Spiral Part 3: Nine Stones and a gift beyond measure
This post is preceded by Part One (A Call to the Nine Ladies) and Part Two (Doll Tor and the Hidden Gem).
A trip to Derbyshire isn’t complete without visiting the fabulous Nine Stones Close sacred site. I have to say that our first visit to this site wasn’t promising. We had felt that the energies were strong there but not aligned with us. We were young, we were foolish, we were unrecognising the beautiful but ill Oak tree in the adjacent (but close) field.
Fortunately we have learned. Nine Stones is now one of my favourite sites. There I have danced with Pan, healed a so grateful Oaks aura and been blessed with its protection. I owe the site a lot and as I approached it across the muddy fields I knew without communing that it was shouting a tally-ho across the fields. I know sounds like a lot of hubris, but in some cases, I am sorry guys, you just have to be there. Experiences are visceral.
This was the third sacred site that I visited and I felt I was on a wonderful role. With my meeting the Maori spirit singer at nine ladies, the energised Lapis at Doll Tor and now the welcoming nine stones close. Okay I was up to my ankles in mud, but hey, the sun had broken through the clouds and I was joyous.
Propping my bag on the stone wall between the tree and the stones I did some preliminary dowsing…
- Was the Oak healthy? Yes. Good, that Oak is my friend.
- Was there any work for me to do at the site? Yes.
- Did the site need any healing? No. Good, since Gwas the Earth healer was absent.
- Was the work on myself? Yes.
- Did I need to meditate? No. O Okay.
- Did I need to visualise? Yes. Ah…er…what’s the difference?
- Did I need anything? Yes.
I asked to be taken to what I needed and was led to my bag. I opened the bag, which alas has so much clutter in it, it would make a Feng Shui practitioner scream. Anyway I asked which section of the bag I needed to look and was after a few more questions pointed at a folder of notes.
Side note: Having progressed along the path of getting my book published by Hay House (see Kals 3 Goals) I am in the process or rather beginning the process of creating an audio/visual version of it (Active Enlightenment). To that end I have been failing miserably at trying to order the book in accordance with its new form. The notes for this was contained in tha bove mentioned folder.
I have a theory, please let me know what you think in the comments. My theory is that if something is playing on your mind then dowsing and communing and visiting of sacred sites will take this obsessing into account in its direction – sometimes. What do you think? Why are we directed/guided as we are? For instance, what the heck is the Knights Quest all about? Would love your thoughts on this.
And so I have been playing with this content for the last 3 weeks in attempt to bring order to chaos. Now, here I am with this pile of notes, in a muddy field, with four huge rocks in it. Question time…
- Are these notes what I am being directed at? Yes.
- Am I to read them to find what I am looking for? No
- Is it the notes as a whole? Yes.
- Should I do a visualisation on them? Yes
Okay, first thing is that there were a lot of questions – that in honesty I feel foolish in repeating, so I wont, secondly. I had no idea what “visualise on them” meant. The best I could manage was to sit on the stone wall under the oak facing the circle and look through my notes. And then it happened…
As I leafed through the notes, looking at all the permutations that the topics could go in, I saw what was needed. Not only did I see this but also the music from the Maori singer came to mind. She hadn’t been singing in a rhythm that went fast at all. She had been singing in a spiral. It was so clear that I saw the image float in 3D space in front of me. With the image came an unblocking, as if the mental gates had opened and the process could run freely. Honestly, I cried.
My purpose for the next few weeks is to create that vision,

Spiral Part 1: A call to the nine ladies
- Do you follow your dreams?
The other night I was sleeping like a babe in arms when I awoke suddenly and was fortunate enough to recall the dream I was having. It was set in the (semi) wilds of Derbyshire at a sacred that many of you will now be familiar with, the Nine Ladies.
Was this a call to visit that site? Or just a reordering of my subconscious thoughts? I was after all reading through some of our exploits on this blog. Since I have just finished reading Dowsing by Elizabeth Brown (who keeps a set of rods in her handbag), I decided to grab the rods (yes, in the middle of the night, with eyes half awake) and ask…
- Was that dream an indicator to go to the nine ladies sacred site? Yes
- Should I go now (3:40a.m.) No. (In honesty I wouldn’t have gone at that time, but it would have been nice to know I was missing some opportunity).
- Should I go during the coming day? Yes.
- Was this because Imbolc had come early for me? No.
- Was there something for me to learn there? Yes.
- Was today the only time I could learn this? Yes.
- On a scale of 1-10 how valuable would this knowledge be? 9! Wow!
- Just as a comparison, what scale was last years Knights Quest be, relatively speaking? 23!
As it happened the next day was free and so I toodled off towards them there hills…As I drove the one and a half hours I wondered if I would encounter any of the spritely beings that Gwas had encountered upon his last visit. I have not had the fortune of having such a spirit infested experience but am game to frolic some (as Pan would testify I hope).
Nine Ladies
I arrived at the site with my usual wet feet (no rain but plenty of dew) and asked for permission to enter. Now I know what you’re thinking. Which alien has kidnapped Kal and could we have the sacred-site disrespecting fellow back please! But as my research, some of it which has filtered onto this blog, is showing me Thresholds are important.
- A quick note. I am currently in the middle of writing an eBook on Thresholds coming this summer.
Thus you find me connecting with the Genius Loci and asking for permission. It was granted instantly and I was my usual self of wandering around the site…letting it know me and me know it (energy-wise). I also nodded to the cantankerous Oak (we have issues) off to one side and meandered over to the King Stone.
All the while I had my senses out for any energies (pixies or anything else) and nothing was sensed. To be frank I think Gwas is so way ahead of me in communing with nature spirits. Anyway I was through the circle in the direction of the king stone when I spotted a lady up by the stone. Being sociable I slowed my walk a bit but continued on. Getting closer I had a shock.
Interlude…a fair few years ago (5 maybe 6) I was with a friend in Borders bookshop in Ellsemere Port. As I walked through the store along the enclaves of books at the back of the shop. My body snapped to a stop, did a double take and reversed passed the enclave I had just passed. Standing in the enclave was the most amazing woman I have ever seen. I’m not saying she was gorgeous or anything. It was that energy literally flowed out of her. In todays parlance I might have said that she was a walking power center of white light. I just stopped in front of her and stared. She didn’t bat an eyelid at this and smiled at me. Eventually I stammered something like, “you are beautiful” and stepped away.
I got the same reaction from this lady at the stone. She was stroking or touching the stone as I approached but boy did she radiate energy. As you may know I have communed with Caileach in the ast but that experience wasn’t as visceral and earthy as this. At that moment, this lady could have been a Goddess. I walked over to her (well the stone), almost in reverence and…was speechless.
- “the energies are warm today aren’t they?” she said. It was frickin freezing, but I acquiesced, “Yes, they are.”
- “I like this place, do you come often?” she asked me, “Perhaps once a season, how about you?”
- “It’s my first time, I’m not from around here”
The conversation continued as we walked around the sacred stones. She was a Maori and was visiting a email-friend in the UK. Interestingly she wouldn’t give her name (I was a trust-worthy person she said as she refused to say her name). I told her that I had had a dream that night and had thus travelled to this sacred site.
- “dreams often show us the start of a journey not its conclusion”
Interesting wisdom, considering Imbolc was approaching. I mentioned this to her, but she said that she was “one with her homeland” and thus it was still the summer “in her eyes”.
I liked her turn of phrase I have to say and being highly mutable myself you may find such words escaping my lips. Though I don’t think I could replicate the panache (or is it aplomb) with which she spoke. Yes, I was quite captivated with her subtle energy.
She asked whether I was an energy worker and I replied that I was a modest worker (what happened to my ego? Wake up already). “perhaps we could do some work together?” she asked and I said, what did you have in mind, to which she replied “I sing to energy” . Okay…
I was sat some five feet away from the king stone (her preferred stone to work with) in the direction of the circle and she sat on it. I had dowsed the position once she had intimated that she was going to sit on the king stone. I also dowsed for facing position and got a direction facing the nine ladies.
So, I was sat facing the stones as this Maori lady began to hum a tune. I don’t know what I was expecting. I guess the closest I have come to hearing anything from that neck of the woods is aboriginal twanging type noise. However this lass was letting flow a rhythmic sound. A bit like an angel choir. But whereas with an Angel choir you might have a slow and gentle rhythm, this lasses was quite fast and increased over time. As she sang I felt and saw energy flowing around me and through me down to the circle and then up again along paths that Gwas and I had dowsed on other occasions. It was as if her singing was pushing and pulling the energy around the circuit. Although one might think that this was an unpleasant experience, quite the contrary it was a lovely flow, like catching a warm breeze on a cold day.
We did this for quite sometime and I felt like the flow of energies was washing me clean, energetically speaking. After she was done singing I asked her what and why she had sung like she did. She said she hadn’t. “the earth sung me” Which I took to mean that she sang in harmony with the earth.
I would have loved to have talked to this visitor more but alas for her tempus fugit and so I was left thinking that this experience itself had been a dream. A dream that has left me with a new song to sing.

The Circle and The Spiral
My wife had a friend. She has worked with this friend a long time ago and they used to have happy times, but then her friend began to succumb to the stresses and strains of working in the mental health profession, and rapidly began to suffer from the very symptoms she was trying to cure. Friendship became strained. Honestly, her friend has never really recovered properly. and now, perhaps cruelly, her name is often accompanied by the prefix “Mad…” Everyone who knows her expects a whirlwind visit near to a full moon. Oh yes, despite what sceptics say, experience has taught me that this so-called myth is very true – people affected by the moon are prone to lunacy when the moon is full.
One night I heard a knock at the door. My wife was away and it was 8pm. I opened the door and Mad Lady walked straight in, chattering about seeing our cats, and 101 other topics within a ten-second burst. Definitely “hyper”! She is a buddhist and spotting an ornamental buddha perched on our fish tank she began to bow to it in little fast bows, hands clasped in prayer, and muttering incomprehensible mantras to herself and her deity. I calmly asked whether she would like a cup of tea, if she was staying? To my surprise she said yes, so I began to prepare the necessaries. All sorts of thoughts were going through my head. Mostly, “What am I going to do now?“. To be honest I had always let me wife take the brunt of her behaviour and had taken every excuse possible to slip away.
Sounds harsh, bur this lady has a lot of issues and she is a vortex of negative energies. She is a “taker”, but when well is equally a “giver”, so you just have to know when to catch her right. Sadly, she visits people most often when she’s in need, and in “take mode”. Tonight was clearly such an occasion, and this time there as no escape. this time I would have to deal with her on my own. The test was obvious to me. She was going around in circles with grief, stuck in a time loop, weighed down by the grief and guilt that accompanied the suicide of a former lover. She is spiritually and intellectually active but I know that very few of the people that she encounters are prepared to deal with her frantic and overpowering curiosity combined with such a strong neediness. People often are willing to help, but she is like a vortex of neediness that people get quickly depleted.
This time, however, the test was mine and mine alone. I prepared myself.
What is the fifth?
A while ago I was told that I was on a quest, or would experience five tasks. That to fulfill a four year spiral I needed to go through these, otherwise I would have to travel the same spiral again.
To walk the same spiral again is so against what I am that I just had to go forward with the tasks.
- The first of these tasks was to spend the night out in the forest of Alderley Edge. That tale is told in a night in the forest.
- The second task was to be silent for one week. This was a very difficult task to achieve however I had to use a subterfuge to make it work. In essence I practiced, what Castaneda called “Controlled Folly” and pretended that my voice had gone.
- The third task was to fast for one week, technically a fast from food was ordered, water was ok. This again was a very difficult task, one of the hardest parts was to stop drinking coffee. Again subterfuge of wanting to give up caffeine was used rather than explaining the long story of these tasks.
- The fourth task was to come to the conclusion that I have to let go of my family and let them live there lives as they will. This was another hard task to do, but oddly, as I had decided to let them go, they let me go too. So that worked out equivocally.
The fifth task remains un-resolved for the moment, however there is plenty of time to complete it and go forth on the next spiral.

The Soul Powers of Five, Seven and Eleven – Part 1
Introduction
When I ask the powers that be (the ones that reveal knowledge previously lost or hidden from me through the medium of my dowsing rods) I can often begin down a road whose destination is so far over the horizon, and along so many potential paths, that I initially believe I can never reach the end in my lifetime. Then The Other places helpful signposts along the way, and coupled with my intuition and reason I begin to unveil some of the mystery and begin to walk the paths with more confidence. One such path presented to me was the mystery of The Lunar Eleven. In the following series of posts I will be discussing my current theory that the numbers Five, Seven and Eleven share a mystical resonance, and that this resonance has particular usefulness for those of us who have identified ourselves as having a “lunar alignment”, i.e. those of us who feel related to or spiritually guided by the powers of The Moon.
However, to get to The Eleven I first had to go through two other numbers – The Five and The Seven. Whilst following my spiritual path I came across a directive that asked me to consider the meaning of The Five and The Seven. I took this to mean that the two numbers had some form of relationship and that one I found the nature of this relationship then I would know what to do : something would make itself known to me that involved five and seven. That was true, I did manage to find the relationship, but as with so many of these riddles one question led to another. No sooner had I discovered the meaning of The Five and The Seven than the next riddle was offered to me to solve – what was The Eleven to me?
The first thing you will notice is that I have turned those numbers into proper nouns. They were clearly identified to me as representing all possible forms of their real numerical values, yet the implication in the riddle was that the numbers would mean something in particular for me, and that I had to find out what that was. Here in this series of three posts I will try to explain what each of those numbers meant to me, and to hopefully inform you of some interesting tidbits of knowledge about those numbers along the way. Don’t worry – this is not a mathematical treatise! I began this journey into these numbers knowing only the most basic of mathematical knowledge, and I haven’t needed to move far from there to find my answers, and I don’t believe you will need to either.
In the first of the posts I will deal with The Five.
The Number Five
From the shape of leaves and petals, to the internal form of fruit, to the proportions of the human skeleton, Nature is defined by the form of five. There is a relationship between the form of five and the number twelve because twelve pentagons put together will form a dodecahedron – a twelve-sided shape which is supposed to be the inherent form of the earth’s geometry.
If a five-pointed star is drawn by lines then the form contains a pentagon at its core. If the points of that pentagon are joined then another five-pointed star shape is drawn. This regression can go on infinitely, and so five-sided shapes contain the concept of fractal geometry – the repetition of self-similarity within an infinitely regressing design. It is said that the Pentad – the five – underlies the form of the spiral via the Fibonacci sequence. The Fibonacci series is created by zero and one (nothing and everything) adding to itself successively. For example, 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, etc… The series is a self-accumulating sequence that grows from within itself and it takes nothing from outside the sequence in order to grow. Growth is the essence to the Pentad’s principle of regeneration – self-replicating growth – which begins from nothing and becomes all.
Interesting, but not where we’re heading right now. Let’s get back to how we use the number five. Mankind has developed systems involving the number five. Specifically I am thinking of the Chinese five elements, but five also relates to the druidic system of elements too: air, fire, water, earth and the fifth element of aether.
The Fifth Element
When we think of The Elements as discussed in traditions such as druidry we think of the four elements that we usually assign to the cardinal points, particularly as described in Wiccan ritual. My five is the druidic elements slightly altered: water, fire, air, earth and wood. The wood comes from my staff, which I take with me to sites and which stands with me in power centres – it has a central role. I have the co-operation of four other etheric spirits – one for air, water, earth and fire.
The fifth element that I associate with wood, wood being the physical representation of that element, is aether. Aether is essentially synonymous with spirit in the sense of “essence”. I differentiate essence from other manifestations of spirit, such as death energy, energetic shroud, apparition, earth light, UFO, poltergeist, or any host of other names for spirit. When I say spirit I mean the essence of an energy form that contains a sentience, and awareness, an intelligence. Jaq D Hawkins defines it as the medium through which sentience is permeated, a kind of spiritual dark matter. I mean it as a discretely identifiable sentience, often which can be identified by a name. Classically these may have been thought of as the pantheon of spirit energies from gods and goddesses reigning over a civilisation, down through to lowly nature spirits watching over the growth of a small cluster of plants.
As an interesting aside I had an encounter with the force of the aether spirit in such a small way the other day, but which made such a direct choice in my life. I was simply looking for the next book to read that would help me on my way down The Path. I closed my eyes in front of four long shelves of books and asked my spirit guide Theodora to guide me hand to the book that was most useful for me next. My fingers came into contact with a book and I lifted it out off the shelf without looking. I opened my eyes, “The Spirits of Aether” by Jaq D.Hawkins. The one in the series that I hadn’t fully finished reading. Clearly, now was the time!
“The Fifth Element” is also a futuristic sci-fi romp starring Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich, and happens to be one of my favourite films. It’s the only film I’ve watched more than three times, and I never get tired of it. Ideally, I suppose, I should watch it FIVE times.
The Geometry of Five
The geometry of five became important to me in a series of revelations that formed a connected pattern over the space of a few months in 2009. Firstly I was shown Venus in the night sky, and traced a sigil that I then associated with that planet. [see post]. Then I visited Moel-Ty-Uchaf and discovered that the circle was aligned to Venus, and that it drew its power from that planet’s influence. [see post]. Finally, I read about the orbit of Venus and how it forms a five-pointed star as it moves around in the night sky relative to the Earth. Finally, I dowsed that Moel-Ty-Uchaf stone circle is based upon the sacred geometry of the number five and the pentagon. Together, this information showed me the importance of Venus and the sacred geometry of the number five.
Five is the “number of life”, so-called because it is the form through which Nature expresses the life force. Much growth in Nature is performed through the five shape – the pentagon, the pentagram, and it is the number associated with making the life force transform into magical force – through the pentacle.
When it comes to my own work with Nature, five is number of external power shaping my consciousness, and assisting me in my weaving of the elemental forces into natural magickal form. The five powers that I employ – air, earth, water, fire and aether or spirit are the natural powers of Nature that I align myself with, and ally myself to, and the ones with which I have the most empathy, sympathy and resonance.
The Fifth Chakra
The fifth chakra is the Throat Chakra (not the Solar Plexus, as previously published in error). During my work with chakras I had to do a lot of work using my fifth chakra. Traditionally, this chakra is associated with communication:
“The Throat chakra would seem to rule the faculty of speech, being midway between the heart and the tongue. It is also associated with clairaudience (hearing spiritual voices), and with hearing sounds, words, and music, and with taste, smell. Another function associated with this chakra is taking in and assimilating of physical and emotional nourishment. On the gross level this manifests as sensuous desire and enjoyment for food. This chakra could be associated with the astrological sign of Taurus, which in current astrology is said to ruled by the planet Venus.
In Tibetan Buddhism, this chakra is associated with the dream state of consciousness. Both Tibetans and Taoists use this chakra to access the dream state and develop the faculty of lucid dreaming.” (source: Kheper.net)
C.W.Leadbeater talks about the five channels of the chakra energy entering the human body. These five energies then get channeled to the seven chakra points in the body (possibly more in some systems). For me, there seemed to be a transition from learning about five into learning about the relationship between five and seven.
That seems like a natural segway into investigating the number seven in the next post.

Mid-Summer Night’s Dream
Last night I had a dream….In the dream someone was calling me. It was a gentle voice that seemed to come on the breeze, it whispered that “It was time” and I should come. I “floated” out of my bed and flew in the direction of the voice. I thought at first it was coming from Alderley Edge as that was the direction I was heading in but I passed over that and continued on.

As I continued this, rather slow for a dream, journey I realised that it was coming from the Oak tree by the side of Nine Stones Close stone circle. Just as I arrived at the circle I woke up. So now I am off (at 7a.m.) in the morning to see or hear what there is to experience there…
Tools of the trade
So I wrote the above section before I set off and I just returned now at 4pm. And I have to say, I am transformed.
Before I left I dowsed to see what tools would be required and the rods went mad, I needed to take…
- Incense, Crystals, Tarot Cards
And two other things. I couldn’t think what so I asked the rods to show me and I diligently followed them out of the front door (what???) and right to my rose bush. Was I to take cuttings from it? No, Apparently I was to take some rose flowers from it. How many? Five.
The other thing that they led me to was hidden under a pile of junk (er home stuff) which I removed item by item checking each one and finally arrived at my singing bowl.
Wow! this seemed like it was going to be a fantastic ceremony!
I arrived at Nine Stones Close and the weather was gorgeous, the sun was out and the sky was “The Simpsons” blue. As I approached the Oak and the stones I felt a welcoming greeting from the Oak tree whose aura I had healed, wow was it only a year ago? Feels like a century ago!

Preparation
I asked the dowsing rods what preparation was needed and here is the results.
- I would be sitting under the Oak tree’s eaves facing the stones.
- Crystals ~ I used five crystals and placed them in a pentagram around me. Although I had a wide selection of them, it seems I was only going to be using Quartz today.
- Incense ~ Again five sticks each next to the crystals. Funny thing was that as I dowsed to place these I was taken around all four stones before placing it right next to a crystal – How odd is that?
Knowth – Part 1: Rock Art and Energy Symbols
Friday 28th May - Knowth, Country Meath, Ireland.
The series of large megalithic structures concentrated in the Boyne Valley was the target of our first full day in Ireland. We were stationed nearby at Duleek, so getting to the Newgrange complex was a breeze, and we were properly fuelled by a hearty breakfast including locally-reared produce and home-made soda bread and jams.
We followed signs for Newgrange, knowing that this was the popular site and that it probably would lead us to the rest too. Sure enough as we aprked in the jazzy new car park at the Visitor Centre and walked down to the main door, we knew we were in for the full tourist treatment. Even knowing that didn’t prepare us for the officialdom that was to follow:-
- visitors are directed to state which combination of the sites they want to visit: Newgrange only, Knowth only, or both. Clearly, most went for both or just Newgrange
- a sticker was placed upon you in a visible location indicating your bus time, and then you were directed to the cash point to pay 5 Euros per site (actually, 6 for Knowth becuase it’s a tad further)
- you paid and then were informed about how to reach your first bus, which was a 200 yard walk through the centre, out the doors, across the Boyne, along a winding path, and then up to the circular bus pick-up point.
To say these guys had this regulated was an understatement! Although initially appalled by this we were actually quite grateful that this system, which only permitted a group of around thirty people at a time in a site, actually allowed everyone to enjoy the site’s features without bumping into people all the time. It made sense, even if it was far from what we were used to. It reminded us of visiting Stonehenge.
Rock Art as Energy Symbols
One of my objectives for visiting these popular megalithic sites was to get a comparison of the famous rock art shapes with those that we had discovered through our dowsing adventures over the last few years. Did any of them match? Would we be able to make a sensible guess at the forms and shapes, the symbols and swirls that our neolithich ancestors had taken so much time and trouble to inscribe into rock?
As we waited for our bus I took pictures of the rock art displyed in photographs and pictographs in the free exhibition in the Visitor Centre. On arriving at Knowth half an hour later (after listening to a few minutes of the guide’s useful commentary then making our excuses) I went around with my camera taking snapshots of all of the rock art on the base supports of the large mound. I wanted to compare our energy findings with the shapes represented in the stone. Here are some examples of the interesting symbols. In a subsequent post more of these symbols are explained, but for now, here are the ones we could identify immediately:-
If one looks at the image above as a two-dimensional depiction of a three-dimensional energy field then things become a little easier to understand. The spiral is, of course, what we would call a “power centre” – a point on the earth where the energies of the earth emerge and merge with the radiant solar and lunar energies. The most ‘sacred’ of these types is the power centre that merges the three ‘alignments’ or types of energy – male, female and neutral.
The two arcs on either side of the spiral are the neutral entrance and exit arcs that we have begun to discover at numerous sacred places, usually stone circles. These arcs form ‘spaces’ in the energy field through which poeple and spirit energies can pass without ‘interfering with’ or being affected by the overall energy field, because to pass through the energy field around a site is to interact with it. These neutral entrances and exits seems to be a bypass to that trip-wire effect, possibly to allow for the ‘safe passage’ of spirit energy through the site, unhindered by the site’s design and potential.
It is entirely possible to read too much into the decorative swirls and shapes that adorn the rocks surrounding Knowth’s major mound, and yet one gets the sense that they are not purely decorative. After all – someone has gone to a lot of time and trouble to do this work, and even today we rarely decorate in stone just for the sake of it. Stonework usually has some kind of symbolic significance at least, even if only to express a wider design concept in keeping with our culture. So, it is with some hesitance that I point out the desing of seven concentric circles in the stone above, and mention that this might have a link to the seven chakras. Then, in the stone below, we see five circles. Five pathways for the incoming energies into the human body, according to C.W.Leadbeater in his book “The Chakras”. Again, perhaps the information is for me only to interpret in this way, but 7 and 5 are cropping up again at a site that is associated with human consciousness transformation processes.
