Dowth: Place of Integration

Sunday 29th May – Dowth, Boyne Valley, County Meath.

Dowth (“The Place of Darkness”) is the lesser-visited site of the three famous megalithic structures in the Boyne Valley complex. It is less visited because there is no convenient bus taking tourists to the site, and instead intrepid visitors have to walk the mile or so from the bus terminus, or a mile and a half from the Knowth site, in order to reach it. Luckily for us this late May day was about as beautiful and sunny as May days get, and so we walked along the blooming hawthorn-lined lanes in utter delight. Some days it pays to be a (would-be) druid.

When we arrived at Dowth we had the place to ourselves with the exception of a solitary photographer who busied himself with setting up some arty shots. We read the information board (always amusing, sometimes useful) and then looked at each other. We felt there was something we should do before going in – but what was it? We decided to wait. We didn’t know what for – perhaps just to let our blood cool from the walk, or to become totally attuned to the ambiance of the site before we entered. We weren’t sure. But we waited for ten minutes, then entered.

Information created by archaeologists

The site exuded a sense of spirituality from the outset. As soon as I entered I got my dowsing rods out and asked them to lead me to the place that I was best attuned to, my power centre, taking me by a “ritual path”, as I called it. My intention, the thought I had in mind, was of the path around Glastonbury Tor – the labyrinthine path that I would soon take again at the Summer Solstice. Eventually, after much to-ing and fro-ing around the edges of the mound I was led into the centre to a spot where someone had had a fire, somewhere near the centre of the hollow that formed a giant hole in the middle of the mound. Kal calls this form of perambulation in trance a “walking meditation” and says that groups he works with do them quite frequently.I wouldn’t know anything about that – I did it because it felt right to do. At the burnt spot the energy spiralled indicating a power centre. It was here that I meditated on my throat chakra. I wanted to clear myself and energise at the same time, with special attention to my throat chakra.

Then, like at the entrance to this unusual site, I got the oddest feeling. I felt that I couldn’t progress until I had recited a poem that recounted all my efforts to this point – a kind of announcement as to why I was here. Was I not in a land of poets? Was this not the land where the Blarney Stone is kissed for its gift of eloquence? And so I began to recite some dodgy rhymes, somewhat self-consciously even though there was no-one else around except Kal and he was over the other side of the hill. I told the spirit of the hill all about the other places I had visited to work on various chakras, and what the result of each encounter had been. As soon as I completed my poem I felt a wave of relief (release) and I picked up my dowsing roads again to see where I should go to next in order to work on my throat chakra. I felt like I had opened a doorway into an opportunity, and now was the time to step across this Mercurial threshold.

Kal's vision quest on Dowth

I began to follow a single dowsing road as it led me around the curve of the hollow and back to a new power centre – a rocky scar in the hillside similar to one that I knew from my many visits to Gop Hill in North Wales. I went there and lay down to ‘doze’, to get myself into an attuned and trance-like state of mind, a receptive mind state, if you will. As I entered a light trance state and became comfortable with the hill I heard and fleetingly saw a familiar figure – it was The Lady. The same lady that I had encountered at Gop Hill (this was something I felt, rather than positively identified). In my half-sleep I was able to ask questions of the Lady of the Hill. My questions were answered by the reaction of the sunlight – if it went behind a cloud then the answer was negative in nature, and vice versa. The strength of the heat or cold indicated the strength of the answer.

Some of the information simply formed in my mind, or bubbled up from somewhere, and then I tested its validity using the clouds. This sounds stupidly un-scientific, I know, yet it was utterly consistent. I could ask test questions which had simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers and the clouds would react accordingly and immediately, uncannily so. Those test questions provided the assurance that this was some form of divination allowing me to interact with this powerful yet elusive Lady figure. This was not the first time I had encountered this kind of divination opportunity, and I recognised it for what it was, and wasn’t about to squander it.

Solara An-Ra stole my soul!

Kal had given me a few DVDs that someone who had attended this year’s Glastonbury Symposium had obtained. Sadly, this person had not purchased the one containing Philip Carr-Gomm‘s talk, Luckily, that particular speech can be heard in two of the recent Druidcast MP3s (nos.31 and 32). And jolly interesting they were too. Nor did this kind benefactor obtain the talk by Andy Thomas (crop circles/conspiracy/2012), Nick Nicholson (photos of crop circles) or Christopher Dunn (pyramid mysteries). No, the ones that Kal got hold of were one about global warming (yawn – like we haven’t heard enough about that!), and the rather bizarrely-named Solara An-Ra, whose chosen subject was…channelling a message to us all from the star people.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. It’s exactly what Kal was thinking when he jokingly offered the DVD to me, saying “You’ve gotta watch this!“, and which I immediately thought myself when he began to describe its contents. So, for several weeks I put off watching it. When, exactly, would I get a spare hour to go through that kind of stuff? Would I be prepared to spare ANY time for that? Well, as it turns out, I did. And what unfolded not only startled me, but rather unsettled me too, but probably not for the reasons that Madame Solara may have been anticipating.

She can sit like that for hours

I have to admit, I couldn’t watch it all. I just couldn’t. It was pretty…out there. I mean, the lady’s attractive - well, I think she is - and with a comely figure, but that’s not enough to keep my attention for more than a few minutes. She started out asking everyone to do a meditation- fair enough! Embarrassing for those there, but not completely off the wall. It WAS Glastonbury, after all. She starts the meditation off by grounding herself, then connecting with the earth’s core by a golden thread of light,… [hold on - that sounds familiar!]…then she extends the thread up to embrace the sun and the moon [hey! this is sounding mighty similar to...], and then she brings it back into the centre to spread out a globe of light…[Right! Hold it right there, lady! That's MY meditation you're doing!]. She then goes on to have a Golden Shower in front of everyone in the room, but an imaginary one, so perhaps you can make your own rude imagery up for that visualisation!

I have to say I was pretty miffed. I have read a couple of meditation techniques from druidry books, but have tended not to take any of them literally, rather my meditations have grown and changed to the point where I was comfortable with my own form and imagery. Here Solara An-She-Ra-Mistress-of-the-Universe was – using my exact meditation technique! I was a bit gob-smacked. But I left it running to see what came next…

Then she explains that she channels….OK, edging towards the outer reaches now….and that she is surrounded by her guides. Well, you know, I’m not closed-minded – she might be for all I know – I haven’t got “the sight”, so…benefit of the doubt there. Then she says they’re from The Pleiades (angelic sweet voices) and from The Sirius System (rather abrupt frank voices, she explains). I wonder which one we’re going to hear? It was those kooky Sirians. When she started I nearly fell off my chair – What the b’jeezus is THAT!!?? I won’t spoil the surprise, but when that voice comes out of her you have to bite your tongue to stop yourself from either choking or laughing! Anyway – that wasn’t what made me freak out (much), it was what she was talking about.

A few minutes in she started to say that we needed to all dis-engage from the media – stop watching TV and listening to radio – it was not doing us any good. Not a radical message in this day and age, certainly not for me to hear, because I’d been saying that for the last few years to anyone who’ll listen to my rants. So, again, I got that “That’s my idea, that is!” feeling. Although, of course, I’m not laying sole claim to the idea – I’m just saying I got that eerily familiar feeling again.

Addendum 9th December:

On Philip Carr-Gomm’s blog Paul Milne had posted “Jerry Mander”‘s four reasons to stop watching TV. For fun, I’ve included them here:

1) The mediation of experience: “As humans have moved into totally artificial environments, our direct contact with and knowledge of the planet has been snapped. Disconnected, like astronauts floating in space, we cannot know up from down or truth from fiction. Conditions are appropriate for the implantation of arbitrary realities. Television is one recent example of this, a serious one, since it greatly accelerates the problem.”

2) The Colonization of Experience: “It is no accident that television has been dominated by a handful of corporate powers. Neither is it accidental that television has been used to re-create human beings into a new form that matches the artificial, commercial environment. A conspiracy of technological and economic factors made this inevitable and continue to.”

3) Effects of Television on the Human Being: “Television technology produces neuro-physiological responses in the people who watch it. It may create illness, it certainly produces confusion and submission to external imagery. Taken together, the effects amount to conditioning for autocratic control.

4) The Inherent Biases of Television: “Along with the venality of its controllers, the technology of television predetermines the boundaries of its content. Some information can be conveyed completely, some partially, some not at all. The most effective telecommunications are the gross, simplified linear messages and programs which conveniently fit the purposes of the medium’s commercial controllers. Television’s highest potential is advertising. This cannot be changed. The bias is inherent in the technology.”

Solara grins and bears the pressures of celestial channeling

Panic a bit now – skip fast forward to somewhere else in the talk. What’s the Sirian saying now? “LOVE – is not – the high-est – vibration.” Yeaaaahhh….and….? “The high-test vi-bra-tion…is the comb-ination…of LOVE and GRAT-IT-UDE [nod, nod].” HEY – now you’re really taking the mickey! That’s exactly what I say when I receive information from…[now I'm going to sound nuts]…speaking with trees (hey – at least they’re here and tangible!). I thank them and send them a feeling of love in return for their help and guidance – and she’s stolen that TOO!!

Too much. I stopped the DVD and put it back into the paper sleeve that accompanied it. I can’t watch any more of that! She’s making everything I’ve worked on and kept close to me a mockery with her dalek-voice proselytising Derren Brown nod-nod delivery! I’m gutted. Maybe I should turn to the Syrians, sorry Sirians for guidance. Maybe they’ve got the textbook on druidry techniques and have been feeding me this stuff all the time, when I thought I’d made it up myself?

Thanks Solara An-Ra – you’ve ruined (or validated) my spiritual work! I can’t work that out, but you’ve certainly stolen my soul!
