when the site was created. Some reveal a sigil specific to the resident Genius Loci.
2. Most sacred sites have some form of astrological alignment – either they are oriented towards the Sun, Moon (as calendars), or they may be designed upon a sacred number that is associated with a particular planet, or they are imbued with (or resonate to) the frequency of energetic emanations from particular stars. Often particular entrances can be found that align to celestial bodies, or significant stones are aligned to these heavenly objects are particular times of the year. These then act as guides to the types and timings of subtle energies within that sacred space.
3. There is a fourth kind of subtle energy beyond the male, female and neutral forms – Primal Energy. This is energy without gender association, and which has yet to be shaped or transformed by any agency such as the sun, moon or human. We recognised it first in crop circles, but then realised that we had been dealing with it energetically for some time without knowing what it was. I do nto have a clear distinction in my mind between primal and neutral energy forms and this is something I will endeavour to clear up in next year’s work.
4. It is possible to imbue objects with energy such that they can retain that energy and it can be drawn out from the object at a later date by those who are aware of it. The energy imbued is in a primal energy form – neither male nor female until shaped after extraction. One one occasion I absorbed the remaining spirit energy from an ancient dying oak tree before it was lost completely.
5. It is important to have a purpose when visiting sacred spaces. Having a purpose means that the rewards from the visit are less random, and the information can be chained together over a period of time leading to pools of new insights, rather than just patches of new knowledge.
6. Spirits are real. Whether these be further sub-divided into spirit, shade or ghost I have come to learn that they have a real existence beyond my imagination. This has seen a complete reversal in my belief system on these subjects. Previously I imagined them to be something created by humans, or were simply an expression of Nature in her many forms. Now I know that they are sentient and purposeful in their own right, and only an expression of Nature insomuch as we are all an expression of Nature.
7. I have developed trust and lost a fear of the dark. By walking barefoot at sacred sites for much of the year, even at night, I have learned to overcome my fear of being hurt, and to place my trust in those spirits who are concerned with my welfare.
8. The earth’s energy grid is in need of healing. I have been led to this conclusion by many different experiences over the year. At the start of the year I was told to go and re-awaken some sites. Later I would re-energise and link sites up. After that I would create my own neutral energy bridge between sites after pledging to take this role on, in the spirit of Merlin. I suspect that we have simply demolished, destroyed, desecrated and saturated too many of our “earth acupuncture” points on the earth grid upon which our islands lay. I feel it is my task to make what efforts I can to re-energise these points, especially after the death of Hamish Miller this year.
9. Arbor Low is a hub for neutral energy lines. This finding sparked a deep investigation into the nature of neutral energy. We later found that this sacred site was particularly beneficial for learning. I spent a time tracing where these neutral radial lines went to and found some amazing correlations which all need further investigation.
10. Stimulating, cleansing and closing the Chakras are a means to controlling the flow of subtle energy between the human energy form and other energy repositories. I spent a long time this year working through these processes at various sites and found the whole process very mystical and beneficial to my understanding of how the human energy system can be controlled.
11. The sacred geometrical numbers five, six, seven, eleven and twelve kept cropping up this year. Particularly, ’5+7=12′ and ’5+6=11′ were important equations. The 12 equation represented the current order of things: five being man, seven being spirituality and twelve being civilisation. The 11 equation seemed to represent an alternative or older way of thinking: five being man again, six being magick, and eleven being a bridge between worlds. It was like I was being shown that there was an alternate route to a higher consciousness through other numbers than those which society currently enshrined.
12. My spirit guide can be communicated with via symbols of crosses, particularly ancient Celtic crosses. It took a visit to Ireland to discover this, but I have since found it useful in this country too. I haven’t found out why this is so yet.
13. Wounds from the past can be healed by acts of redemption in the present. I found this out when I was encouraged to clean up a local pond. I took a day off work to do it. No-one saw it, no-one helped me, but when I had finished I had healed a deep distant scar from yesteryear.
14. The Arthurian metaphor works best for me. The symbols of the dragon (spiritual energy), Merlin (celestial energy), Arthur (earth energy) and all those associated medieval concepts – these are the images that I work best to interpret and bring through into my magickal learning. There is no value in my spending time learning any other symbol system or lore.
15. The star Sirius has emerged as an important energetic influenceon many things – it affects fertility, offers protection from harmful radiation, is a facilitator of the enlightenment process, radiates a blue light that resonates with our throat chakra, and it provides a strong motivational energy.
16. Weather systems are very complex and shouldn’t be toyed with. It almost didn’t need saying, yet I learned a valuable lesson when I tried it.
17. Crystals and incense are valuable tools for creating the right atmosphere, and for taking the burden when performing magickal rituals. I am now well stocked with both and appreciate their value after extensive use this year.
18. Giving promotes the right state to receive. This year I have done a lot of energy healing on humans and sacred sites. I have also done more charitable work than ever. All of this has been done unbidden and I in return I feel that I have been offered more gifts than I can possibly take on board. I hope to continue with this form of work.
19. Using the proper respect when dealing with sentient entities has led to easier access to their knowledge and beneficence.
20. Coloured energy lines can be used to reveal a picture of the energy status of a site. For example, black lines indicate an unhealthy influence on the site, whereas white, gold and purple lines are very positive and healthy. This is an area that deserves a more detailed examination next year.
THE HARDEST LESSON
In amongst all of the good things that happened there were some hard lessons. If I were to resolve all of those lessons down to the one important factors that is going to change the way I view life then it would be this…
Warning signs should be heeded.
The leprechaun energies of Ireland taught me that. Now I pay special attention. Signs generally are more worthy of our attention, especially if we are following the ‘flow of the universe’ through the ‘wheel of the year’ (see glossary). The more in attunement with Nature, the more we should pay attention to her signs.
The consequences of ignoring signs deliberately can be dire and dramatic.
NEW PATHS STARTED
When the Wheel of the Year turns around to a new year it is very difficult to see where the rotation of the wheel will take you on that journey, or what wonder you will pass on the way. This year here are some of the new paths that I have ventured down, or threads that I have picked up from previous years’ work.
Spirits (including Siddha). Specifically I have become attuned to and aware of a spirit guide. Beyond that I have extended my awareness to include a spirit helper for healing, and have acknowledged a spirit guardian. Up until this year I would say that I was one of the last people who would have acknowledged these forces, yet they have graciously made their presence known when requested to do so, and I have received nothing but help and kindness from them.
Shades. I had no dealings at all with death energies of energy forms until Kal relinquished his dealings with them part way through this year. Then, from that moment on, I seemed to get requests to learn about and deal with shades. Shades, as we denote them, are the remnant energy forms of spirits that once inhabited human bodies. Having moved on they can leave a form behind unless this energy is grounded properly (as it was in earthen mounds in ancient times through ritual and right attitudes to death).
Ash staff. I have found and restored an ash staff this year. It is now one of the most treasured objects that I take with me to sacred sites. My interactions with the staff have been crucial this year, and it has become a powerful druidical tool for me to wield out in Nature.
OLD PATHS DISCARDED
Of course, no path is ever completely discarded – it is only passed by on this journey. Later in the journey the path may re-appear. However, these are the aspects of my spiritual journey that I have chosen not to pursue further unless I need to.
Crop circles. After finding that they were created by extra-terrestrial forces and then filtered through Siddha, we gave up trying to understand their relevance to us on our spiritual quest. They remain an interesting quirk that I predict will end by 2013.
Tarot. Although I have found a talent for using the cards I have found little use for them despite believing that I would. I am not discarding them completely, and I encourage anyone to use them if they would be of value, but for me they have little use compared to the inter-relationship with spirit forces. I think the cards are just a means to access this same information anyway, and I now prefer a direct spiritual connection rather than a symbolic one. Again, I re-iterate, they have their uses, but I don’t see much use for them myself. Watch next year be totally dominated by tarot now!!
THE UNEXPECTED
There always seems to be something unexpected arising on my journey. This year I have been surprised by getting involved in the following things….
- Shades and spirits – thought they we a bit of nonsense, actually, but found I was very very wrong. Might all still be in my mind, but if that’s the case then my mind is very very wrong!
- Charity work – I wasn’t one for doing “good deeds” until this year. Then gradually I have been finding myself saying ‘yes’ to more and more events, and going off doing things just for the sake of it and without recognition or reward. Most unlike me! But I like the new me.
- Psychics – I met a psychic and listened to him rather than laughed at him. Well, I could hardly laugh at him now that I was talking to spirits myself! Anyway – turns out he made a great deal of sense, and has been very insightful. I am pleased that I was led along this path to meet him.
WHERE THIS LEADS ME
Looking back I think that all of this leads me to begin the next year by turning my attentions to the following areas:-
Colour dowsing – I need to know what the colours mean (for me) and what colours can be found in Nature and specifically at sacred sites.
Sacred geometry – I kind of left this one hanging, but I mean to dowse for the sacred structure of stone circles and see if this has an astrological correspondence.
Earth energy grid – I want to determine why certain sacred sites seem to be linked together energetically, and if those links are damaged I want to set about repairing them, to restore the sites to their full working capacity where possible.
Book – yes, folks, I have been ‘advised’ that I should write a book. Never one to question the muses I will be putting pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) almost as soon as this post goes live. I don’t even know what it’s about yet, but I’m hoping ‘unseen forces’ can help there. I hope to post status updates through next year.
SUMMARY
Of course next year I will continue to follow the seasons and the Wheel of the Year, but I suspect I will not be as keen to mark every full moon. Yet the full moon is definitely an indicator for me that the energies around that time can be put to good magickal use and I will continue to preference dates close to full moons as opposed to their strict calendrical dates.
This year has been the most remarkable year of my life so far. Thanks, as ever, to my faithful sidekick Kal for his courage, inspiration and motivation - he truly does make this all worth the effort. Thanks, too, to those who have helped me. That includes you. dear readers, who have have witnessed my remarkable year on these pages, and I hope that you too have been inspired to go out and make your life’s quest as meaningful and magickal as you can. I am looking forward to what next year will bring if only to see if it could possibly match the wonders of this year.
Happy New Year, folks.

Herne and the Druid’s Circle
“It was a dark and stormy night”…actually, it was. For a reason that remains a mystery to this day Kal and I had decided to go out that evening on a mission without a purpose. That purpose took us out on a sunny and calm evening heading deep across the North Wales coastline heading for The Druid’s Circle near Penmaenmawr.
Rather than walk up the full length of the path I was determined to make the fullest use of the car’s four-wheel drive system. Big mistake. If you visit Druid’s Circle from the Penmaenmawr side, I strongly urge you to park at the two sandstone columns and go no further unless you own a Jeep or a Land Rover – the ruts and holes will kill your suspension!
Somehow we gingerly forced the car to climb the steep rutted path until we reached a flat bit and I let out the breath I had been holding for five minutes. As we stepped out of the car, relieved, we stepped into a Force Eight gale! The wind was picking up quickly, and we hurried to get properly attired (well, I did anyway).
It was still light although dusk wasn’t far away. We stomped off along the now familiar right-hand path round to the top of the hill above Penmaenmawr. Twenty minutes of fighting with the wind and we were in sight of the stone circle as the light faded quickly. When we arrived we laughed – how were we supposed to dowse in this wind??!! Madness. Yet, when we tried, attempting to locate the best place to sit and meditate, the rods turned – against and into a gale!! Dowsing works, folks. It just does.
The dowsing rods led each of us to one of the stones in the south-western end of the circle and we hunkered down behind them. As I sat I noticed that the wind noise abated substantially. It felt like I was in the one place where I might be able to meditate in this howling gale!
Druid Diary excerpt for Druid’s Circle: DD-PMM-041010-1
I was right – this was an unusual evening in many ways, and it was about to become even more strange as I met with an entity that I had never encountered before.
Genius Loci – the story so far
Scattered throughout the last year or so of this blog is the term Genius Loci. As I did some research (on our own blog) I found that the term has escaped its original use and is getting bandied about a bit – by me no less, the guy who coined it in the first place. So before proceeding let me clarify the term.
Genius Loci then translates from the Latin, “Spirit of the Place”. I first came across the phrase in an episode of that short-lived (sadly) TV series, Crusade…

I procured the term to represent the energy (sentient it seems) that resides within sacred stone circles. Although as I mentioned the term is getting a wider usage herein, I want to bring it back to its original usage for this post.
Over the last year Gwas and I have occasionally explored the Genius Loci of stone circles and determined the following information.
- Not all circles have a Genius Loci although most of them do.
- They have been dowsed to be in a specific position in the circle when we have visited but do move around within it.
- In previous explorations we have found “Entrances” and “Exits” to stone circles, we have/had assumed that these were where people entered but we have also determined an entrance and exit that the Genius Loci uses. It is still to be determined whether these are one and the same.
- The entrance and exits that the Genius Loci uses are neutral energy arcs. Again we have found other arcs too – notably at Arbor Low – which we will be exploring in detail
- The entrance and exits are almost but not quite opposite to each other and don’t seem to have a astrological/astronomical relevance.
- Using dowsing you can track the route a Genius Loci took after it entered into a stone circle to the place where it is currently at rest.

- Genius Loci’s seem to be aligned to astrological phenomena. For example the one at Arbor Low is aligned to Taurus, whereas the one at Nine Stones Close is aligned to Pan and the one at Nine Ladies is aligned to Mercury.
Note: This isn’t a direct alignment it is more that they share the same hmmm properties/characteristics.
- The Genius Loci do not reside in the circles all the time and this is odd but as far as we have dowsed Genius Loci’s we have found that they left the circles about 1100 years ago and returned about 700 years ago.
Note: I have dowsed about 8 Genius Loci’s so far and have found this date to be consistent. Further more, they were “summoned” by a human in the Middle-East around the Iraq area. Why and How we don’t know. I know – wow – but here is the thing – consistently those dates and information is accurate.
- When the Genius Loci’s returned from this enforced sojourn their “alignment” had changed. We have determine that this was to do with changes in peoples beliefs. But not how or why.
So far so good, fascinating and curious information which came from the sacred sites in the UK. Now we go to a stone circle in Ireland.
We were visiting the Piper stones circle in Ireland this year, our first circle abroad.

Here is a link to how that encounter went, Freeing the Dragon. But to pull some relevant data from that encounter to this post.
The Irish Genius Loci is the only one we have encountered that was trapped. It had been summoned and had gone when they were “called” 1100 years ago. This result surprised me. I was expecting different answers for some reason.
This Genius Loci is the only one we have had a seriously long encounter with. Again see the above post link.
As you can see, there is a whole world of exploration that can be done with this topic alone. Just as there is with so many others on this fascinating field.
What Gwas and I are finding is that should a topic need further investigation, it will crop up on our radar again and again and again. For now we keep moving forward, quite literally on the Edge!

Derbyshire Full Moon – Part 2: Doll Tor
Eagle Tor, Derbyshire – 27th February, 2010
This is part two of our Derbyshire adventures. In part one we visited Nine Stones Close and had an encounter with a Pan Nature Spirit. In this part we visit a new site for us – Doll Tor – reputed to be in a lovely woodland setting, and so it turned out to be. It was bit of a bugger to get to though. I think we probably came in from the wrong direction, because we had to hack our way across rutted fields at peculiar angles to reach the narrow strip of woodland that the GPS unit was insisting housed this new stone circle. Rarely have I been quite so relieved that modern technology saved me (mainly from the perishing cold).
Doll Tor: Mist and Mysticism
Having gone through such an ordeal I thought there was unlikely to be anyone around. I was wrong. Two ladies were perched on adjacent stones in the circle as we arrived. We exchanged pleasantries, but I was keen not to disturb their peace, even though I knew that even being there had already done just that for them. I was apologetic for that but Kal was less so, indicating that we were probably enlivening the atmosphere. Er, yes, quite. I’m sure we were.
I set about dowsing the circle, essentially buying some time while the ladies inhabited the space. I would do my thing when they had done theirs. Kal went off hugging trees and generally making a holy show of himself. He was acting very strangely today. I mean, stranger than usual. I kept one eye on him while I dowsed around. There was some negative energy to one side of the small stone circle – down the slope, beyond an inlaid stone that had some engraved words on it:
The stone was marking the renovation of the site in 1993, apparently re-erecting a stone. The negative energy source was an engraved stone at the side of the circle. Well, whatever they had done something was amiss with the energies from the plaque downwards. There was a wide pool of negative energy hanging around. I decided that I should do something about this straight away, especially as people were there and using the site. I asked all the appropriate questions such as “May I?”, “Can I?”, “Do I have the ability..?”, “Is it the right time…?” all with positive response. I got my incense out and began placing the five sticks that I had dowsed for. I knew it was a temporary measure, but I still wanted to do it.
Then a funny thing happened. I know the light wasn’t great, but the space was quite intimate and there were very few paths. Yet, somehow, I counted out five sticks, planted five, then could only find four of them when I came to light them in turn. The ladies watched me in amusement. “Lost something?“, on asked with a wry smile. “I thought I’d laid out five sticks, but I can’t find one now…”, I complained. One of the ladies said, “Why don’t you try putting one there?” and she pointed to a space at the edge of the circle, in the negative zone, which had a ribbon tied to a branch hanging over the spot. I dowsed warily….but the rods turned strongly at that point! I was more than a little surprised, but placed another incense stick and began to light them all. I thanked the lady for her keen ‘observation’ and she waved it away as though she did things like that all the time. Don’t you meet some interesting people at stone circles?
The ladies took their leave at this point and we have the place to ourselves as the sun began to make a more rapid descent towards the horizon. It was still light, however, but the mist was cooling us quickly, although Kal was hopping all over the place keeping warm. I decided to engage him in the process and asked him to dowse for the name of the Genius Loci. His initial objections melted away as he realised that I wasn’t joking. There are nine letters in the name, I stated, helpfully.
With that information, and the knowledge that we were dealing with an aether spirit (using Jaq D Hawkins’ definitions) I began to ask about the reason I had come: when should I have the first carved sigil on my new ash staff done by? The answer that came back through my meditations was not what I had expected – it was quite poetic and a little cryptic, and yet because of the style of language used I was able to understand it in terms of pictures rather than words. I was shown pictures of daffodils and saw them dying, accompanied by the phrase, “…by the time the daffodils disappear.” Er…end of April kind of time? Beltane? Anything else about it? I saw the Sun and Moon in the sky together – strong and vibrant – and knew that this meant a specific time of the day, month and year – when the Moon is full and the Sun is high – noon on a Full Moon day!
What other instructions could I glean whilst this information was flowing so easily and vividly, I wondered. I felt that each of the elements should be involved in the carving process (somehow), perhaps with a call to them to participate in being bound into the shape being carved. But what should the shape be? I should be the sigil of this site, came the answer. The combined powers of this site, my energies, my staff and the elements will all go into the carving of the staff. OK, very strange! Here’s the shape I dowsed after experiencing this:-
After experiencing this I felt quite “spaced out” and had to spend the next few minutes jut coming back to full consciousness, despite the impending gloom, mist and cold which ought to have revived me quickly. Kal had disappeared down the hill and was busy exploring. I waited for him to return and dowsed for whether I had had any effect upon the negative energy area – it was mildly changing, and slowly, but would return to its negative state shortly after we had left. Ah well, this was obviously something that was going to take quite a bit more work when we had more time.
Some people had hung ribbons on the positive energy side of the site, possibly in similar attempts to “ward off” the negative energy. They had constructed stick figure mobiles too, which looked quite sinister in the gathering darkness. It was all very “Blair Witch Project“!
In the enclosing mist the site felt cut off from everywhere else. We could have been the last two people on earth. It was quite magickal, and we should definitely come back here in late Spring to finish what we had started. I have some carving to do before then!

Dancing with Pan
Saturday – not Sunday – doh!
For about a month my calendar had a red-spot on Sunday 28 Feb with a note to the effect that this was a full-moon day and thus Gwas and I would be venturing forth. Then out of the blue two days prior to our set date Gwas revealed complications for the Sunday and offered up Saturday as an alternative. Unfortunately Saturday was completely booked for me, however not wanting to miss the moons energies and a sacred site visit to boot I hastily re-organised my time table and with fortune playing a final “good” card we were on our way for 12:30 on Saturday.
The long road
As a curiosity we decided to follow the sat-nav instead of going our usual route and boy did that take us the “long” and boring way round. So it was that an hour into the journey and we were only half way there rather than being near our destination.
A energised feeling
Even though it had been raining almost all the way on our journey to Derbyshire by the time we got out of the car the rain had stopped and although Gwas kitted himself out with a raincoat (not boots as he twice reminded me) I decided (as usual) to trust in nature providing me with weather suitable for my attire and left my raincoat behind.
Almost as soon as we stepped off the road I began to feel a deep-seated energy, freshness and a wonderful sense of playfulness. As we got closer to Nine Stones Close this feeling erupted into physicality and I was running, prancing and skipping up the hill and through the fields. Think “Little House on the Prairie” and you won’t be far wrong.

Little house on the Prairie
Welcomed by the great Oak
As we approached the Oak and Nine Stones Close circle both Gwas and I felt a great sense of welcome. Whilst Gwas busied himself around the circle I went over to greet my “old” friend. I really have to say this again: Me and Tree seem to have created a fantastic bond. In moments I was up on the separating wall and in amongst the great oaks branches.

Oak and Circle
Dancing with the energies
The location was quite popular with visitors this day and so we were a bit hampered initially, especially when a group of kids descended upon us and stayed to take photos and “temperature” measurements. Whatever floats your boat, right?
Anyway I was busy in a “long” hello to the Tree so wasn’t too concerned with what was going on behind me. During this hello, my feelings went more and more energised and “youthful”. Until when the field had cleared I found my self so full of energy that I started to skip. The skipping turned into dancing and whilst Gwas amused himself in observation I was happily dancing and prancing under the Oak tree for a good fifteen minutes.
Of course we were here to dowse (technically I did have my dowsing rods in my hands whilst I was dancing, does that count?) so I took up some simple questions to be going on with.
Alignment with Saturn
Since I had performed some healing of the oak trees aura last year, like all good Dr’s should I checked on the health of my patient and was gratified to see (dowse) that le grande oak was in fine auric health. Indeed that oak was acknowledging my friendship with friendship. Wow!!
Meantime Gwas was exploring the energetic alignment of the site and called in my assistance. He had found that the site was aligned to Saturn and no other planet. Interesting…
Intuiting the Pan connection
I began to confirm his findings and got a yes for Saturn too. Then for some reason I found myself asking whether the site had a connection to Pan. Where did that come from? My only reference point was my dancing and prancing…but its a big leap. You see reader you have to know that we don’t talk about pantheons and such like often. In fact I could go so far as to say that until that day “Pan” had never come up in conversation. And yet as plain as day there he was. Gwas did some ancillary dowsing to confirm that this site had a connection with Pan and that his hmmm energetic presence had left the site some 1500 years ago. Due (we dowsed to find) to the lack of belief in him!
Pan
Saturday -> Saturn -> Pan
As is the case so very often, we go out and explore the energies only to return and find so much more meaning in what we did. Let us look at this day. To begin we were supposed to go on Friday but ended up going on Saturday. Then I couldn’t make an earlier time so it was going to be a set off time of around 2.30 – which would have left us scant time for investigation and “play”. But then as “luck” would have it my time became free and we ended up arriving at the site around 2 instead.
Step 1 : we find that the site has connection with Saturn. Now we didn’t ask whether this was a permanent reflection or not. We didn’t think of this at the time but when I returned home and did some research I immediately (and now it seems obvious) that Saturn is related to Saturday! Let me quote Wiki…
Saturday is the only day of the week in which the English name comes from Roman mythology. The English names of all of the other days of the week come from Germanic polytheism. In India, Saturday is ‘Shanivar’, based on Shani, the Vedic god manifested in the planet Saturn. In the Thai solar calendar of Thailand, the day is named from the Pali word for Saturn, and the color associated with Saturday is purple. The Celtic languages also name this day for Saturn: Irish ‘an Satharn’ or ‘dia Sathuirn’, Scottish Gaelic ‘Disathairne’, Welsh ‘dydd Sadwrn’, Breton ‘Sadorn’ or ‘disadorn’.

Wow eh! What a connection to have had. Then I wondered if Pan was connected with Saturn too. So of I went digging away. This investigation immediately led to the information that one of the moons of Saturn is called Pan. OK that wasn’t what I was looking for really so I dug deeper. Here is one reference I found which brought hope…
… Ficino alludes to with discretion, is that Pan has an even higher station – that of the “highest” God. Elsewhere in Ficino’s work he holds that Pan “corresponds to Saturn, the prime intellect and highest God” …

A further connection can be made thus: Saturn according to many beliefs and perhaps in origin too was the God associated with agriculture, feasts and harvesting (see here). Pan also is connected with fields, fertility and nature.
Perhaps this is stretching it a bit, but I don’t “feel” it is. Here is an interesting statement…
Pan is connected to the season of Spring. Source: Wikipedia
I find this interesting because we are approaching spring and also we got an indication (see Gwas’s post) to return to 9 Stones in Spring.
To get back to the dowsing and what happened at the site. I felt that my dancing had a real connection with Pan and also felt that that had an impact in re-awakening the site (see Gwas’s post on that). Both Gwas and I had a feeling that perhaps we had gone some way in returning this sprightly spirit to the world.

Dancing with the energies – lovely
Kal
Derbyshire Full Moon – Part 1: Nine Stones Close
Stanton Moor and Eagle Tor, Derbyshire, February 27th, 2010.
Our little adventure in the Derby shire hills began on the first day of the Full Moon. Both Kal and I had felt its influence the previous night – for me it meant a sleepless night and a tight head. I love the Moon but it makes me pay for being so sensitive to it! Apart from the Moon we were astrologically unaware of what was around in the sky. All we were aware of was that it was a Saturday, there was a full moon today, and we had an intention to awaken the energies of an ancient site.
Muck and Pandemonium
A brisk walk up the hill past Robin Hood’s Stride brought us into sight of the four remaining stones that still form Nine Stones Close. There never were nine stones, by the way. We got asked that by some passers-by. There were five, maybe as many as seven. I am sure that there is a stone missing on one side (opposite from the tree), but the tree side was very difficult to determine – the rods were “hazy” on that, which is a most unusual and disconcerting response. I think the word “Nine” is a corruption of an older word relating to “Noon”, or the high point of the sun. Given our findings at the site this day, it may well represent the low point of the sun too. But we’ll come to that soon enough.
When we arrived the first thing I noticed was that the field has been spread with manure – the stones were covered with it! Nice. And we had already struggled through patches of mud to get there too. Roll on Spring and Summer, I say! Terra firma is required, and some warmer longer days too, please!
The first thing I did, after waiting for truckloads of schoolchildren to traipse through, was to go through some of my dowsing checklist. I think of it as a kind of warm-up exercise now (almost literally this cold misty day), as well as feeding into the Sacred Sites section of this site (eventually). Here are my findings for this day:-
- The site is energised by the position of the Sun at particular times of the year, for example Summer Solstice.
- The site was energised by the peaks of the Moon too, so was nearing a maximum again on this day.
- The site has an energetic alignment with Saturn – which signifies transformation.
- There is no Genius Loci at this site – it is devoid of external spiritual activity
Looks like we had times our visit right going there at midday on a full moon, but what of Saturn? On my return I decided to see what significance Saturn had. I started by looking at the celestial events around that time. Notice, from the quote below, that Saturn is making itself prominent in the sky on March 1st,
Sunday, February 28
Full Moon (exact at 11:38 a.m. today EST).
Monday, March 1 This evening Saturn shines left of the great big rising Moon, which is just past full and just past perigee. By dawn Tuesday morning they’ve shifted way over to the west-southwest, and Saturn has turned to the Moon’s upper right.
The exact wording about the position of various bodies is not what struck me. What made me jump was that we had spent the weekend discovering that Nine Stones Close was being influenced by Saturn, and here was Saturn about to loom large in the environs of The Moon at its peak. Energetically, I felt this was significant, influential even.
So I look around and Kal is jigging about beneath his favourite oak tree. He invites me to record him on his phone doing this, so to humour him I do so. Right. Er…is that normal? I enquire as to his state of mind. “I feel the urge to dance. This site is invigorated by dancing energy.” he states. Of course it is, I think to myself, of course it is. And continue with some preparations for my real purpose at this site today – to awaken the site’s energies. This has been the theme of the Imbolc to Spring Equinox period – to awaken the energies of the sites through human intention.
My preparations involve placing my ash staff in its proper place to focus and collect the energy generated, and for me to place four sticks of incense at appropriate power centres on the inside of each of the four remaining stones. There are more power centres at this site (six – which leads me to think there were originally six stones) – but the other two centres are not required for this awakening. Then I place my hand over four of the cup-marks in the Key Stone (as I’m calling the cup-marked stone).
Kal looks over at me as I break off from this ritual declaring it complete and says to me simply, “Pan!” We make a connection between the dancing, the Trickster god so beloved of Kal and the return of Nature spirits to the newly awakened site. Interesting! I dowse to see what this means and come up with the idea that a Nature spirit, a Pan (not THE Pan – they are multitudinous) is preparing to return to the site. We wonder when this will occur but don’t dowse for a date – it doesn’t seem appropriate to do so.
Saturn, Pan and the Solstices
As if by magic, Saturn appeared! What I mean is, having dowsed for the energetic influence of Saturn I researched the associations. Pan is associated with Saturn because Pan is the name we have given to one of Saturn’s moons. OK, interesting coincidence, but what did it mean for Nine Stones Close? We had prepared the way for a Nature Spirit (Pan) to return to the site. There was once a genius lociat Nine Stones Close but it left over a thousand years ago because no-one believed in it any more. When I say “believed in it”, I think I mean, “maintained its presence energetically” – a process of feeding human energy into the site through intention in order to attract and retain the presence of a Nature Spirit. This is a more intense relationship that “worship” which can be done without any knowledge or interaction with The Other (the Nature Spirit) – more intense because it involves purposefully giving energy to maintain the correct ambiance.
Saturn, in mythology, is the god of agriculture and vegetation. Well, here we were in a field, recently manured, expecting the return of vegetation and in the midst of agriculture (surrounded by farmland). Nine Stones Close is particularly linked to agriculture, as it stands in a currently worked field. Not a stunning link, but a link. Saturn is also associated with the astrological sign Capricorn, and thus the Winter Solstice. My dowsing results showed that the position of the Sun was significant to the energies of the site, so I could see how the Winter Solstice position would be a significant time. Oddly, when I dowsed for an astrological symbol, I couldn’t find one. I don’t know why.
The final piece of interesting information was dowsing for a sigil. Despite the fact that I knew there wasn’t a genius locihere (yet) I asked whether I could dowse for the sigil that used to be here representing that spirit. The answer, fortunately, was YES, I could. So I asked for the best location to do that and was directed to an area right next to my power centre. The shape that emerged was this double spiral shape, also called the Cornu spiral:
I have seen this spiral before – it is the double-headed spiral that is engraved on the entrance stone at Newgrange in the Boyne Valley in Ireland, and many other megalithic sites too; some well beyond these isles. According to one researcher, this double spiral represents the pattern that is traced by the path of the Sun as it moves across the heavens in relation to our Earth. It is a kind of universal pattern that emerges out of the patterns of Nature herself. It is Pan’s symbol.
Having prepared the way for the return of a Nature Spirit we left for the next site in high spirits. We had only intended a fleeting visit to Nine Stones Close, but again it had delivered a mystical and profound experience. Next, to a new site for us – Doll Tor stone circle on the hill opposite Robin Hood’s Stride.
Gwas.
